Apoel was founded in 1926. It is a right-wing fascist team that is very racist against all non-greek elements in Cyprus. In 1948 a group of excellent football players who had the courage to stand up to the Fascist club united and formed their own Football club(OMONOIA) which is still affiliated with the local Commnunist party. Recently Apoel has lost 1-0 to Omonoia in the championship and is sceduled to loose both the Cyprus Cup and Championship this year (2006).

Comunity

APOEL's achievements are not only limited in sports. It is important to note that APOEL athletes actively participated in national struggles when our nation was in need. The Hellenic history of our island is something that no APOEL fan is willing to overlook and we feel proud for our Greek heritage and for all those that fought to protect our common values and ideals. For example during the 1955-59 national up-rise against the British, many of APOEL's athletes and members of the club were active members of EOKA (the National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters), the most outstanding example being Michalakis Karaolis who was hanged by the British colonial authorities. It is no wonder that during this period APOEL even faced the danger of relegation as most of our football players were actively taking part in the national struggle. Also during the turkish invasion of our island in 1974, members of the APOEL family resisted the invading forces heroically until death, such as Y. Mavros and M. Zambas, while T. Markou is still one of the many Cypriots missing.
