W?FThis Wikimedian opposes rebranding the WMF as Wikipedia.

This user opposes the Wikimedia Foundation's arbitrary, opaque, and dictatorial office-banning of administrators when the community and ArbCom are more than capable of handling the issue themselves.

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:30, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this edit: just wondering if you meant to remove the links to your talk page archives? isaacl (talk) 22:50, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isaacl, yes, didn't like the list. You can find them through Special:PrefixIndex anyway if you really need them. (but few people would)Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 00:44, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

SkinEnforcer

Thank you for producing SkinEnforcer. I need it to stay sane when browsing Wikipedia whilst logged out. Please can you add some instructions for using the script when logged out? Does it require a tool such as TamperMonkey, or is there an easier way? Certes (talk) 17:09, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Certes, you're welcome. For any onlookers who are wondering: User:Alexis Jazz/SkinEnforcer. TamperMonkey/Greasemonkey is a requirement as enwiki doesn't have a script with the functionality of AnonLoader enabled by default. I can't think of an easier way really. If you already have it running, feel free to add instructions to User:Alexis Jazz/SkinEnforcer yourself or copy/move that page to another namespace if that would help others feel more comfortable editing it.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:48, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And what about some general hints for "any onlookers" who haven't used either TamperMonkey or GreaseMonkey before? -- 188.26.86.68 (talk) 20:13, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The home page for Tampermonkey is a good place to start. (Greasemonkey is similar but I've not used it for years.) You'll need to either know JavaScript or be ready to copy and paste from a suitably licensed source written by someone you trust. I'm busy at the moment and haven't had time to get it working on Firefox yet, but I'll post a how-to when I do. Often, the difficult bit is getting the code to run at the right time. Certes (talk) 20:21, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Certes, indeed. The code I used for the timing in Greasemonkey is very ugly and still incorporates a forced delay. It'll largely boil down to
var myIntScript = setInterval(function () { clearInterval(myIntScript); mw.loader.load('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alexis_Jazz/SkinEnforcer.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); }, 3000);
(where 3000 is a 3 second delay before mw.loader.load is called, depending on your system you may need more or less) There must be a neater way, but after trying many things I stuck with the forced delay as it was seemingly the only thing that worked consistently.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 20:39, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Although designed for Japanese Wikipedia, this script works for me in Tampermonkey with @match modified to https://en.wikipedia.org/* Greasy Fork is open source (GPLv3 licensed). Certes (talk) 21:54, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The privacy policies for TamperMonkey and GreasyFork appear to indicate that they collect which websites you've visited. I'm going to have to assume they're spyware. 2601:645:0:41C0:D1A0:EB6A:A0C7:18BD (talk) 21:10, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I should have recommended disabling "Anonymous statistics" in the Tampermonkey settings. Other data gathering for both Tampermonkey and Greasy Fork seems to be the usual logs of visiting their websites rather than from using the add-on itself, and seems reasonably minimal compared with the web's (admittedly very poor) privacy norms. The script itself is just JavaScript which can (and should) easily be audited before copy-pasting. I'm happy with it, despite sharing your dislike for data gathering, but I'll understand if others might not be. Certes (talk) 22:50, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A Chrome add-on has appeared, though I'll be sticking with Tampermonkey and Firefox for privacy reasons. Certes (talk) 23:13, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AnonLoader

Have you shut down AnonLoader at beta commons? I tried to use it to reference it at meta:Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Reading/Dark mode but apparently it is not there? CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 19:08, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

CX Zoom, it's there alright, but Vector-2022 changed where the menu is. There's a "Tools" link next to history now in which you'll find the gadget link. IIRC the gadget link is tied to the special pages link, it should be relocated but I have too much on my mind. The gadget links (when the gadget menu is expanded) look a bit malformed now as this menu is rather different from how it was but should still be functional. Btw, it would be better to implement dark mode using prefers-color-scheme.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 19:48, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Modifications to MediaWiki:Vector-2022.js to set unlimited width as the default

Hi,

I've been looking into how to modify this js file to implement unlimited width as the default, following the WMF's declaration that they intend to ignore the consensus to do so. I believe it is possible, by interpreting "limited-width-toggle-on" (from class "mw-ui-icon mw-ui-icon-element mw-ui-button vector-limited-width-toggle") as "limited-width-toggle-off" and vice-versa, but I've been unable to work out how to do this.

I believe you're quite experienced at these sorts of problems; if you have time could you please look into it?

I believe that there is another alternative, which would be unlimited width for everyone, and that would likely be easier to implement, but I if we can avoid that solution I think it would be better to do so. BilledMammal (talk) 07:39, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I didn't notice your header. I'll try to find another user to ask; if you know one who might be able to do this could you let me know? BilledMammal (talk) 07:41, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
BilledMammal, you mean for anons or logged in users? It's unclear to me right now where the setting is stored for anons. A switcheroo on the relevant classes may be safer and easier.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 06:09, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For anons; for logged in users I'm less concerned, as the WMF is planning to provide a mandatory (and hopefully neutrally worded) choice. If I understand what you are suggesting correctly (update the css based on the opposite of what the button class says it is) that is what I am thinking of doing; my issue is that it's been a long time since I've used JS and have been unable to work out how to implement it in the mediawiki environment. BilledMammal (talk) 23:13, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
BilledMammal, don't need JS: https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Unl-width-test.css
Demo: https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Search_engine_cache?withCSS=MediaWiki:Unl-width-test.css
The demo shows a Flash of unstyled content but this flash doesn't happen when the CSS is entered in MediaWiki:Vector-2022.css. (tested) Obviously my CSS should be reviewed by other users before deploying it as I only tested it on my system and Wikipedia might have some different classes from Commons.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 08:34, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; remind me never to be a web developer, I would be terrible at it.
I've had to make a minor change to your code, to make it properly toggle the limited width of the preview box (annoyingly, the code for that was hidden in a different CSS file), but otherwise it looks good to me. I'll run it past VPT, and if no one there sees an issue request it be added to MediaWiki:Vector-2022.css. BilledMammal (talk) 20:10, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
BilledMammal, see new version with adjustment for special pages and categories. Demo on category.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 07:54, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like it might have fixed things; I'm not seeing any issue with it. I'll pass it on to VPT, thank you. BilledMammal (talk) 09:03, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

EditNoticeOnMobile

Can you please make this gadget usable in any language? I am interested in using it as the default gadget on bnwiki. :) —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 20:05, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Yahya: WP:ENOM#Installation on other projects allows creation of local scripts. First copy the contents of MediaWiki:Gadget-EditNoticesOnMobile.js to bnwiki. Then, copy MediaWiki:Gadget-EditNoticesOnMobile.js/i18n.json, change language code from nl to bn and translate the messages in Bengali. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 17:38, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yahya, see CX Zoom's comment. If you need more help, just ask.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 03:11, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have read the page. But I doubt if this will work in non-Latin language Wikipedia. —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 09:39, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yahya, why wouldn't it work?Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 20:43, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yahya, just install it but leave out the "default" option in gadgets-definition so you can test it first using ?withgadget=EditNoticesOnMobile.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 21:26, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not working. :( —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 23:37, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know a lot about how JS works, but maybe it could be something related to nomobile class at bn:টেমপ্লেট:সম্পাদনা বিজ্ঞপ্তি লোড? It was removed from the enwiki template on 8 May 2022. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 10:23, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Removed the nomobile class, still not working. —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 11:18, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's working now. But I have noticed a strange problem where enabling it from Special:Preferences causes the Twinkle Gadget to automatically turn off. Other users are having the same problem. —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 15:12, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yahya, strange. phab:T341421
Btw, please update the line for EditNoticesOnMobile in gadgets-definition to include dependencies=mediawiki.storage as EditNoticesOnMobile may not load reliably otherwise. I've updated the documentation, this was an oversight on my part.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 08:58, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Updated, thanks. —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 15:14, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yahya, dependencies=mediawiki.storage needs to be within the ResourceLoader section, like EditNoticesOnMobile[ResourceLoader|skins=minerva|supportsUrlLoad|dependencies=mediawiki.storage]|EditNoticesOnMobile.js. I should have been more specific about that.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 01:41, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
