'''Marine the Raccoon''' (マリン ・ザ ・ラクーン ''Marin za Rakūn'') is a character slated to debut in ''[[Sonic Rush Adventure]]''. She appears to speak with an Australian accent; as is evident in the snippets of quotes containing Australian slang words such as 'strewth' and 'bonzer'(though supposed to be spelt 'bonza') and the use of the word 'mate' at the end of sentences on the U.S' [http://www.sega.com/gamesite/sonicrushadv/index.html Sonic Rush Adventure website]. She dreams of becoming a captain one day, so she can sail around the world, but wrecks her ship, the S.S. Marine, in a storm. Tails decides to help her repair her ship, and Sonic goes to find parts to repair Marine's vessel. Unfortunately, Marine and her new-found friends find themselves confronted by a dangerous menace: the pirate Captain Whisker.

The Sonic the Hedgehog universes and continuities have dozens of minor characters, many of whom are anthropomorphic animals. Minor characters are arranged here according to the continuity in which they appear.

Bark the Polarbear

Bark the Polarbear (バーク・ザ・ポーラーベアー, Bāku za Pōrābeā) is a yellow polar bear who appears in the games Sonic the Fighters and Fighters Megamix alongside Bean the Dynamite. He lacks speed, but his incredible strength makes up for it. He has the comical ability of flattening an opponent's head in Sonic the Fighters.

He and Bean first appeared prominently in issue #160 of the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comic-having made a cameo appearance in issue #50 fighting alongside another obscure Sega character named Astal, the protagonist of a game of the same name-where they attacked Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters on Sonic's birthday, but Bark found himself outnumbered and surrenders to Fiona Fox. Bark used to be part of a mercenary group which included Fiona and Bean and was led by Nic the Weasel. Later, he was one of several criminals to be captured in a sting operation that involved Rouge the Bat allegedly having the Master Emerald up for auction. While not informed beforehand of the deception, the Freedom Fighters-specifically Sonic, Sally Acorn, Antoine D'Coolette, and Bunnie Rabbot-were drawn to investigate. Despite working together with Bean and making use of Extreme Gear, Bark was defeated after a brief battle and taken to jail; his new cellmates included Bean, Nack the Weasel, Mammoth Mogul, and Ixis Naugus.

Bark was imprisoned even more thorougly when Dr. Eggman launched a devastating attack on Knothole that resulted in all but a handful of the village's inhabitants being captured, though was freed when the survivors-Sonic, Knuckles the Echidna, Tails, NICOLE and Amy Rose-mounted a rescue mission following the assault. Transported to the city of New Mobotropolis, he declared his new allegiance to Mammoth Mogul, only to be once again sent to prison by NICOLE.

Bean the Dynamite (ビーン・ザ・ダイナマイト, Bīn za Dainamaito) is a green duck in the game Sonic the Fighters, also formerly known in North America and Europe as Sonic Championship.

Bean likes to throw bombs at his enemies, and seems to have an endless supply of them (it is believed that he has the comical ability to instantly manifest any type of explosive). The character was modeled after Bin and Pin, two characters in the arcade game Dynamite Dux. He has also starred in Fighters Megamix, along with Bark the Polarbear, and made a cameo in Virtua Striker 2 where Bean is featured in an unlockable team. When Sonic Riders was being produced, many fans mistook Jet the Hawk for Bean due to their similar color schemes.

His first appearance a cameo in the series' 50th issue where he and Bark were shown fighting Overlanders, Bean's first prominent role in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic was when he and Bark were hired by Dr. Robotnik to attack and eliminate Sonic on his birthday. Having previously been offended by Scourge the Hedgehog during the Anti-Freedom Fighter's impersonation of his heroic counterpart, Bean was more than willing to take on the job, using his explosives to blast into the Freedom Fighter headquarters near Knothole City. Together, he and Bark proved a formidable challenge for the Freedom Fighters, up until the moment where Bean jumped out of the window after Fiona Fox's thrown keys, and the Duck with an apparent fetish for shiny objects was later knocked out by Shadow the Hedgehog.

Like Bark, Bean used to be part of a mercenary band led by Nic the Weasel. Together with Bark, Nack the Weasel, Mammoth Mogul, and Ixis Naugus, he was captured and imprisoned after falling into a trap disguised as an auction of the Master Emerald. He and Bark arrived in response to the fake advertisements riding on Extreme Gear, but were defeated by Sonic and Antoine D'Coolette and imprisoned. Bean was then further incarcerated when Eggman took him and all but a few of the inhabitants of Knothole prisoner, but he was quickly liberated when the survivors mounted a swift and effective rescue mission. Unfortunately, once in New Mobotropolis, he was again imprisoned with his fellow convicts after joining Mammoth Mogul's new group-though Bean actually seemed to find the experience fun.

Big the Cat

File:Big the Cat.jpg
Big the Cat as he appears in Sonic Heroes

Big the Cat (ビッグ ・ザ ・キャット, Biggu za Kyatto) is a large, purple cat with yellow eyes. He first debuted in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, later appears in Sonic Heroes, and makes various cameo appearances in other games. He is 18 years old, weighs 280 kg (616 pounds), and is 200 cm (6' 6") tall).[1] He has been voiced by Syun Yashiro and Takashi Nagasako in Japanese, and Jon St. John and Pete Zarustica in English.

Big is a fisherman, and brings his fishing rod with him wherever he goes. He lives in a hut at the Mystic Ruins with his best friend, Froggy. Big is simple minded and appears to be somewhat slow witted, but is also very humble, friendly and protective of his friends.

His first appearance was during Sonic Adventure. At the beginning of the game, Big is sleeping in his hut, where he awakes to find that his friend, Froggy, had grown a tail, and proceeds to swallow his lucky charm, the yellow Chaos Emerald. As soon as he swallows the Chaos Emerald, Froggy runs off, causing Big to chase after him. Big chases him through various locations, eventually captures him, but Dr. Eggman's robot, E-102 Gamma steals the frog. He pursues Gamma to the Egg Carrier where he finds Froggy, but ends up being captured by Eggman and Chaos. Sonic shows up and assists Big in rescuing Froggy, and beating Chaos. After Chaos is defeated, Big finds the Tornado 2 biplane and decides to fly home with it, crash landing the plane right next to his house. Later, when Perfect Chaos destroys the city of Station Square Big gives one of the seven Chaos Emeralds to Sonic in order to let him transform into Super Sonic.

In Sonic Heroes, Froggy is captured again along with Chocola, a Chao that Cream knows. This causes him to team up with Cream and Amy Rose. They travel for a while, eventually learning that it was Eggman who took Froggy and Chocola. After defeating Dr. Eggman and his Egg Emperor robot, they find Froggy and Chocola in a puddle of liquid. The Eggman they had just defeated, however, was indeed Metal Sonic, who had stolen Froggy and Chocola to copy Chaos's data within them. They then give two Chaos Emeralds to Sonic, and help out by fighting Metal Sonic while Sonic and his friends prepare to transform into their Super Forms.

Big is an unlockable character in Sonic Shuffle along with E-102 Gamma, Chao, and Super Sonic, but has no role in the storyline. Big also makes cameo appearances in all of the stages in the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure 2 except for kart racing stages and the Green Hill stage (although he only appears in certain CG sequences of the GameCube port, and the player must insert a little cheat) and in some of the Sonic and the Secret Rings stages. This is accomplished by braking and standing still in a certain spot for a few seconds, revealing a short cutscene with him. This, in turn, unlocks entries in his own "diary" in the Special Book that contains many bonus pictures of him in some of the stages. The empty spaces give instructions on where these spots can be found. Rather than portray any Arabian Nights character, he appears as himself. He also appears in Sonic Rivals, as three collectible cards, and is rumoured to appear in Sonic Rivals 2 as a few more collectible cards.

Besides appearances in the games, Big also appears in Sonic the Hedgehog comic books, by making cameos appearances or appearing as a main character. He also appeared in Sonic X in the first episode sitting and fishing with Froggy until Chaos Control occurs; although we are never seen it enveloping him, it is assumed the light reached him. Later in Sonic X, during the Sonic Adventure saga, Big is seen again as part of the story, taking the same role he did in the Sonic Adventure game, and then makes cameos in very few later episodes as sitting in a park with Froggy, and later in a match against Ella in the tournament, but this is removed from the 4kids English dub.

Emerl

File:Emerl.jpg
Emerl

Emerl (エメル, Emeru) is a character from Sonic Battle. He is an ancient weapon, known as the Gizoid, that was created over 4,000 years ago by the "Fourth Great Civilization," which he is responsible for the destruction of. Around fifty years ago, he was discovered by Professor Gerald Robotnik. Gerald attempted to nullify his destructive programming, but failed. In an attempt to curb it, he gave it the same qualities as his other creation, Shadow the Hedgehog, a "soul" based on that of Gerald's granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Emerl establishes a link to anyone with great power, with those whose power is greater than his current master being favored, and remains loyal to that master until the link is broken. His greatest ability, Skill Copy, allows him to learn and mimic the personality traits, knowledge, and fighting abilities of others; he amplifies this copying ability by absorbing Chaos Emeralds. However, the Gizoid is prone to being overloaded by the power of the Emeralds or from absorbing too much data, in which case he goes on a mindless rampage. Emerl is 110 cm (3'7") tall and weighs a mere 14 kg (30.8 lbs)[2].

Emerl was originally found and studied by Gerald Robotnik, but he eventually absorbed a large amount of weapons, and decimated a large section of the ARK. Years later, he was found by Dr. Eggman. While experimenting, Eggman gave Emerl a Chaos Emerald which it absorbed. As he couldn't retrieve the jewel, Eggman got angry at the robot and threw it away on a beach, and went to create his own robots, the E-121 "Phi", from the Gizoid's blueprints, empowering them by shards of Chaos Emeralds.

He was later found by Sonic, who Emerl viewed as powerful, so he formed a link with him. At first Emerl had no personality, and could not speak, but as he stayed with Sonic, he developed. He continued to travel with Sonic and his companions while learning from them, forming bonds with them, and fending off Eggmans various attempts to capture him. Before Emerl could settle down to a normal life, Eggman finished his Final Egg Blaster, placed on his newly rebuilt Death Egg, and threatened the Earth with it. He teleported there and defeated him, but due to the power of the blaster, his old Gizoid programming overcame him, causing him to go on a rampage. The only option left was to destroy him. Sonic did this, and as Emerl started to break down, he reverted to his old personality and thanked Sonic for all the good times they had together. Sonic desperately tried to save his friend, but Emerl disappeared in a flash of light, leaving only the shards of the Chaos Emeralds behind. It is said at the end of the game that Emerl is still alive in the emeralds.

Froggy

File:FroggySonicX.jpg
Froggy in Sonic X.

Froggy (カエル-クン, Kaeru-kun, "Kaeru-kun") is a large frog, and the pet and best friend of Big the Cat. During the course of Sonic Adventure and part of Sonic X, Froggy swallows both a part of Chaos (his tail, this causes Froggy to grow a tail as well) and a Chaos Emerald. Abducted by E-102 Gamma, Froggy was taken to the Egg Carrier as Doctor Eggman wanted the Emerald and Chaos' tail inside him. Big pursued him, and recovered his friend. However, the Chaos Emerald and the part of Chaos he had swallowed were absorbed into Chaos, allowing it to become Chaos 6, but was eventually rescued by Big with the aid of Sonic. Big and Froggy then took the Tornado 2 back to Mystic Ruins.

In Sonic Heroes, Froggy and Chocola, a Chao, were abducted. Big, Amy and Cream went to look for them under the impression that Sonic had taken them. During the adventure they instead figured out that Eggman had kidnapped Froggy and Chocola, and defeated him. However, it turned out that Metal Sonic had framed Eggman, and had kidnapped Froggy and the Chao in order to copy the residual data of Chaos. Froggy was not seen in the final scenes of the game, but it can be assumed that he and Big went back to Mystic Ruins.

Professor Gerald Robotnik

Professor Gerald Robotnik (ジラルド・ロボトニック, Jirarudo Robotonikku) is the grandfather of Maria Robotnik and Dr. Ivo Robotnik, better known as Doctor Eggman, as well as the creator of Shadow the Hedgehog, Space Colony ARK, the Biolizard, Artificial Chaos, and various others. According to Sonic X, Gerald was 170 cm tall and weighed 88 kg.[3] His English voice has been provided by Marc Biagi and Mike Pollock. After launching the ARK fifty-six years before the main series, the current president of the United Federation came forth and requested his expertise on a project involving prevention of death: an immortality formula. He was reluctant at first, but his granddaughter Maria Robotnik had been suffering from an illness known as Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which had no known cure. Knowing that otherwise she might die, Gerald reluctantly agreed to work on the project.

While he himself called it the Ultimate Life Form, his doubtful coworkers frequently referred to it as "Project Shadow", due to its high impossible goal, akin to catching one's shadow.[4] The name stuck, and eventually Gerald officially referred to the project as Project Shadow. After various attempts, some reaching results such as the dangerous Biolizard, he contacts the alien Black Doom and, with his DNA, he would finish the ultimate lifeform: A creature who wouldn't age even from time itself, Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow's purpose was to serve both of them, as part of an agreement: Gerald would have Shadow to further his research, while Black Doom would have Shadow to collect the Chaos Emeralds for his own secret and sinister purposes: to use Chaos Control to bring the Black Comet, the home of his alien species the Black Arms, down to Earth and conquer it. Once Gerald learns of Black Doom's intentions he creates his own plan; he creates the ARK's Eclipse Cannon to destroy the comet that Black Doom travels in.

As revealed in Sonic Battle, at some point during his time working on Project Shadow, he also came across an ancient robot known as the Gizoid, which was able to copy melee and weapon abilities and use them. When the government and its military organizations became uneasy about Project Shadow, believing that is could be a potential threat to Earth, Gerald gave them the Gizoid to buy some time in completing his work. However, this did not change their feelings about Project Shadow. Sometime after the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog, G.U.N. attacked the ARK. Maria was killed and Shadow was launched toward Earth.

When the professor found out that Maria was killed by the G.U.N. military, he lost his grip on sanity. During his remaining time, he created a program that would smash the ARK into the Earth, destroying it, and tampered with Shadow's memories so that he would carry out the plan. In order for the program to work, it needed to be powered by the seven Chaos Emeralds. His final act before his video recorded execution was to condemn the world to destruction for his pain.

It should be noted that before the game "Shadow the Hedgehog", Gerald was only seen in one picture, which showed him as somewhat skinny (although possibly somewhat obese). In the game "Shadow the Hedgehog", Gerald was seen animated and in a few CG pictures, which displayed him as much fatter, about as fat as his grandson Eggman.

G-mel

File:G-mel.gif
G-mel from Sonic Advance 3.

G-mel is a robot that appeared in the Game Boy Advance game Sonic Advance 3. According to the official Japanese website of Sonic Advance 3, Dr. Eggman created G-mel from the remaining "data" of Emerl in order to use him to fight Sonic. G-mel has the ability to "merge" with other machines, and as such co-pilots all of Eggman's boss vehicles. Unlike Emerl, G-mel often uses his jetpack, either to fly or to tackle enemies. He can also teleport, fire barrages of missiles, and create a red energy shield around himself. By his fighting tactics, he is like Mecha Sonic.

If the player collects all of the Chaos Emeralds in the game, G-mel becomes extra final boss of the game and uses the power of the Chaos Emeralds to transform into a powerful orb-shaped machine. The Chaos Emeralds cause G-mel to become destructive, like the last time he had encountered the seven Emeralds together back in Sonic Battle as Emerl, and G-mel betrays Eggman by throwing him at Sonic before escaping. Sonic takes the discarded Emeralds, turns into Super Sonic, and teams up with Eggman to defeat G-mel during the final boss stage. This round form of G-mel has four extendable arms with claw-like hands that can fire energy beams and missiles. His only weak point is his gem, which is protected and impossible to harm unless Super Sonic charges Eggman with energy and throws him at G-mel.

After G-mel is defeated, Cream and her mother, Vanilla, find his broken body on the beach, and take him to Tails. Tails then proceeds to repair G-mel and apparently remove his "evil" programming. In the final scene of the game G-mel is seen playing with Cream at hers and Vanilla's house. A small ending scene after the credits show Cream chasing G-mel, falls, and starts crying. G-mel comes back to Cream, and pats her on the head; Cream feels better and runs with G-mel.

Lumina Flowlight

Lumina Flowlight appears in Sonic Shuffle as the guardian of the Precioustone in Maginary World, along with the world's goddess, Illumina. She is a pink, fairy-like being that Cosmo bears some resemblance to. In the beginning of the game, she brings Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and (unknowingly) Eggman to Maginary World in order to get their help to repair the Precioustone, which was shattered by Void. Later, she and Void cancel each other out, following her revelation that Void is the nothingness in the imagination that allows people to dream. She and Void are actually the two halves of Illumina that make her a complete entity.

Maria Robotnik

Maria Robotnik (マリア‧ロボトニック, Maria Robotonikku) is character that appears in flashbacks during Sonic Adventure 2, and Shadow the Hedgehog, along with the anime series Sonic X, where she mirrored her role in Sonic Adventure 2. She is voiced by Yuri Shiratori in Japanese, and Shelly Fox and Bella Hudson in English. She is the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik, and is the cousin of Doctor Ivo Robotnik, better known by the alias Doctor Eggman. Before Shadow was created, she was friends with the G.U.N. Commander. Maria suffered from the illness known as "NIDS" (Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which was considered incurable at the time.

While Professor Gerald's government-sponsored research aboard the Space Colony ARK was initially intended to attain an immortal being, Gerald took on the task to try and save his granddaughter, and named the project 'Project Shadow'. After the final product, Shadow the Hedgehog was created, he and Maria became friends. While this was going on, someone had been leaking information that the Biolizard was a potential danger. So, GUN sent troops up there in what they called an "accident," which was really a raid. Maria and Shadow attempted to flee the invading soldiers, but when they couldn't, Maria encased Shadow in an escape pod to escape the ARK. However, Maria was shot by a soldier, and as Shadow watched in horror, unable to help her, she asked him to bring hope to humanity and give humans a chance to be happy, before triggering the capsule's escape. This experience scarred Shadow for life, but ultimately his determination to keep his promise to Maria led to him to become friends with Sonic.

Maria has made a few appearances in the Archie Sonic Comic, most recently in Sonic #171 where Shadow's origins were finally revealed. In the alternate version of Mobius: 25 Years Later the Mobians appear to view her as a deity of sorts as several of them are see praying to a statue of her with angel wings in Portal, while a statue of her also appears in the throne room of Castle Acorn. Sonic even stats the phrases "Maria have Mercy" and "Maria help me" at the loss of his family.

Maria Robotnik is playable in the video game Shadow the Hedgehog, if a second player controller is inserted into slot 2, the 2nd player can control her, but only in 2 levels.

Marine the Raccoon

Marine the Raccoon.

Marine the Raccoon (マリン ・ザ ・ラクーン Marin za Rakūn) is a character slated to debut in Sonic Rush Adventure. She appears to speak with an Australian accent; as is evident in the snippets of quotes containing Australian slang words such as 'strewth' and 'bonzer'(though supposed to be spelt 'bonza') and the use of the word 'mate' at the end of sentences on the U.S' Sonic Rush Adventure website.

Marine also appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic adaptation of Sonic Rush Adventure.

Omochao

Omochao (オモチャオ, Omochao) is a robotic Chao with a propeller on its head. Its name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word omocha, meaning "toy", and Chao. Shaped like a Chao, Omochao is small, has stubby limbs, and a large blue head. He has a blue body and head with orange eyes, although in Chao Races where he used as a guide his eyes are yellow. When Omochao is activated a red propeller comes out of his head, letting him achieve flight. Omochao has the ability to talk, and in Japan, or with Japanese language settings, he almost always adds "Chao" at the end of his sentences. Omochao was introduced in Sonic Adventure as part of the Chao Races, but is likely most known for his appearance in Sonic Adventure 2, where he served as an in-game manual to teach players how to play the game. Since then he has appeared in a multitude of Sonic games, such as a guide in the training level in Sonic Heroes, or as a type of gun (named Omochao-gun. It looks like Omochao's head that shoots out Omochao heads that can bounce off walls).

Pachacamac

File:Pachacamac-X.jpg
Pachacamac in Sonic X.

Pachacamac (or Chief Pachacamac, spelled Pochacamac in his Sonic the Comic appearances) is a reddish-brown Echidna who is Tikal's father. Unlike other Echidnas, his muzzle is furry, and his eyes are constantly closed. He only appeared in Sonic Adventure in various flashbacks to the past that the characters experience due to Tikal (in the form of a glowing ball). He is named after an Incan deity. In Sonic Adventure, Pachacamac's English voice actor was the late Steve Broadie. In his appearance in the Sonic X anime, he is voiced by Dan Green.

Pachacamac inherited his chief rank from his mother and he is a greedy warmonger. Although at first he loved his daughter, he lost all compassion when his wife died, as can be heard from various Echidnas in his city. Tikal did try to talk her father out of his warring ways but ultimately failed. Later, along with a group of echidna warriors, he tried to take the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald as he considered them a key to the Echidna tribes' survival. Tikal tried to defend the shrine and the Chao living there, but Pachacamac ignored her pleas and ordered the warriors to go on. Tikal was pushed aside and the Chao of the shrine were knocked out in the process. This angered their guardian Chaos who appeared and used the Chaos Emeralds to become Perfect Chaos. Pachacamac and his warriors were killed and the Echidna city was largely destroyed. This caused his daughter Tikal to rush to the Master Emerald to plead that it got Chaos under control.

Princess Elise

Princess Elise The Third is a character from Sonic the Hedgehog as the princess of Soleanna. She is voiced by Lacey Chabert in English[5] and Maaya Sakamoto in Japanese. When she was seven years old, she was with her father, the Duke of Soleanna, when he tried to extract energy from the sun god of Soleanna, Solaris. The experiment accidentally splits the deity in two entities, but the Duke manages to transfer one half, Iblis, into Elise. He then tells her that she must never cry, as that would release the destructive Iblis, also known as the "Flames of Disaster".

In the present time of the game, Elise celebrates the Festival of the Sun in Soleanna. Doctor Eggman then attacks the city and kidnaps Elise, out to get the power of the Flames of Disaster she keeps inside her. Sonic quickly chases after them. Elise is later killed when the Egg Carrier explodes due to unstable engines, but Sonic and Silver use Chaos Control to go back in time and save them.

In the "Last Story", Sonic is killed by Mephiles, the other half of Solaris. Elise breaks down and cries, releasing Iblis, who fuses into Solaris with Mephiles. After Sonic's friends find the seven Chaos Emeralds, Elise uses their powers to heal Sonic, and with the help of a kiss from Elise, Sonic became healed as Super Sonic (Elise heals him with the seven Chaos Emeralds), and then Super Sonic gives some of his power to Shadow and Silver, transforming them into Super Shadow, and Super Silver. After Solaris is destroyed by Super Sonic, Super Shadow, and Super Silver, Sonic and Elise go back in time to when Solaris was just a flame. Elise takes the flame and tells Sonic that if it blows out, the flame that will become Solaris in the future, it will result in her and Sonic never meeting. Though she doesn't want their friendship to end, Sonic convinces her to abandon their meeting. With tears in her eyes, Elise gently blows Solaris from existence, thus erasing the whole game's events and happenings. Afterwards, the timeline changes so she is never kidnapped, and never meets Sonic. All the events of the game never happened.

Ray the Flying Squirrel

File:Raythesquirrel.gif
Ray the Flying Squirrel

Ray is a flying squirrel that only appeared as a main character in SegaSonic the Hedgehog, although he has an expanded role in certain other Sonic continuities. This is particularly notable in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, in which he is a member of the Chaotix team (see here for information about his role in that series).

During SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Ray was captured by Dr. Robotnik along with Mighty the Armadillo and Sonic himself and imprisoned at his Eggman Island. During their escape, the three jointly foiled one of Robotnik's plots and destroyed the entire island. In the game, one of the earliest to feature a voice cast, Ray's voice was provided by H. Kanamaru.

Ray was recently shown in the Sonic Channel character poll.

Shahra the Genie of the Ring

Shahra the Ring Genie made her first appearance in Sonic and the Secret Rings. The story begins with Shahra poping out of a book of the Arabian Nights and into Sonic's world. She reveals that an evil entity known as Erazor Djinn is absorbing the power of the book and causing pages of it to disappear. If he is not stopped, his power will be unleashed onto the real world unless the "Legendary Blue Hedgehog" told of in the stories, can stop him. Shahra gives Sonic a ring that seals a contract between her and her new master. She has a habit of calling Sonic "Master", especially when he is about to ask for something. Later on when Sonic and Shahra arrive inside the book Erazor shows up, and threatens Shahra's life by shooting a fire arrow at her; however, Sonic jumps in front of her and gets shot instead. Shahra then blames herself for what happened to Sonic, but he comforts her and tells her not to worry. At the end of the game Erazor tries to sacrifice Sonic, the collector of the World Rings, in order to gain their full power and gain the abilities of the creator. However, Shahra blocks Erazor's blade and is struck down in Sonic's place. Sonic makes one final wish for Shahra to grant - asking her to "not die, and for things to go back to the way they were". Although she does not have the power to grant the wish, the mysterious relic she gave to Sonic returns to its original state. After a vicious battle, Sonic destroys Alf Layla wa-Layla and Erazor is returned to his original state as well as Sonic. Sonic, now controlling Erazor with his lamp, wishes to bring Shahra back to life. Shahra, though back to life, is still overcome with grief from her earlier betrayal of Sonic. Sonic understands this, and wishes for mountains of handkerchiefs so she can cry for as long as she needs to, touchingly alluding to the start of the story.

Her English voice actor is Bella Hudson while her Japanese voice is provided by Mai Nakahara. She is similar in appearance to Pullum Purna from Street Fighter EX. Sonic calls on Shahra's power to use Time Break and the Speed Break which are gained on the game at Level 10.

Small Animals

Sonic's universe is populated with 'normal', less distinctive animals as well as anthropomorphic ones. These small animals (or 'Sonic's friends') are often used by Dr Eggman as 'organic batteries' to power his robot armies. The trapped animal inside can be freed usually by hitting the robot and destroying it's metal case. The small animals originally served as the majoric population of Sonic's earth (or Mobius in early western canon) before Sonic Adventure introduced human populations and cities. The original seven animals from Sonic 1 were given profiles and names in the Japanese manual. While they were unnamed in Western manuals, consistent 'Americanized' names were given in SEGA media (eg. the Stay Sonic promotional comic, Sonic the Comic and the SatAm prototype concept art), though given the localisation of the Japanese series' concepts (eg. Dr Robotnik to Dr Eggman) it is unknown if these names are still canon.

  • Flicky: perhaps the most prominently used in Eggman's badnik implantations, this small bird's first appearance in the gaming industry actually outdates Sonic. Flicky and it's respective game were alluded to in Sonic 3D Blast. Of the seven initial animals, this is the only one to have a consistent name in all regions. Flickies were last used by Eggman to power his E-Series line in Sonic Adventure.
  • Ricky (Western name: Sally Acorn): This brown squirrel (or chipmunk) was given a gender change in it's translation to the west (distincted in most media by a pink bow on it's head). Sally Acorn is almost certainly the inspiration for the character of the same name in the Sonic cartoon and Sonic comic continualities, who has a similar species confusion.
  • Pocky (Western name: Johnny Lightfoot): A grey rabbit that is freed in the Green Hill zone, the first Sonic level. A humanoid version was a prominent character in Sonic the Comic.
  • Rocky (Western name: Joe Sushi/Rotor?): a white walrus or seal.
  • Picky (Western name: Porker Lewis): a small pig. A humanoid version was a recurring character in Sonic the Comic.
  • Pecky (Western name: Tux): a black penguin usually freed in aquatic levels.
  • Kucky (Western name: Churps): a white chicken.
  • Locky: a bald eagle that debuted in Sonic 2.
  • Wocky: a small monkey. According to Sonic X, one of these seemingly cute simian bullied Tails before he befriended Sonic.
  • Becky: A small bear that makes one sparse appearance in the Casino Night in the second revision of Sonic 2. A variation of Becky picked on Tails for his inventive skills in Sonic X.
  • Tocky: A turtle that appears as sparsely as Becky. It's one (rather unfortunate) appearance is in the groundless Sky Chase zone.

In later titles such as Sonic Adventure, the small animals were replaced with minimized versions of more realistic animals (though sometimes more bizarre creatures such as fish-like creatures and skeleton dogs were found), often collected and used as an item for Chao, which the pet could 'fed' off of to enhance it's stats and appearance according to the creature. The original seven animals (along with all variations of Flicky) last appeared in the anime Sonic X, cameoing as civilians of Sonic's world (which was separate from earth in this continuality), though Flicky has still made notable appearances in later games such as Sonic Adventure and Sonic Rush.

The President

The President is the head of state of the United Federation, a fictional nation similar to the United States. He resides in Central City, in a building very similar to the White House. He first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, when Sonic and Tails catch up to his limousine in order to use his computer to pinpoint the location of Dr. Eggman, as the doctor had contacted the President seconds earlier. He is then briefly mentioned by Rouge the Bat during Sonic Heroes; if Team Dark stays still for some time, she will say "I haven't seen the President lately." He reappears in Shadow the Hedgehog, where he holds an admiration for Sonic and Shadow for previously saving the world, and appears in several cutscenes trying to deal with the alien invasion of the Black Arms. His presence in the Shadow the Hedgehog game is much more emphasized than in earlier appearances, as he is a major representative to the player on G.U.N. (Guardian Units of Nations)'s actions. Shadow attempts to assassinate the President in one story of the game. In the ending, the President concludes that Professor Gerald Robotnik was actually a hero to the world and should be praised.

In Sonic X, a different president is seen, taking the place of the president seen in the games during the animated adaptations of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2. This president is gray-haired and stockier than the one seen in the games. After Perfect Chaos's attack on Station Square, he is seen signing papers with "Michael R."

The President's Secretary

The President's Secretary appears in Sonic Adventure 2 and is heard in Shadow the Hedgehog. In Sonic Adventure 2, she is seen with the President in his limousine and appears to be oblivious to the events happening around her when Sonic and Tails leap into the limo to pick up Eggman's coordinates, but it might be because she received a message from the agent, Rouge the Bat. In Shadow the Hedgehog she speaks to the President via an answering machine in several cutscenes, and during Expert Mode, she twice reminds him of his casual meetings (such as sharing tea) with other world leaders. A different secretary, but with the same role, appears in Sonic X. She is named Christina Cooper, is 170 cm tall, weighs 50 kg and is 38 years old.In Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, she could be unlocked as an easter egg for the in-game theme.[6]

Tiara Boobowski

Tiara Boobowski is a Manx who was designed for Sonic X-treme, a canceled game for the Sega Saturn. She and her father, Gazebo Boobowski, are the keepers of the Rings of Order and the ancient art of Ring smithing. Fearing that Dr. Robotnik would steal the rings, Tiara and Gazebo call on Sonic to obtain the Rings before Robotnik can.[citation needed]

Tikal

Tikal as shown in Sonic Adventure.

Tikal (ティカル, Tikaru) was designed by Yuji Uekawa to be a light orange, female, anthropomorphic echidna. She first appeared in the game Sonic Adventure, cameoed in later games, and played similar roles in other mediums of the series. She is 14 years old, 95 cm (3 ft 1 in) tall, and her weight is unknown.[7]. Tikal's Japanese voice-overs are done by Kaori Asoh, while Elara Distler and Bella Hudson does her voice in the English language version.

Tikal is the daughter of Chief Pachacamac and is said to have originated from the same tribe as main character Knuckles the Echidna.[7] Her mother had died when she was young, so she depended on her grandmother to raise her. Tikal respected her and believed everything she taught, resulting in her becoming a pacifist. After her grandmother died, Tikal always cherished her words and followed her wishes to oppose Pachacamac's power-hungry ways in invading other countries.[8]

Sometime during her life she found the altar of the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds near the Echidna city, and there she met and befriended the peaceful creatures known as Chao. Unlike the other Echidnas she could come close to the altar despite a mysterious barrier protecting it. During one visit to the altar, she was introduced to Chaos, the guardian of the Chao, who let her stay around the altar due to her friendliness to the Chao. As time passed, Pachacamac and a group of his men stormed the altar to steal the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds in order to obtain total power. After knocking Tikal and some Chao away, Chaos became angered, causing him to kill Pachacamac and his men. Running to the Master Emerald, Tikal remembered the ancient poem about Chaos. Now realizing what it meant, she recited it. The Master Emerald then responded by sealing Chaos and Tikal's spirit in itself.[9]

Several thousand years passed, and Dr. Eggman read the story about Chaos on an ancient stone tablet. In order to recruit Chaos' help in his quest to rule the world, Eggman shattered the Master Emerald, awakening Chaos and Tikal's spirit. Subsequently, Tikal transported Sonic and his friends (most notably Knuckles and once to E-102 Gamma) to the past to know the trouble that befell her world before. Despite this, Chaos managed to obtain the Chaos Emeralds and used their negative energies to become Perfect Chaos. As he began destroying Station Square, Tikal appeared and told Sonic that Chaos had to be sealed in the Master Emerald once again. However, Sonic disagreed, as Chaos would still be angered, and history would likely repeat itself once again. Instead, he used the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic, then battled and defeated Perfect Chaos. After being defeated by the positive energy of the Emeralds, Chaos was neutralized and calm. Tikal then explained to him that the Chao were alright and happy, and she and Chaos rose into the air and disappeared in a flash of light.[10]
