@Tol: Just wondering why a "show all" and "collapse all" link is needed? The full content is accessible in both states with the only difference being the added max height restriction and vertical scrollbar, similar to the behavior of a browser window. As for printing, a media query is sufficient to print the full table. Jroberson108 (talk) 16:55, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jroberson108: I don't really know; it was that way before I implemented automatic updating. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 17:04, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'll assume it isn't needed if no one can give a good reason to keep it. Jroberson108 (talk) 17:15, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I like the "show all/collapse all" links. When expanded the table takes up more vertical height on the screen on the portal page. And it is easier to scroll up and down.
I don't have worry about the mouse accidentally going outside the small collapsed window, and then scrolling the page instead of the window. When the table is expanded I can put the mouse anywhere to scroll. Also I can use my eyes more to scan the table. Instead of also keeping an eye on mouse placement. Since it is only 2 data columns I don't really lose anything by losing the sticky headers when expanded.
Even on tables with more columns I am usually only interested in one or two columns. So I use the expanded table there too. I remember which column has what I want. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:59, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone else see a need for these links? Jroberson108 (talk) 15:26, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

With the table squeezed into one part of the portal page I can't see the "Show all/collapse all" link when I am reading the page at my normal 150% text zoom setting on Firefox.

So I suggest switching it to the left side and putting the VTE links on the right side.

Or shorten the caption to just "COVID-19".

I could scroll right to find the "Show all/collapse all" if I knew it existed. But then I have to scroll right to collapse it too. That is tedious, especially if I do it more than once while perusing other parts of the portal page. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:10, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter: What is the link? I'm not sure why the VTE and show/collapse links are in the caption area to begin with since it isn't apart of the table caption. Shouldn't they be above the table inside the div wrapper? Also, there is already some CSS to hide the VTE links and move the show/collapse links where the VTE links were when the screen is 500px wide. What is your screen width? Jroberson108 (talk)
This tool might work if you aren't able to get the numbers: howbigismybrowser.com. Jroberson108 (talk) 22:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jroberson108. Portal:COVID-19. I thought this template was used on only that one mainspace page. Am I correct? See:
Template:COVID-19 pandemic data#Usage
This WhatLinksHere search.
Putting the VTE links and the show/collapse links above the caption sounds like a good idea.
I am on Firefox in Win 10 Pro. On a 27 inch monitor at 2560x1440. Zooming seems different today. But when I get the zoom level high enough I can't see the show/collapse links. Since the table is squeezed into a narrow column on the portal page.
Another idea might be to allow the caption and show/collapse links to wrap. Most table captions do wrap. So I don't know why this one isn't wrapping.
I see nowrap in the wikitext at the top. Maybe it is the problem, and can be removed or adjusted. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:16, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: Seems like you gave the screen resolution. What is the viewport and zoom setting while zoomed in? You can use the link I gave earlier or use this one that should work on really small screens (viewport). To make more space for the caption, the link text could be shortened from "[show all]" and "[collapse]" (10 characters) to "[expand]" and "[scroll]" (8 characters). Personally, I think those and the VTE links shouldn't be in the table's caption but above it. Jroberson108 (talk) 17:34, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jroberson108. Just try out the portal page in different browsers and zoom settings. The browsers and their beginning font sizes are wildly different for me.

And change the display setting resolution too if you want. But the simplest way to see the problem is to increase the zoomed font size of your browser until you see the show/collapse link disappear. Look at the huge amount of wikitext on the caption line:

|+ <div class="covid-show-table" style="font-size:80%;font-weight:500;">[[#covid-19-pandemic-data|[show all]]]</div><div class="covid-collapse-table" style="font-size:80%;font-weight:500;float: right;">[[#void|[collapse]]]</div>{{Navbar-collapsible||Template:COVID-19 pandemic data}}

I agree that the VTE and show/collapse part of it should go above the caption. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:58, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter: I tried 150% and 200% at various viewport widths. Seems like the scrolling right part you are talking about is the browsers scrollbar and not the table's scrollbar. Scrolling in a desktop browser is expected, especially with the large left sidebar menu that Wikipedia displays on all pages. On there mobile version of the page (mobile portal), the left sidebar menu isn't displayed and no browser scrolling is needed. So the problem doesn't appear to be with the table/template, but with the fact that the entire Wikipedia site isn't responsive (including left nav), which is why they have a different URL for the mobile version. Moving the VTE and show all/collapse links above the table will still have them floating left and right as they are now, so you will have to use your browser's scroll. Moving them and/or shortening the text only serves to allow for a larger caption. Jroberson108 (talk) 18:33, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jroberson108. I made a mistake earlier. I mistakenly assumed the same problem would show up on Chrome, Edge, etc.. on a desktop PC.
But they go to one column once the zoom level is high enough. Firefox stays at 2 columns on my desktop PC.
So look only at Firefox on a desktop PC, and increase the zoom until you see the problem. "Show all" will disappear out of view of the table window. And a horizontal scrollbar will show up just below the table window.
It would be nice if instead "show all" went up and to the left as it does in Firefox on my iphone SE 2020 in portrait view. This is without zoom. I have not played around with that on my iphone.
I did not know it was possible to wrap something and have it go up instead of down. Can that be done on desktop Firefox?

@Timeshifter: My landscape display resolution is set to 1920 x 1080. I opened Portal:COVID-19 up in Firefox and maximized the window and I don't see any problems. With my viewport at 512px × 246px (380% zoom), the "view all" link floats to the right. At 480px × 232px (390% zoom), the "view all" link floats to the left. In both instances I can click on the link without any table scrolling. As I said earlier, the browser scroll is needed for the non-mobile version of Wikipedia because of the site's left navigation. I can't reproduce the problem without more information such as the viewport value where the problem occurs. If I resize my window so the viewport width is 500px, "view all" floats to the right, and below 500px it floats to the left, as is instructed by the styles. My Firefox font settings (url: "about:preferences") are "Times new Roman" with a size of 16. My default zoom is 100% with "Zoom text only" unchecked. Check to see if you customized any of those settings or some other settings. Jroberson108 (talk) 01:21, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Are you using a desktop PC, laptop, tablet, ipad, or phone? That viewport link says 2133px x 1057px no matter what my zoom setting is. My display setting resolution is 2560 x 1440 on my 27 inch monitor. Font size is set to 20 in Firefox settings.
I tried narrowing the browser window, and I now see the smaller viewport numbers. If I narrow the browser window enough I see "show all" pushed out of view. Even at just 100% font zoom. --Timeshifter (talk) 05:18, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter: Desktop PC. I don't like higher resolution settings since the text is too small to read. You can try changing your resolution if that is the reason for the zooming? Each tab has its own zoom setting, so you have to zoom on the viewport tab page separately. What was the viewport dimensions when the problem occured? And do you need to use the table scroll to see it or the page scroll? What about the other Firefox settings I mentioned: font family and "Zoom text only"? A screenshot might be helpful too. Also, do you have the same problem on the mobile version of the page: mobile portal? Jroberson108 (talk) 14:39, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jroberson108. I am not going to worry about this further. It's a minor problem, and not worth more effort on your part or mine. There are more important issues that need my time. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:19, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
