Feedback from Dorothy Potter Snyder (5 January 2020)

Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Having difficulty knowing how to improve the article. The sample article for a "Start" quality article is much shorter and has fewer references than the article I wrote. I don't see any grammar mistakes in my article. Therefore, it would be helpful for me to know specifically what demerits this article has to earn it such a low grade; then I could work with greater clarity towards improving it.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Took four+ months.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • My only suggestion is that for those of us who are new at contributing to Wikipedia, it would serve us better for editors and fellow contributors to make sure they're not making comments or suggestions in "shorthand". Lack of clarity in critiques can be frustrating to newbies. Spell it out.

Dorothy Potter Snyder (talk) 00:30, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dorothy Potter Snyder:, I added a note at the top of Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Grading scheme, which hopefully should make some things clearer, at least as far as what 'Start' means or what to aim for 'higher' ratings and where to get feedback. Also don't see 'Start' as a 'demerit', these classes are a way to track what remains to be done before it meets the criteria for the 'next' level. Most of the articles I created were Stub/Start/C classes myself. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 19:32, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback from JNStove (7 February 2020)

Did you find the instructions clear?

Not really - I wasn't sure why my article only received 'Start' status (no specifics were mentioned)*

How quickly was your submission reviewed?

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?

I would like some specific suggestions for improving my article please.* — Preceding unsigned comment added by JNStove (talkcontribs) 10:11, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback from Gladiator-Citizen (13 April 2020)

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • I think I needed a bit more specific guidance when the entry was first rejected.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Very quickly - which was appreciated
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • Yes, as I say above, I needed more specifics like " read about how references must be right after the statements which need proof; and also read about what to do when references are repeated several times through the article." I would not have been so discouraged. Having said that I think I have made leap forward in learning what is important.

I can see some small improvements I can still make and I think the alterations other editors made after submission really improved it. So thanks MurielMary and all concerned. Gladiator-Citizen (talk) 04:52, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Within a week, I think.

  • New articles could be automatically checked for basic items, such as the number of words in the new submission, number of references, if the article title already exists as a subheading within another article, etc.

  • The process was amazingly smooth and we were assisted in it by several very helpful editors. This was our first Wikipedia submission (I worked together with my sister on it). We were quite worried about the potential conflict of interest issue since the page had to do with my fathers ski mountaineering and rock climbing career but again we received help on this issue and are very thankful that the article was accepted for inclusion in Wikipedia. We'll continue to edit the article as we hope to add a few photos but consider that the main work on it has now been completed.

Dmbrinton, in the future can you officially disclose your COI per the instructions at WP:DISCLOSECOI? This would be helpful when assessing articles written by you. Sam-2727 (talk) 04:49, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • The new article has "taken with it" the Talk page of my Sandbox, which contains all sorts of messages and comments that predate the article, and indeed have nothing to do with it. I might have missed it, but it might help if the instructions include a suggestion along the lines of "Editors should clear their sandbox Talk page prior to submission - here is how to do that..." Not surprisingly, I do not know how to remove it or otherwise re-set the new article's Talk page.

  • I followed all instructions and created article with same standards as other wiki pages. I was told it wont be approved because I have to add more info and details. I kept adding more info as I was told and now they say it will probably be deleted because its like an advertisement. Other wiki pages regarding non profit and voting are published, live , with no issues. This article started as the same format as other ones which does not make sense why I needed to add more information and details. Now that I did, they say it will be deleted. Feedback from WakingLili (25 June 2020)

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Not really. I created the page in my sandbox first, then used the "Submit for Review" button -- that form is the page I found confusing. First, I wasn't sure what to put for "Subject/heading," because it wasn't clear how it would be used. Is that the name of my article, an edit summary, a message that will accompany the submission, or something else? I ultimately used the title of my article... which meant that when the "Your article has been submitted for review" template was added to the bottom of the page draft, its section heading was also the title of the article, which didn't inspire confidence that I had done the right thing. Second, that heading and template were inserted into the page draft between the "References" heading and the actual list of references. Third, the fact that the form had a giant text edit box which contained a message not to edit it was also confusing. The fact that things worked out this time gives me a lot more confidence for my next submission, but it was my first article and I waited before completing the Submit for Review form because I didn't want to do things wrong. (I know, I know... I should just be bold, but I wanted to do it right.)
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Nearly instantaneously -- thank you to reviewer Timtrent!
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • On the "Submit for Review" form, put clearer instructions about what to do with the "Subject/heading" field. It would help to explain briefly where the field will be used.
  • Get rid of the giant text box that says "don't edit this text box," if possible.
  • If feasible, fix the transclusion of the "Your article is under review" template so that it appears either before the "References" heading or after the end of the references list.

Feedback from Atomortis (29 June 2020)

What was your submission?
  • the submission was about an Artist
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Absolutely clear. In the beginning, it was challenging to understand the quality of a source, as a website did not fall under a legitimate information source.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • In less than a month and sometimes less than 2 weeks.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • I think having those forums of discussion was also an additional supportive process in order to correct mistakes.

Nonetheless, the experience was wonderful and fruitful.

The first time my article didn't get accepted, and it would have been helpful to know which citations didn't meet the quality standard so I could correct more efficiently. However, after I posted a request for this information, another editor helped, and after I did a thorough edit, my article was accepted! It just might have been more expedient to receive that info upfront. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cisternet (talkcontribs) 14:55, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • There is so much data in Wikpedia on how to do things I do find it challenging. I have been trying to submit other pages for artists but I realize now I was trying to do too much. Specially as family life has been hectic .. but I found a 5 minute tutorial on Youtube that explained what I needed to do simply and in a friendly manner.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • My submission was reviewed surprisingly quickly as I imagine you are inundated with requests. I am grateful for that. Especially as I want to get more diverse artists represented in Wikipedia.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • It would be great to have a visual 1 - 2 - 3 kind of one sheet showing how to set up a Wikipedia article simply. It would link back to Wikipedia pages for more detail. I am going to try to make one for Wikipedia and for Wikimedia as I am writing a series called The Super Simple Guide.. the idea is to break things down into simple blocks that are visually easy to receive information in a stress-less manner

Thanks also to the Wiki editors who have been trying to help me along the ways

  • I almost exclusively edit using the Visual Editor on my wee old iPhone, with a practical window about 2”*2”; the AfC banners across the top of the article are oppressive, and a barrier to editing. With regular articles AfD and clean-up tags are auto-shrunk and I click to expand and read them.
I think you may have a sizable percentage of editors who give up rather than edit with those large billboard rejections atop their work. Gleeanon409 (talk) 23:59, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I must admit that I did receive positive feedback from a few people, and I thanked them. And the not so positive feedback provided opportunities for growth as well. But if it had not been for the Editor sdkb, appearing out of nowhere just a few hours ago, I don't know where I would be today. If it's possible, I would like to recommend sdkb for a top Barnstar Award for demonstrating courage, wisdom and fairness. It is clearly deserved.

  • Editing existing articles is easy. Creating a new article is pretty easy. Submitting the new article -- as noted above -- a bit baffling. The biggest obstacle for me remains the discussion process. I am never quite sure how or where that takes place and how matters are resolved, if, indeed, they are. Feedback from LovingOperaForever (23 March 2021)

What was your submission?

I had different reviews, which from the general wiki point of view can be considered good, but until I got an expert reviewer about my topic, I couldn't move on. Often, the reviewers don't leave any comments and try to get a specific word; it becomes challenging.

Did you find the instructions clear?

Yes, but for a beginner like me, it takes a while to fit the process.

How quickly was your submission reviewed?

The reviews were quick, but the follows up very slow.

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?

Yes, assign the review to the right team directly (insert a new field to select the article's area) who has the proper knowledge, circumstances that can lead to a delay generated from the reviewer should suggest giving the review to someone else. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LovingOperaForever (talkcontribs) 20:20, 23 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think Wikipedia's current practice of encouraging newcomers to submit drafts for review and to obtain feedback is sensible. Once writers have a bit more experience, they can then try and create new pages directly.

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Unfortunately not. I found everything to be rather confusing.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Not well at all. I've been accused of being paid to write the submission and being accused of having a conflict of interest. I think that's disgusting because your editors are slandering and defaming me and assassinating my character. We (my wife and I )are fans of the town of Marfa and the Marfa lights which we have visited for years. They are a huge phenomenon. There hasn't been a film made about Marfa since Giant with James Dean and it makes us proud. My wife is from Marfa, she grew up there. Once we learned about this film (which seems to have a ton of exposure already all over the internet with trailers and posters and photos that are now legally public domain) I looked it up on imdb and on Wikipedia. I saw that it didn't have a Wikipedia page. So I reached out to the film's social media pages to let them know we are fans of Marfa and that my wife is from there. I told them we are even fans of some of the actors in the film from other projects. It was a while until I heard back from them. I asked for permission as a fan to be able to set up a wiki page and again as a fan to mention them on social media. They said the producers were fine with that and that the film's release was delayed to do Covid, but that as long as we (my wife and I) were fans, they were fine with it.

You're making a mountain of out nothing, being far too dramatic. If your editors had spent this much time doing their own jobs then Destination Marfa would already have had its own Wikipedia page. I wouldn't have had to add anything.

I don't have any attachments to the film other than being a fan of the town of Marfa, I like the trailer they released and I like two or three of the actors. There is no conflict of interest because nothing subjective has been included in the article. It is all objective and all factual. I find your responses and behavior to be uncouth. You've played judge and jury with me and slandered and defamed me. Guilty till proven innocent, and I haven't done anything wrong. I apologize for whatever rules I wasn't aware of but am now aware of them.

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • Well you could thank folks for contributing an article and be a little more professional and polite before slandering them. It doesn't make sense to personally attack people, it's just not smart. The process should be a little easier to understand, and you should ask the person submitting the articles more questions before accusing and judging them, it doesn't behoove anyone or make anybody want to ever read or use Wikipedia again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PhillipRyanNY (talkcontribs) 16:10, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • Dear editors

First of all, thank you for your recognition and encouragement.

I'm still studying at University in Beijing. I learned a lot by writing Wikipedia.

My grandfather told me the story of Tong Zeng. They are a generation. I adore Mr. Tong Zeng very much. Recently I got his approval to write his article. Coincidentally, Mr. Tong Zeng told me that he recently had an email exchange with Mr. Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia. He congratulated Wikipedia on its 20th anniversary!

Mr. Tong Zeng also said that he would be very honored to be on Wikipedia! Because Wikipedia is the most popular public welfare website.

In addition, I have a request. My article can take a step further from "C". Can you give me more help in this aspect, such as some specific opinions according to my article.

Because I need to look at Wikipedia over the wall. I wonder if there are any volunteer editors of Wikipedia in Beijing.

I wish you all the best!

  • It was about 7 months of waiting.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • The randomness of the review process (the note that articles are reviewed in random order) is ridiculous. They should be reviewed in the order they are received so that there is at least a light at the end of the tunnel when you submit an article. When I submitted, I saw a note that said it could be up to 3 months. This kept getting longer and longer the longer I waited. I felt helpless and it was very frustrating. It does not make me want to go through the process of creating an article again.

  • Not for someone who has never been taught anything to do with computers and is having trouble understanding very basic jargon! Seeing where to click for the next stage to be achieved was frequently a real challenge! I did try to read and understand the help guides and am sure 99% of the time the fault was mine but would have loved to find something very basic. I expect it is there but there was just so much information.

Part of the problem was that I had two people sending me messages and one very kindly expanded on the article and my references which then threw me into confusion when I wanted to follow the advice and expand my own. Still I have achieved a stub but still not sure what really happens next and keep being asked how even that can be viewed by others!

  • Harold Morrison
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Yes, but I will admit this was my first attempt, so it was challenging. Being a man, I tend to try it first then read the instructions once I'm hopelessly lost. However, in this case, I scanned the instructions, got things started, read through them more carefully, fixed several things I'd overlooked, then really read them and realized that I was in for a bit more work than I originally thought. I still see where there are a number of tweaks needed to make him more clean and proper, but coming from a genealogical research background, it was interesting to attempt to enter things from a slightly different perspective. I found the experience difficult and a bit anxiety-ridden, as each "comment" that was posted or when I had a slight "correction" (added categories prior to approval), I kept thinking that I was going to make someone angry and ruin my chances for approval. Now that I've been through the process once, I'll definitely take my time, try not to make rookie mistakes, and take a deep breath when someone is being helpful and hopefully consider that being noticed and receiving comments and helpful hints is all part of the process.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • It was a bit over a month, I think. I didn't count the exact timeframe.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • I would love if there were coaches who could chat you through the process, but I suspect like many sites, the number of staff who are "online" is very few and probably centered around development and support of the site, and less available for this purpose. Plus such things increase costs, and that's always a challenge. I think the only thing that might be helpful (and may already be there, there was a lot of help information) might be a sample Wikipedia article - one that was done right and shows examples of all the bells and whistles - so that you could look at it in a finished form, look at it in edit mode and see the behind the scenes pieces, and such. And my only other thought was perhaps an official "You Tube" on creation would have been a good thing too. That too might already be out there, but you never know until you ask. Thanks for an interesting and tremendous learning experience.

What was your submission?
  • Manual of German Law
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • I am trying to be as generous as possible ... this requires me to sort out what I got wrong ...

A. I think Wiki wants less rather than more in an opening article on a new scholarly subject. So I provided too much information when I started .. but at least that demonstrated that I had researched the online and published sources to an excruciating degree of exactness. B. I think all non-Wiki cites are FNs REFs rather than having the non-Wiki URLs in the text. C. I think I was right to give up for two years since the editor who started reading the page was an expert in Japanese Manga (not sure what that was) and the webpage was on a well-known study of German law.

How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Two years (almost). And when it was deleted after Wiki editors refused to read my corrections, it was not reinstated at my request.

But this turned out to be a bonus, because the Wiki editor DGG did a spectacular job of clean, trimming and presenting the materials.

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • There is a long answer to this Q but I'm too new for you to (probably) care. I think what I have to do is to acquire sufficient Wiki culture (less is more, cites in your format)

and accept that every change will be resisted ... I apologize for the crass nature of what follows, but I am one of the world's leading experts in parliamentary procedure and practice. There are about 20 at my level in the world and I cover the subject in German, Italian and Catalonian as well. It would kind of nice if I could gently update some of the more important Wiki articles in this area ... and have an experienced editor (that means an editor who is experienced like DGG) tidy up the material so that I can gain Wiki-smarts faster. 'Manual of German Law' was an homage to one of my colleagues who died in January 2021 so this is not specialized knowledge that is imperishable. Thanks for listening. Still not sure how to compliment DGG but I'll keep working at it. Best wishes, Peter

Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • No, it was superb. It was rated as start quality, which is fair. I couldn't do much more on this subject.

What was your submission? Draft:Organic Maps
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Not really. It was spread across many pages and ambiguos. There was no easy submit button and everything had to be done with clunky templates.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • 1-2 weeks I think? But creation and submission were the problem.

Feedback from LRFtheLion (9 February 2022)

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Very clear, and the resources were very helpful. This was my first article I have ever contributed, but I found everything I needed to learn how to properly format it, such that I was able to get it approved on my first try without having to resubmit after revisions. The one thing I was not entirely clear on was how to actively participate in the relevant Category tag projects to get feedback from those working on those projects on my draft article. But I think that has more to do with me needing to study up on how talk pages work on Wikipedia.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Eight days, very speedy!
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • Maybe just some hand-holding instructions for how new editors and page authors can post a message on a category project to ask for feedback on a draft article. Thank you all, this was a very good experience, and I will think about whether there are other missing topics I am qualified to write articles on. What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Kind of. I had to read WP:COI several times to figure out if 1) I could actually create an article where I have a COI with the subject matter and 2) the right process (AfC) to do so.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Fairly quickly, around a month
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • The message on my talk page said, "Since you have made at least 10 edits over more than four days, you can now create articles yourself without posting a request. However, you may continue submitting work to Articles for creation if you prefer." However, I went through the AfC process in order to properly create an article as per WP:COI. A future improvement might be to modify this message if someone made the article through AfC because of the WP:COI process (rather than because they are too new of an account to create articles themselves).

  • It would be good to be able to see some kind of progress indicator - there are X articles waiting for review, Y articles submitted before yours, Z articles submitted since - though I don't know how easy that would be. It was just slightly disheartening to wait that length of time and not be sure if what I had written was good enough - so I waited to do other edits. I understand there are only a limited number of reviewers though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Respectstherights (talkcontribs) 12:22, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • Yes and I have found wikipedia easy to use. The only trouble I had was saving the first time, more due to my nerves from "publish changes" then anything wrong with the instructions which told me it would save them and the officer infobox template as more used to visual edit but once got hang of it, found myself quickly growing comfortable with it.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • I submitted it on 13:09 12th March UK time, it was published 1:19 on the 13th. I felt that was very quick.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • For draft articles, changing "publish changes" to save changes might be a helpful tweak? Generally has felt like wikipedia wanted to help make it easy to edit and create an article, I have appreciated the help and encouragement of other editors in my short stay here DongZhuo3kingdoms (talk) 10:26, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback from Pgallert (10 April 2022)

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • The instructions were clear but incorrect. This is an article where all contributors have a COI, with the original creator blocked for username policy violation and spam, so extra caution was definitely warranted. It was clear from the start that this article would meet significant opposition, which it did.
  • However, that it went as far as bending policy not to have it accepted, I found that surprising. With the exception of the last reviewer (User:Greenman), the AfC 'staff' involved invented policies ('Web site is down, so I cannot assess the ref, so I'm not going to accept it'), deliberately misjudged existing guidelines ('not notable' for a rector of a university), refused to communicate after they had beed notified of their mistake, and generally did not extend a iota of good faith.
  • I mean, I have created hundreds of articles here, and expanded thousands. For this particular one I have a COI, but that does not suddenly make me a bad editor.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • The review process was reasonably fast.
Do you have any suggestions to improve the process?
  • If the intention was to drive COI editors underground, that might have been successful. The original creator will certainly never again hit the 'edit' button. As for me, I'm more resilient, so no worries. But I don't like the approach that was taken here.

"Brox Sox" is deleting hours of good wikipedia work. Please do stop this mongering bafoon before he deletes half of Wikipedia concerning Norwegegian noble families. He's deleting things claiming "they're fictitious". Well, darling, all sagas that blend into the medieval times, to quite a large extent are mixed with fairytale. That is why they are the oldest families in Norway, being the very founders of the country and the text itself stated that it is not always easy to know what is true and what is not. It makes one sad and angry that someone would delete ones family history/genealogy, claiming it to be "fictitious" when one is very much breathing and alive, passing down the same true history opposed to Danish state propaganda that tried to exterminate the old pre-Danish Norwegian noble families for centuries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.164.156.239 (talk) 10:38, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I understand their hard work here. I must appreciate their valuable efforts to build the earth's largest Encylopedia. My best regards to them.

What was your submission?
Did you find the instructions clear?
  • I'd say about 65% clear, although eventually I made it through the process successfully, so it must have been clear enough. I struggled with knowing what would minimally be required for getting the draft approved. I assume it will evolve and hopefully improve over time, but wasn't sure about the minimum reqs to get this process going.
How quickly was your submission reviewed?
  • Initially, I received a message that it could take months for the draft to be reviewed. This was quite unmotivating, to be honest. In the end, it was reviewed the same day I submitted it, which was a very nice surprise and made me feel like my work was valued.

  • I really appreciate the voluntary efforts to review and create this article, however, I felt attacked by one of the editors I encountered in my difficult times trying to create and publish the article both in their comments and in trying so hard to get my efforts to create the article killed. I suggest that the friendly spaces rule be maintained as I was not paid or influenced to write the article. I was only trying to complete my 1Lib1Ref campaign assignment I started since 2020. I have the username of this editor and would make a formal report if I feel endangered by this user going forward.
