The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is set to be the 22nd edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It will be organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the national broadcaster of the designated host country.[1][2]

Location

In the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, unlike in the Eurovision Song Contest, the previous year's winning country does not automatically receive the right to host the next edition. However, since 2011 (with the exceptions of 2012, 2015 and 2018) it has become customary for winners to take on hosting duties, and since 2019, the winning country has had the right of first refusal on hosting the following competition. In 2015, 2014 winner Italy was given this right but ultimately opted out of it.[3]

On 27 November 2023, upon their victory in the 2023 contest on home soil, French broadcaster France Télévisions announced that talks would be conducted with the EBU regarding the hosting of the 2024 contest, as multiple countries had expressed interest in doing so and it did not want a "French monopoly on Junior Eurovision", having already hosted the event twice in a three-year span.[4]

For a country to be eligible for potential participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, it needs to be an active member of the EBU.[5]

As of February 2024, the following countries have publicly confirmed their intention to participate in the 2024 contest:

Active EBU members

  •  Estonia – On 24 November 2023, Estonian broadcaster ERR said that it would be looking into the possibilities of making the singing competion Tähtede lava [et] its national final for Junior Eurovision.[11] ERR's head of entertainment Karmel Killandi, while interviewing Arhanna, Estonia's representative in the previous contest, said that she "opened the door" for artists to perform in front of this huge audience in future years, suggesting that Estonia would take part in 2024.[12]
  •  North Macedonia – In mid-September 2023, Macedonian broadcaster MRT published its budget plan for the 2023/2024 season, which included a sum of money allocated for participation in the 2024 contest.[13] However, in late October 2023, the programme planning chair of MRT, Smilka Janeska Sarkanjac, clarified that the plan was still awaiting the approval of the government.[14] On 5 December 2023, the country did not appear on the participants list of the 2024 adult contest, which they later explained was due to the upcoming anniversary celebrations of the broadcaster.[15] Participation in the junior contest therefore remains uncertain until an updated budget plan is released.

EBU member broadcasters in former participating countries Denmark,[16][17] Latvia,[18][19] Lithuania,[20] Norway,[21][22][23] and Sweden[24][25][26] confirmed their non-participation in the 2024 contest prior to the release of the official list by the EBU.

Associate EBU members

  •  Kazakhstan – On 26 November 2023, upon the 2023 final, Kazakh broadcaster Khabar Agency expressed its intention to return to the contest in 2024; however, this is dependent on a formal invitation by the EBU.[27] Kazakhstan last took part in 2022.

Non-EBU members

  •  Belarus – On 1 July 2021, Belarusian broadcaster BTRC was suspended by the EBU due to suppression of media freedom in the country and independence of the broadcaster.[28] On 27 August 2021, the Director General of BTRC, Ivan Eismont, revealed that the suspension is set to expire on 1 July 2024,[29] making the 2024 edition of the contest the earliest possible return for the country. Belarus last took part in 2020.

Broadcasts

All participating broadcasters may choose to have on-site or remote commentators providing insight and voting information to their local audience. The European Broadcasting Union will also provide international live streams of the contest through their official YouTube channel with no commentary.
