A Blooper (ゲッソー, Gessō) is a white squid with a blackened face that appeared as an underwater enemy in the original Super Mario Bros. for NES, often pursuing Mario through the water. A fireball is needed to defeat them underwater, because Mario cannot jump when swimming. In Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, they can be found in levels other than water levels and have the ability to "swim" through the air. Since their first appearance, they have proven their ability to float in the air, squirt ink, and even harness the power of electricity as well as move around on dry land such as in the game Super Mario Sunshine. Nintendo now refers to these creatures as "Bloopers"; however, Bloober is, in fact, the enemy's original name. They have also changed colour on one occasion - the enhanced remake of Super Mario Bros. in Super Mario All-Stars features pink Bloopers. While snubbed in Super Mario Brothers 2, Blooper (along with a small chain of babies) returned to menace Mario in Super Mario Brothers 3.

Bloopers also appear in Super Mario RPG as enemies. This game even has a bigger version of the Blooper named King Kalamari, who is the first boss of the Sunken Ship. Bloopers also appear in Paper Mario in the sewers. There are three forms, each progressivly harder. A large Blooper also appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Luigi has his own sidequest in this game, and one of his companions is a Blooper named Blooey. Of course you only meet up with Luigi and his crew at various times in this game and never actually see his quest, let alone play it. Bloopers have appeared in all the Mario Party games. In Mario Party 3 there is an area/gameboard called Deep Blooper Sea which features a gigantic Blooper very much like the character Gooper Blooper. Bloopers also appear in Mario Kart DS as items that, when used, cause the screen of all players ahead of the user to be obscured with Blooper ink. If a player in first place uses the item, it will affect that player. In Super Mario Sunshine Bloopers appear a number of times, chiefly in the Rico Harbor, and a giant Blooper named Gooper Blooper serves as a boss in Rico Harbor and Noki Bay.

Bloopers have had cameos in numerous games such as Mario Power Tennis, Donkey Kong 94, DDR: Mario Mix, Yoshi (video game) , and Yoshi's Safari. A Blooper even makes a cameo as a background character in Kirby Super Star. In Mario Golf (Nintendo 64) there is a green in the course Mario's Star, that is shaped like a Blooper along with it's chain of babies. As well there is a course in Mario Golf:Toadstool Tour called Blooper Bay which surprisingly feature no Bloopers, only Cheep Cheeps!. Blooper also is a player in the various tournaments in the game, although you only see his name on the various course scorecards. He is never actually seen in this game.

A Blooper will also be a playable character in Mario Party 8.
