The Best Damn Thing is the third album by Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne. The album is said to be less mellow than previous Lavigne albums, and more upbeat. The album was released in America and Canada on April 17, 2007; Australia and in the UK on April 16. The whole album made its radio debut on Ottawa radio station HOT 89.9 at 6:00 pm on April 14, 2007.

The album, thus far, has yielded two commercial singles: the #1 hit "Girlfriend" and "When You're Gone".

Album information

Lavigne described the record as: "fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way...all the good stuff."[1] The album is produced by Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, Lady Sovereign and Daughtry), her husband Deryck Whibley (Sum 41), Rob Cavallo (Green Day, The Goo Goo Dolls, My Chemical Romance, Jewel), Butch Walker and herself.[2][3] Travis Barker (Box Car Racer, blink-182, +44) has also recorded drums for Lavigne's new album.

On May 5th, "Girlfriend" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the same week that The Best Damn Thing (the album) debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and "The Best Damn Thing" (the song) charted at #107 on Billboard Hot 100 (#7 on Bubbling Under Hot 100), and "When You're Gone" charted at #90 on Billboard Hot 100.

The standard version of the album has had all uses of profanity removed. This applies to four songs, "Girlfriend", "I Can Do Better", "Everything Back But You" and "I Don't Have to Try". In "I Can Do Better", all uses of the word "shit" are replaced with a "shhh" sound, while on "Everything Back But You" the words "bitch" and "slut" are replaced with "hey", similar to those in "Girlfriend". Also, the lyrics "Get ready, motherfucker" is replaced with double "Get ready" in "I Don't Have to Try". Only the CD/DVD version contains the unedited, explicit versions. This version of the album will bear the Parental Advisory label because of instances of profanity; for example, the term "motherfucking" is used in the track "Girlfriend" and "...bitch, slut, psycho babe..." is part of the chorus of "Everything Back But You", although the word "bitch" is unedited on the song "Runaway". It will be Lavigne's first album in the U.S. to bear the label; in some markets the label was used on her second album, Under My Skin (2004).[4]

Promotion

The whole album made its radio debut on Ottawa radio station HOT 89.9 at 6:00 pm on April 14, 2007. The first single "Girlfriend" was supposed to be released on January 29 but the date was changed due to "Keep Holding On"'s increasing popularity on the radio. Avril debuted her video for "Girlfriend" on February 26 and her single premiered on Ottawa radio station HOT 89.9 with evening personality Cash Conners on February 6, 2006. Evan, her former guitarist made a cameo in her video, confirmed in his MySpace blog.

Avril Lavigne has been doing a small tour to promote The Best Damn Thing. To go to one of the few shows it was required to be a member of her fan club. She kicked off this small tour in Calgary, Alberta, and played for a crowd of around 200. The Calgary show aired on television on April 2nd, 2007, on the CBC Network. On this show, you could see behind the scenes and Avril preforming songs of The Best Damn Thing.

Other promotion

  • The track "Alone" (featured on the deluxe version of the album) was made available for download on the iTunes Store in New Zealand and Australia on March 29.
  • On April 1, 2007, "Girlfriend" went to number two on the UK Singles Chart on downloads alone, rising twenty-one places from the last time it appeared in the UK Top 75. This is her highest chart position in the UK so far, even ahead of her first single, "Complicated" (number three).
  • On April 4, 2007, The album was leaked onto the internet in its entirety and was made available to download on many file sharing sites.
  • On April 14, an edited version was released. It cuts out the excessive use of profanity in almost all of her songs.

Singles

  • "Girlfriend" made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #5 in March 2007. This was Avril's highest debut ever on the chart, selling over 122,000 downloads[5] through iTunes. "Girlfriend" also debuted at #3 on Billboard's Top Digital Songs which is Avril's second appearance on that chart, "Keep Holding On" being the first. "Girlfriend" is also available in seven other languages, the only difference from the English version being the chorus translated into Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, German and French. "Girlfriend" was added to the UK iTunes Store and reached #10 in under 24 hours. The song ascended from #3 to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the week ending April 25th. This is Avril's first number-one single in the United States; her previous peak was with her debut single "Complicated", which peaked at #2 in 2002.
  • On March 8, 2007, Avril herself announced on Kiss FM at "When You're Gone" will be the second single released from The Best Damn Thing. The single recently debuted at #90 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #77 on the Billboard Pop 100.
  • Some songs that are not released as singles can debut on the Billboard charts. The most recent example was for the title track of Avril's album: "The Best Damn Thing" debuted at #107 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and at #91 on the Pop 100; "Runaway" debuted at #111 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 and #94 on the Pop 100; and "Innocence" also debuted at #116 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100. [13], [14]
  • Although "Keep Holding On" was not released as a single directly from this album (rather for the Eragon soundtrack), the song still appears on the album as track 12. "Keep Holding On" later went on to chart at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It peaked on the Taiwanese Albums Chart at #1, and it had already been certified Gold within three days when the album was available for pre-order. It went Platinum when it was released to stores.

In Australia, the album debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart at #2 (being held off the top spot by Australian rock band Silverchair's album Young Modern) and sold over 35,000 copies, being accredited Gold by ARIA. [citation needed]

In Japan, it debuted at #2 (the #1 spot was taken by KAT-TUN with sales of 224,000 copies, which was 63,000 less than Avril's second album Under My Skin).

The album also debuted atop the Billboard 200 with 286,358 copies sold, less than Under My Skin, which sold 381,000 in its first week. This is Avril's second #1 album, alongside Under My Skin. In Canada, the album debuted at #1 with 68,000 copies sold, slightly more than Under My Skin.

In Spain, The Best Damn Thing debuted at #9, a put back from Under My Skin, which debuted at #1.

RCA said The Best Damn Thing has sold more than 1.5 million[7] and debuted at #1 in 11 countries including the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, United States, Germany, and Italy.
