The League Championship Cup[1] will be a Australian rules football club knockout cup competition involving clubs from the various state league competitions from around Australia - plus the AFL's newest expansion side Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The purpose of the knockout competition is to support and promote the second-tier Australian rules football competitions and to provide another way of developing the lower-tier AFL players.

The competition will begin in 2011 and is set to run from March through to August. Matches will be played as curtain-raisers to AFL Saturday night games and are set to be screened on Foxtel in a late-afternoon slot between afternoon and night AFL matches[2].

Prizemoney in the competition will be about $250,000, with $40,000 going to the winner[3].

Mr Dillon said total prize-money for the 2012 FOXTEL Cup had increased by just under 20 per cent, with the winning team now able to collect a $60,000 prize for the four wins required to claim the title.[4]

It is understood clubs would be required to play in the League Championship Cup during their byes, effectively meaning they forfeit their weeks off. The AFL and Foxtel would cover the travel costs of clubs but offer little prizemoney or payments for players.

Opposition to the proposal came from the top SANFL clubs. The SANFL on December 9, 2010 signed on to be part of the League Championship Cup despite opposition from its top three clubs Central District, Norwood and Woodville-West Torrens. The three clubs had until December 14, 2010 to reconsider. The SANFL was willing to extend invitations to its next best teams from 2010 - Glenelg, then Sturt etc - if the top 3 clubs refused to participate[5].

After the top five SANFL clubs released a joint statement on December 15, 2010 declining the invitation to participate in the League Championship Cup, their places were taken up by fellow SANFL clubs West Adelaide, North Adelaide and Port Adelaide Magpies[6].

The AFL gave the competition the go ahead on December 17, 2010[7] with the finalised fixture[8] released to coincide with each of the State Leagues' fixtures.

Season 2012
