Thriller Bark (スリラーバーク, Surirābāku) is the world's largest ship from the anime and manga One Piece and is owned by Gecko Moria of the Shichibukai. At first glance, because of its size, Thriller Bark seems like an island. It is home to many victims of Moria, as well as revived dead created by Hogback. It is first seen in chapter 443 of the One Piece Manga. The general theme behind the place is one of a complete nightmare full of things from horror stories.

Part in the story

The Straw Hat Pirates became a target of Thriller Bark when they opened a floating barrel they found in the sea that caused a signal flare to be released. After meeting Brook, a revived skeleton-man on a nearby ship, the crew finds themselves trapped within the gates of Thriller Bark just after watching the mysterious skeleton run towards that direction. Nami, Usopp and Chopper end up being stranded on shore when they crash the Mini-Merry. They end up coming across a Cerberus and after running away, meet up with Hildon who leads them to the Mansion. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Robin, and Franky meanwhile landed and began looking for the missing Straw hats. After defeating several random Zombies and a large force of Zombie soldiers the Five Straw hats run into an old man who reveals the secret of Thriller Bark. It is the worlds largest pirate ship captained by Gecko Moria. After entering the Mansion Sanji and Zoro go missing. Luffy Franky and Robin are ambushed and Luffy is captured.

Thriller Bark is apparently home to the famous Doktor Hogback, who vanished many years ago. The zombies and zombie animals on Thriller Bark are examples of his work, aided by the help of Gecko Moria. Gecko Moria creates these zombies by stealing the shadow of unlucky visitors, which is also the soul of the body, and then injecting the shadow into powerful bodies stitched together by Hogback. The result is a much more powerful warrior that has the physical strength of the zombie with the personality and fighting skill of the shadow. Every zombie has a number insigned upon a band around their arm or on their body. So far, numbers 1-200 have consisted of Zombie Animals, 200-400 have been Surprise Zombies, 400-800 have been the Soldier Zombies and 800 onwards have been General Zombies. With the capture of Luffy's shadow, Moria attempts to revive a gigantic monster (zombie #900) with it. However, as the Zombies are a product of the Devil Fruit, they are susceptible to the same weakness of a devil fruit User— in this case, the salt from the sea will "purify" them. Thriller Bark is also linked to Brook's past.

The Straw Hats, minus Nami, having wound up back at the ship and having woken up Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji the crew is launching a counter attack to get back their shadows and Brook's and rescue Nami. Brook meanwhile had begun his battle with Ryuma. During the battle with Ryuma, it is revealed that Brook and his crew were the ones who left Laboon on reverse mountain 50 years ago. Brook is defeated by Ryuma and Zoro takes over and wins in which Brook gets his shadow back. Meanwhile Chopper and Robin face off against Hogback and Cindry. Sanji interrupts Absolom's wedding to Nami and defeats him. Usopp battles Perona and after figuring out her weakness, defeats her. Luffy has finally confronted his Shichibukai opponent and the battle has begun. Yet looming over the whole battle is the unpredictable actions of Oz, who has recently made Thriller Bark begin moving again by moving the sail. If his actions make them move the ship out of the fogbank in the Florian Triangle, then there is a possibility that all those without shadows, including Luffy, Zoro, Robin and Sanji, may disappear if Moria isn't stopped.

However with the defeat of most of Thriller Bark's army things have begun to look up for the Straw Hats. The tables then turned when Oz attacked and defeated all crew members except Luffy (Who was chasing Moria) and Nami (Who Absalom had re-kidnapped). Finally, Nightmare Luffy was able to seemingly defeat Oz in chapter 479 and as one of the pirates on Thriller Bark says "Thriller Bark has fallen." However, Oz returned to the battle, only to have his spine shattered by a collaboration attack from the Straw Hats. Currently, Moria has exited Oz and absorbed 1,000 shadows in order to transform into Nightmare Moria. The sun, meanwhile, has finally emerged. Moria attempts to crush Luffy by using this monstrous strength. But Luffy fights back using Gear Second and Third. As Luffy beats down Moria, the shadows start to "leak out". But Moria tries to prevent this. They all beg for their shadows to return and it is shown that Zoro, Luffy, Sanji, and Robin are starting to disintegrate (After Moria has been defeated). Just in the nick of time, their shadows return and they are all safe. Everyone cheers as they finally are able to walk in the sun again. That is when they see a mysterious giant waiting. It is Bartholomew Kuma, the other Shichibukai. He has orders to kill everyone in Thriller Bark, because the World Government does not want the news of Moria's defeat, to reach out in the world.

Pirate flag

The pirate flag of Moria's ship is a grinning face with bat-like wings. [1]

Ship

Thriller Bark's shape is a round hull. The island in the center is connected with the outer hull by four colossal chains. The Island is ringed by a broken battlement. It is covered with forest that is full of Zombie animals, and a large graveyard where the majority of the zombie soldiers sleep. At the center is tower/mast of the ship and several other buildings including Hogback's massive mansion. Inside the mansion is Hogback's laboratory where he creates the Zombies, as well as a room where inactive zombie generals sleep. Connecting the Mansion to the mast are two large bridges. The larger, upper bridge contains Perona's wonder garden which her room overlooks. The lower, smaller bridge was a normal stone bridge until Franky destroyed it. Currently it has been replaced by a web made by Talleran.

The tower doubles as the main mast of the ship. Inside is Moria's quarters and Perona's room. The tower also has a massive freezer where Oz was stored. On the port side of the tower there is a sloping structure that leads from the tower to the ground near the battlements, which was revealed to be a large stairway. After stealing a beings shadow they're taken down the stairs to their ship which is caught in a giant spider web, after which the ship is released from Thriller Bark. From Brook's earlier statements about Thriller Bark it would appear it was once an Island that Gecko Moria took over and converted into a ship.

Attacks

The method Thriller Bark uses to attack people is after locating them with a flare the ship comes up and swallows the smaller ships. The captured vessels are maneuvered to the port side where there is a giant spider web and an entrance to the island. Once lured inside a crew is attacked by Zombies and captured. They are transported to the mast where Moria removes a persons shadow after which there taken down a stair that leads from the mast directly back to the trapped ships after which they are released into the Florian Triangle.

Inhabitants on Thriller Bark

The Mysterious Four

Although most of the Thriller Bark crew are zombies, four of the most powerful and crucial members of the crew are not. Known as the Mysterious Four of Thriller Bark, these humans are skilled either with the power of devil fruits similar to supernatural abilities or (in the case of Hogback) in charge of the creation and maintenance of the zombie army.

Gecko Moria

  • Former Bounty: 320,000,000 Beli
  • Seiyū: Unknown
  • Voice Actor: Unknown

Moria is the captain of the world's biggest pirate ship, Thriller Bark, and has a former bounty of 320,000,000 Beli. Moria apparently has the power to turn people's shadows (including his own) into solid objects due to the power of the Kage Kage no Mi (Shadow Shadow Fruit), but the full extent of his powers are yet unknown. He is the one who stole Brook's, and various other beings' shadows. The loss of a being's shadow causes them to go into a two day coma, and to be vaporized if they come in contact with sunlight. The shadow acts like a second soul, duplicating its owner's movements and mannerisms. Moria creates zombies by inserting a shadow into a lifeless corpse. Coupled with physiologically enhanced bodies engineered by Dr. Hogback, he is able to create powerful and obedient zombie warriors. However, if the original owner of the shadow dies, the zombie created from that person's shadow will also die. As a result, Moria has the de-shadowed people placed on their ship and removed from Thriller Bark.

He is an extremely large man and has a devil-like appearance, mainly due to his horns and shadowy figure. His size is equivalent to fellow Shichibukai member Bartholomew Kuma, but he creates smaller (but still impressively large) shadow clones to do his work. He wields a pair of gigantic scissors that he uses to cut the shadows of his victims from their bodies upon seizing them. He is a very calm person and is not even bothered by the fact that his ship and crew are being destroyed. He also has X like marks above his nose and below his chin that may be stitches. Moria's motto is to rely on others to reach his goals. His favorite phrase is: "You do it!", reflecting his slothful personality and tendency to leave all work for his underlings. This also expands to his fighting style, as he prefers to lay back and let his own shadow, Doppelman, who he can switch places with at any time, battle with the powers of the Kage Kage no Mi.

He also captured Luffy and took away his shadow, placed it in the giant 900th zombie named Oz, and plans to avenge the death of his former crewmates, who were killed by Kaidou, one of the Yonkou, though it states that Moria fought equally against Kaidou. Luffy then found Moria inside Oz's freezer, and started to battle him. Moria has revealed that the only way for all of the shadows to return to their original masters is for him to give them the order to do so. The battle was interrupted when Oz went on a rampage, Moria fled followed closely by Luffy. When Luffy caught what appeared to be Moria, it turned out to merely be Doppelman. He entered the body of his greatest zombie, controlling him like a robot to fight against the opposing pirates. During the fight Moria demonstrated another technique that allows him to control (and stretch) his zombies by moving their shadow with his. Chopper states that this is "reversing physics" as typically the shadow follows the body, not the other way around.

Luffy apparently defeats Moria resulting in a great cheer from the resistance pirates. But Oz manages to stand up again to challenge the straw hat crew. Oz was last seen crashing to the ground after being hit by Luffy's Gear 3rd form. After Oz is defeated (though not purified) Moria rises from Oz and summons all of the shadows (even Luffy/Oz's) from the zombies and fuses them into his body. This causes him to turn into his Shadow Asgard form which looks like a giant iguana/gecko-like monster with a very fat neck, his hair appearing like spines running down his neck and standing on all fours. However, Moria does not seem to have complete control over all one thousand shadows, as seen when Luffy punches Moria, he vomits up shadows. After Luffy defeats him a second time, Moria tells him to see the horrors that await in the 'New World'. Currently he is unconscious.

According to the man speaking to Kuma over the Den Den Mushi, if Moria is still alive they would like to have him continue to represent the Shichibukai for the time being and they will decide what to do about him later.

Dr. Hogback

Master of the Mansion

Doktor Hogback (ドクトル・ホグバック, Dokutoru Hogubakku) is a world famous doctor, who according to Chopper saved as many people as there are stars in the sky. One day he disappeared from the public eye, causing turmoil in the medical community. Nami, Usopp and Chopper meet him on Thriller Bark, and he explains to them that he is researching the nature of life and death using the zombies on the island. This is later exposed as a lie when the crew discovers that Hogback himself created the zombies, and is a crew mate of Gecko Moria, who breathes life into Hogback's zombies with the shadows he steals, transferring the fighting ability and personality of the shadow's former owner into the body. He is later seen meeting with Gecko Moria, Perona and Absalom concerning the creation of Zombie #900 and the removal of Luffy's shadow.

Hogback faced off against Chopper, who, as a doctor, resents his experiments in zombification for being intended for personal gain rather than the progress of medical science. However, much to Chopper and Robin's dismay, Hogback had prepared Jigoro and Sanji's zombie for the battle to come. After Chopper and Robin being defeated, Hogback and Chopper have a conversation, where Hogback reveals that he never cared about saving lives and the reason he went into hiding was because so many people were coming to him seeking treatment, and that he became a doctor only for the money. Robin outsmarts him by telling him to order Jigoro and Penguin to jump out the window. After facing the betrayal of his beloved zombie version of Cindry, Chopper and Robin prepare to finish him off with a suplex wrestling attack, but the rampage by the massive Oz prevents them from finishing the attack. As Hogback tries to speak with the giant zombie, Oz squishes him under his massive foot. It's shown, however, in chapter 483 that Hogback somehow survived Oz's attack.

Trivia

  • Like many other characters in One Piece, Hogback has a unique laugh (fosfosfosfos).
  • As revealed in chapter 456, Dr. Hogback's dream was to create the world's strongest zombie. This dream is pretty much fulfilled with the introduction of Oz.
  • In chapter 456, Dr. Hogback reveals that he met Gecko Moria ten years ago.
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; Hogback seems to be based on mad scientists, in particular Dr. Frankenstein.

Absalom

Zombie Soldier and General Zombie Commander

Nicknamed Absalom of the Graveyard (墓場のアブサロム, Hakaba no Abusaromu), he is one of Gecko Moria's henchmen. He commands the soldier sect of zombies on Thriller Bark, and his subordinates have a tendency of making fun of his perverted nature, referring to him as "Erosalom" (Perv-salom). Although first revealed as an invisible man, his true form is that of a man with various animal parts surgically implanted onto his person by Dr. Hogback. These animal parts include a lion's face, the thick skin of an elephant and the condensed muscles of various bears and gorillas. He has eaten the Suke Suke no mi[1] (Clear Clear fruit), which allows him to turn invisible on demand and to turn objects or persons invisible, if he touches them. He uses this ability to conceal a pair of bazookas strapped to his arms, which allows him to fire blasts which seem to to come from nowhere. The blasts are incredibly powerful, capable of mowing down trees and setting fiery explosions.

He intends on taking Nami as his bride, stating he prefers weaker women, after unsuccessfully trying to abduct Robin and moving his attention to a showering Nami. In a comic twist, one of the animal zombies of the island, a boar woman named Lola is completely infatuated with Absalom and tries adamantly to marry him. Eventually he catches up with Nami and abducts her only to get electrocuted by her Perfect Clima Tact. Unfortunately, he mistakes the jolt from the electricity for the feeling of love. He was most recently seen trying to marry Nami, who was unconscious at the time, only to have the ceremony interrupted by Sanji. Sanji holds a personal grudge against Absalom, not only for touching Robin and attempting to marry Nami, but for eating the one devil fruit whose power he truly craved (which he had hoped to use to secretly peek on girls). He was defeated by Sanji, but later revived and restole Nami for his bride once again during Oz's rampage throughout Thriller Bark.

During the ceremony at the moment he is about to kiss Nami to end the ceremony she wakes up and manages to avoid all his kisses. Lola then appears to help Nami but she is easily defeated by Absalom. Nami decides to stop running and turns to face Absalom when she saw Lola hurt. She uses her Thunder Ball: Swing Arm attack to strike Absalom. Earlier on, this attack had no effect on him, but due to Absalom's initial injuries when fighting Sanji, he is defeated with that attack. Waking after Moria's defeat, he sails off with Hogback still hoping for a living wife to find for his own.

Trivia

  • Like many other characters in One Piece, Absalom has a unique laugh, his sounding somewhat like a growl (garurururu).
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; Absalom seems to be based on The Invisible Man as well as animal-like humanoids such as The Wolf Man (even though he is not a lycan).
  • At one point a lion with a human face was seen prior to Absalom's introduction. Oda later confirmed that the lion's face was indeed used on Absalom face by Hogback, however the lion's human face is not Absalom's and that the rest of his human face may be on another zombie elsewhere.

Perona

Zombie Animal and Surprise Zombie Commander

  • Seiyuu:

Nicknamed the Ghost Princess, Perona (ぺローナ) Perona is a girl dressed in a style inspired by Gothic Lolita and a commander in the army of Gecko Moria on his island-ship of Thriller Bark. She is also the commander of Perona Wonder Garden, where an army of animal zombies live and protect her. She looted the Thousand Sunny with some zombies and later took on guard duty while Absalom was away attempting to marry Nami. She cannot stand anything that she feels is not cute, such as insects.

Perona has eaten the Horo Horo no mi[2] (Ghost Ghost fruit) which allows her to create several ghostly apparitions. The ghosts can pass through someone to cause them to go into a sort of induced depression, although Usopp was completely unaffected due to his natural pessimism. Other versions of these ghosts can be used as extremely powerful bombs and vary in size. Aside from being able to create ghosts, Perona herself is also able to use ghostly powers such as flight, intangibility, and size manipulation which she used to terrify Usopp. Apparently in her ghostly form Perona is unable to manipulate tangible objects. This is exemplified after Perona had passed her arms into Usopp's chest and threatened to crush his heart, and then immediately after admitting that she is unable to do things like that. In order to use her ghostly powers, however, Perona must leave her physical body leaving it vulnerable to attack, a fact figured out by Usopp, who was able to trick her and glue her to her bed as her spirit rejoined her body. He then proceeded to quickly scare her into unconsciousness using rubber roaches and an inflatable "ten ton" hammer.

She was recently awoken by her servants. When she realized that Oz was going on a rampage to destroy the Strawhats, she immediately decided to escape the island on the Thousand Sunny and ordered her animals to get some treasure and food. However her escape plan is interrupted with the sudden arrival of Bartholomew Kuma of the Shichibukai on the ship, asking for Moria. When Perona responded that she was no longer Moria's underling and that she was about to leave the island, Bartholomew responded by asking her where she would go on a vacation. After some initial confusion Perona replied that she would want to go to a "humid, ancient castle, full of creepiness" (a perfect description of Thriller Bark), but seems angry at him for 'distracting and humiliating' her. When she attempts to fight back against him, Bartholomew makes her disappear by touching Perona with his bare hand. Her current status is unknown.

Trivia

  • Like many other characters in One Piece, Perona has a unique laugh (horohorohoro, which contains the word horo, meaning ghost. It is also the name of her devil fruit).
  • As revealed in chapter 456, Perona's dream is to have her own country made up of cute zombie animals with her as their leader.
  • Perona had no knowledge of Brook nor about the incident that occurred five years ago when he first appeared because she slept through the entire incident, scolding Kumasy when he tried to alert her.
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; Perona is based off ghosts

Zombies

After facing failure in using a living crew to become a player in the New World, Moria's philosophy warped into using an undead army of zombies, believing that no matter how many times they are defeated, he can continue to make them as long as he had dead corpses as bodies and his shadow-stealing abilities to get victims to rob and make the zombies come to life. Recently, every zombies has been "purified" when Moria performed the "Shadow Asgard"-technique as a last resort against the Straw hats. The following is a list of some of the more significant zombies in his crew.

Victoria Cindry

Servant of Hogback

Victoria Cindry (ビクトリア・シンドリー, Bikutoria Shindorī) is Dr. Hogback's servant. She hates plates, to the extent of serving food directly onto the table, and constantly expresses her wish for all of the world's plates to vanish. According to Hogback, she has had a tragic past - her master proposed to her, that she could test his love for her. But then she crushed his ten valuable plates, and he rejected her, and thus she has a habit of throwing plates.

However, Nami, Usopp and Chopper had found a room with a lot of photographs of her when she was apparently happy, healthy, and alive. According to a newspaper article in her room, she was once a famous stage actress called Victoria Cindry. Ten years ago Dr. Hogback proposed to her but she rejected him because she already had a fiance. Later she fell from stage and died in an accident. Dr. Hogback was devastated when he found out and later made a deal with Gecko Moria that he'd work for him if he could bring Cindry back to life. Hogback later digs up her corpse but doesn't use her own shadow to revive her because she rejected him and Hogback claims he only needed her beauty. Nami suspected her true background was that she was a noblewoman, not a servant in her past life. [2]

Although she assists Dr. Hogback with his creation of zombies, she has admitted to not like her master's experiments, even if she herself is a revived creation. [3] She reappears in chapter 456, attending the meeting with Dr. Hogback. She comments to Absalom that he will never get his bride (Nami), and that Dr. Hogback will never get his either after Perona reported that Nami, Usopp and Chopper were never delivered to her. When Chopper learns of how Cindry was turned into a zombie, he spoke of how this process was an insult to the concept of life and begged Cindry to resist Hogback's control and think of what her relatives would think if they could see her now. This apparently affects Cindry who has found herself crying and unable to move her body. The effect seemed to only be mommentary but relapsed when Oz broke in and was about to stomp on Dr. Hogback and her. She gave Chopper the smile she had in life before appearing to be crushed by Oz. She was briefly shown in chapter 481 unharmed but her shadow (along with all of the other zombies) is soon removed by Moria's "Shadow Asgard", powering him into a monstrous reptilian form.

When Moria is defeated, the owner of the shadow inside Cindry is seen.

Trivia

  • Her zombie number is 400.
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; Despite being a human and later a zombie, her appearance suggests she is based on the idea of the "living puppet/doll" made popular in horror by movies like Child's Play. This is due to her doll-like eyes, coupled with an alternative translation of 'Cindry' (Thin Dolly) and made apparent by the stitches on her face often resembling those of such horror film-based dolls.

Hildon

Hildon (ヒルドン, Hirudon) is one of Dr. Hogback's servants. He was introduced in chapter 444, and anime episode 339. He takes Nami, Usopp and Chopper to the mysterious Dr. Hogback's mansion. He looks like a vampire (he quite possibly is), and in chapter 445 it was revealed that he can fly with bat wings. His actions so far have been somewhat untrustworthy - he left Nami, Chopper and Usopp in a cemetery with dangerous zombies. In chapter 447, Hildon reappeared and offered to take Nami, Chopper and Usopp to their bedrooms. They refused his offer due to his previous actions. He seemed sincere and was annoyed with the Dining Room Surprise Zombies pressuring him. He then later reappeared to tell Perona that Luffy was captured and inform Perona and Absalom to attend a meeting with Dr. Hogback and Gecko Moria. When the Straw Hats began their counter attack he alerted Moria, Hogback, and Perona. Like all the zombies, his shadow was absorbed by Moria's "Shadow Asgard".

Trivia

  • His zombie number is 21.
  • Due to his appearances it seems that his main job is that of a messenger and scout for Thriller Bark.
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; Hildon is based off vampires

Zombie animals

One of the four types of zombies on board the ship, the zombie animals are under the control of Perona. A large number of them live in Perona's domain. Nami, Usopp and Tony Tony Chopper have recently run into a large number of them.

Individual zombie animals:

  • Kumasy (クマシー, Kumashī): A patchwork bear zombie with a zipper in its back and a hollow body. Despite his less-threatening appearance, Kumasy has greater strength than a full-grown bear and is the captain of Perona's Zombie Animals. Perona hates it when Kumasy talks and scolds him for doing so. Nami, Usopp, and Chopper were able to elude their zombie pursuers by unzipping Kumasy's back and hiding inside. It is very likely that he knew they were hiding inside of him, but since Perona is constantly telling him to shut up, he could not tell her. His name is commonly translated into English as Bearsy. He was purified by Usopp in Chapter 465.
  • Cerberus: (Takahiro Fujimoto) A sewn-together dog with three heads (one of which is a fox). The Straw Hats tame him and ride him to Hogback's mansion. His zombie number is 82.
  • Risky Brothers: A duo of zombie squirrels who deliver captives to Moria in coffins. They were knocked out by Chopper. They fight with an axe and a saw. Two pirates known as the "Risky Brothers" also exist in the Rolling Pirates, possibly the duo used for the zombie squirrels, due to the nature of the zombies on Thriller Bark.
  • Penguin Zombie Trio: Three penguin zombies who live in the Wonder Garden, they were among the group that ambushed Nami, Usopp and Chopper. One named Inuppe has Sanji's shadow but was removed from battle after Dr. Hogback was tricked into making him jump out a window. He was not finally defeated, however, until Gecko Moria stole his shadow to fuel his "Shadow Asgard" technique.
  • Vice-Captain Gentleman Hippo: a zombie hippo that attacked Usopp in order to avenge Kumasy. Usopp was able to quickly defeat him using a charged up impact dial.

Lola

  • Seiyuu:

Lola (ローラ, Rōra) is a zombie-warthog many times the size of a normal human, found on Thriller Bark. She is fanatically in love with Absalom. In her first appearance in chapter 451, she begs him to marry her, but is frantically rejected because he wanted a "living female human" as bride and not a "dead and rotting female warthog". She took his rejection with tears and anger, and tried to forcibly make him sign a marriage contract. After learning that Nami was the "beautiful and weak" woman Absalom wanted as his wife, she flew into an even bigger rage, vowing to find and destroy her. However, Nami was able to get her off her back by claiming she is "Namizou", a gay transvestite male and talking things over with the warthog. She appears to fight with style called "Bridal Martial Arts" and a wedding veil and in chapter 471 she is shown using two large swords.

She reappears in chapter 471, interrupting Absalom's and Nami's 'binding kiss'. She then shouts at Nami (who she still believed was named Namizou) that she had betrayed her and accused her of trying to marry Absalom for herself. Nami denies this but Lola attacks her. However this is proven to be merely an act since none of Lola's attacks hit Nami and she tells her to run while she holds Absalom off. She then explains that she had come to help Nami and called Nami her friend before turning on Absalom and trying to kiss him herself. However Absalom sees Nami running away and in rage uses his cannons to blast Lola. Nami upon seeing this, stops running, remembering Lola calling her, her friend, and attacks him with a Thunder Charge. At first the attack seems unaffective (like the time she used it in Perona's Garden) but he soon falls unconscious, the zombie priest mussing that he must have overexerted himself fighting Sanji.

After defeating Absalom Nami rushes to Lola's side and admits that when she first met her she was scared of her and tells her that she is actually a woman. Lola merely replies with a smile, "...You idiot. I know that already." much to Nami's relief. Lola then goes on to take advantage of Absalom's 'guard being down' to marry him.

In a recent chapter, Luffy meets the captain of the Rolling Pirates, named Lola the Proposer. Although it is unknown at this point, the nature of the shadow manipulation suggests that she is the one who's shadow was stolen for the zombie Lola of Moria's crew. Lola was recently purified, along with the other zombies, by Moria's "Shadow Asgard" technique to power him up in chapter 481.

Surprise zombies

The surprise zombies are zombies disguised as pictures and furniture. The dining room ones are under the control of Buhichuck. They are defeated by the Straw Hats, but manage to get a message to Hogback that the crew is inside the mansion.

Individual surprise zombies:

  • Rug-Bear: A zombified bearskin rug who is one of the largest Surprise Zombies.
  • Jack-In-The-Box: A zombie treasure chest that guards Cindry's room. Nami's greed tempts her to open the chest, and he pops out and scares the Straw Hats out of the room. His zombie number is 256.
  • Wall Zombie: A zombie wall that drops from the ceiling to seal off a corridor.

Buhichuck

Boss of the Dining Room Surprise Zombies

  • Seiyuu:

Buhichuck (ブヒチャック, Buhichakku) is the boss of the "surprise zombies", in the dining room. At first glance he looks like an ordinary taxidermied pig's head mounted on the wall, but he can come to life and wield a pair of swords mounted below him as throwing weapons using concealed hands. According to him, there are more surprise zombies hidden in every room of Doktor Hogback's mansion. Luffy, Franky, Robin and Zoro forced him to show them around the castle, but Zoro went missing. Then, the zombie generals appeared, and Buhichuck ran off. His shadow was stolen by Gecko Moria's "Shadow Asgard" technique in chapter 481.

Trivia

  • His zombie number is 298.
  • His name is often translated as Oinkchuck.
  • Buhichuck's dialog in the manga is written in handwriting rather than typed text.
  • Like many other characters in One Piece, Buhichuck has a unique laugh (buhihihihi), which would probably be rendered in English as oioioioink.

Soldier zombies

The grunt forces of the island, the soldier zombies are under the control of Absalom. Though formidable, the zombies are nonetheless comedic and generally unhappy with their lot in life. They have recently been seen disco dancing to celebrate "Zombienight", the beginning of their attack on the Straw Hat Crew.

Individual soldier zombies:

  • Mario: A large Frankenstein's monster-like creature who has yet to be activated, but who is apparently Hogback's strongest creation. His zombie number is 741.
  • Nin: An archer zombie who signals Moria of the Straw Hats' presence on the island.
  • Gyoro: Another of the three Zombies who work as Moria's personal servants.
  • Bao: One of Moria's personal Zombies.

Zombie generals

Referred to as Legendary warriors of ancient times, these zombies are way above the rest as far as combat ability is concerned. They are a pretty diverse group mostly consisting of heavily armed and armored knights and various felons. While they remain vulnerable to fire like all zombies, they carry buckets of water in order to overcome this weakness. All the general zombies (except for Jigoro and Talaran) were defeated by Oz when they tried to stop him from moving the rudder of Thriller Bark.

Individual zombie generals:

  • Captain John (キャプテン・ジョン, Kyaputen Jon): Introduced drinking from a bottle of alcohol, he was criticized by Absalom for lagging behind compared to his compatriot generals, and not living up to his notorious reputation.
  • Jigoroh of the Wind (風のジゴロウ, Kaze no Jigorō): Once killed 7000 pirates to protect his own family; died at age 59. He possess the shadow of Zoro. Jigoroh, along with Sanji's Zombie, has entered the battle between Chopper, Robin, Hogback and Cindry and was recently removed from the battle after Dr. Hogback was tricked into making him jump out a window. He was not permanently defeated, though, until Gecko Moria stole his shadow using "Shadow Asgard." His zombie number is 850.
  • Talaran (タララン, Tararan): a bizarre, gigantic combination of a spider and a monkey. He has web glands in his hands and commands an army of "spider mice," who quietly kidnap victims in the mansion with their special, unbreakable webbing. He was cut and fed salt by Brook and consequently lost his shadow. It can be presumed that the shadow returned to its owner.

Trivia:

  • In chapter 233, Buggy the Clown is seen looking for the treasure of the legendary Captain John. While it isn't confirmed yet if it's the same Captain John as the zombie general, it seems likely given Oda's nature when it comes to foreshadowing.
  • Many members of Thriller Bark seem to be based on old Horror movie character types; The Zombie Soldiers, Zombie Animals, Surprise Zombie and Zombie generals seem to be based off zombie slaves.

Samurai Ryuuma

Zombie General and Guardian

  • Seiyuu:

Samurai Ryuuma (サムライ・リューマ, Samurai Ryūma) is a deceased elite swordsman from the New World island "Wano Country" (a reference to "Wa no Kuni", i.e. Japan), who Hogback said to be centuries old. He is largely known for slaying a dragon. He has considerable ability with his katana, as he struck down Usopp, Nami, and Chopper in one motion, walked ten feet and conversed with Cindry before they noticed they were attacked. Though Usopp states that he used the back of his sword letting them alive and thus showing that he might not be such a bad guy.

Five years prior the skeleton Brook had his shadow stolen by Gecko Moria who, along with the mad Doktor Hogback used the shadow in the revival of Ryuma. Although Brook had tried to fight back, the zombie easily defeated him and removed him from Thriller Bark. Recently with the return of the massive ship into the Florian Triangle, Brook has stormed the ship and approached Ryuuma once again in an another attempt to defeat him and reclaim his shadow for his own body. However, Ryuuma showed his easy domination over the skeleton man, defeating him with his own style.

Brook was soon saved by the Strawhat Pirates' resident swordsman, Roronoa Zoro, who proceeded to jump on the chance to fight a legendary swordsman. Although seemingly evenly matched, Zoro eventually gained the upper hand on Ryuuma, defeating with a dragon themed attack which set the zombie's body ablaze. Upon his defeat, he bequeaths his sword, the Shuusui to Zoro before his shadow returns to Brook and his body returned to its lifeless state. Zoro gladly accepts the sword, saying he wished he could have met the samurai while he was alive, and that out of respect for him, he would pretend as though their duel never happened.

Trivia:

  • It bares note that Ryuuma is similar in nature to another "Ryuuma" who appeared in Monsters, an early Oda story created prior to the start of One Piece. In that tale, a samurai named Ryuuma from a world similar to Japan killed a dragon (which is ironic considering Zombie Ryuuma's defeat at Zoro's hands, as the latter used a dragon themed attack). This was later confirmed to be the same character in one SBS, thus making the storyline of Monsters part of One Piece.

Oz

Oz

Special Zombie

  • Seiyuu:

The 'Special Zombie' known as Oz (オーズ, Ōzu) is the 900th zombie created by Dr. Hogback for Gecko Moria. His physical appearance is that of a massive, horned creature even larger than a normal giant. In his past life he was known as 'the Demon of the Frozen Land', having conquered and mercilessly ruled many countries and islands over five-hundred years ago. His 'rebirth' as a zombie was an event of great importance to the crew of Thriller Bark. In order to make Oz the strongest zombie ever created, Gecko Moria used his devil fruit power to implanted the shadow of Straw Hat Luffy into the zombie's body. Upon his awakening, Oz displayed some of Luffy's stronger personality traits and some of his memories. At first he refused to obey Moria's orders and caused a lot of destruction around Thriller Bark, including destroying many of Moria's zombies and generals. This was primarily due to Luffy's shadow not being fully integrated into Oz's body. Eventually, Luffy's shadow was fully absorbed and Oz's 'obedient' personality emerged.

Having Luffy's shadow in his body, Oz's 'attacks' have names similar to Luffy's moves (Gomu Gomu no Scythe, Gomu Gomu no Volcano). Even though Oz's body cannot stretch like Luffy's, his extreme size, arm reach, and inhuman strength makes his attack no less dangerous. Despite his immense size, Oz is insanely fast, moving so quick that he almost disappears for an instant before unleashing an attack. Making matters worse, small doses of salt have no effect on him because of his size. In addition, Oz has Luffy's IQ even after becoming obedient, as demonstrated when he didn't recognize Usopp as being Sogeking.

After Oz became obedient, Moria ordered him to destroy the Straw Hat crew and he set out to find them. When Oz cornered the Straw Hat crew, minus Luffy and Nami (who was kidnapped again by Absalom) and including Brook, he began a relentless assault on them. Despite the strength of Luffy's crew, they were no match for Oz and were seemingly defeated effortlessly. Despite this, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Chopper, Franky and Nico Robin confronted Oz during his search for Nami, chastizing him for doubting the strength of his shadow's crewmates. The Straw Hats pirates were able to successfully work together and were able to topple Oz once during the fight. However, he is soon taken control of by Moria himself, turning him into his robotic servant to crush the Straw Hats all at once.

In a recent chapter, he reveals he now has the ability to stretch just like Luffy not by gaining rubber powers but by Moria using his own Kage-Kage abilities to make Oz appear to stretch, using the pliability for maneuvers not even Luffy could perform such as changing into a Ball. He defeats Franky, Brook, Sanji, Chopper, Nico Robin and Zoro. He begins to try and crush Usopp and Nami but Nightmare Luffy saves them so fast Oz didn't notice them not being under his feet. As Oz punches at Nightmare Luffy, Luffy stops the punch with one hand and declares that he is the only Luffy, and sends Oz as well as Moria flying into the forest. From there onwards, Nightmare Luffy pummels Oz to such a degree that Moria is helpless to retort. Soon after, Oz and Moria were brought to an end from the sheer difference in power.

In spite of all Luffy's attacks, however, Oz was able to get back up because his undead body didn't even feel anything. He proceeded to resume his attack (though without the unconscious Moria's help) as all of the fallen Straw Hat pirates stood back up. By working together the Straw Hats were able to restrain Oz, force him to stand up perfectly straight (so that his spine couldn't absorb strong impacts), and Luffy finished the job by dealing a pulverizing Gear 3rd Giant Bazooka to Oz's face, shattering his skeleton. Though he remained alive after the attack (though useless with part of his bones shattered), his shadow was soon stolen back by Moria with the activation of his "Shadow Asgard" ability.

His name is the Japanese name for the Norse god Óðr.

Members' strength

Being made up of mostly zombies, Thriller Bark can be labeled only as a nightmare come to life. Most of the inhabitants are apparently afraid of fire, just like many monsters in classic horror movies. Furthermore, like most Japanese ghosts, they can be purified with sea-salt, which is what Brook had intended to do. The whole island is apparently created to lure in and trap pirates and other criminals. Once the said crew is trapped, the residents of Thriller Bark then attack them. The greatest threat is Gecko Moria, who has stolen many shadows on Thriller Bark. He is a Shichibukai with a former bounty of 320 million belli, 20 million higher than Monkey D. Luffy. The zombies attempt to capture strong pirates, thereby allowing Moria to resurrect dead bodies by stealing the shadows of the captured and transferring them to the dead bodies.

So far they have easily taken Luffy, Zoro and Sanji (the Straw Hats' best fighters) without any problems. Sanji and Zoro were taken without the others even realizing they were gone. Franky and Robin have also come close to defeat but have managed to slip through and avoid capture with the help of Brook. while Usopp, Nami and Chopper were captured successfully but escaped soon after.

To aid them, they have the bodies of hundreds of dead legendary warriors from all over the world frozen ready for use with the shadow (soul) of strong fighters they come across. Also, they have the dreaded body of the late monster Oz (zombie 900), who Hogback turned into a zombie to help Moria create the Zombie King with Luffy's shadow. It is stated zombie 900 has the strength to make Moria into the Pirate King. Despite all this potential power so far every member of Thriller Bark failed for one reason or another against the Straw Hats counter strike. However Oz defeats the Straw Hats (minus Luffy and Nami) without much difficulty, though they recover rather swiftly and launch a counterattack on him. Luffy defeats Oz with Moria inside by using Gomu Gomu No Thunderstorm, powered by the strength of 100 shadows, along with one final Gear Third attack, Gomu Gomu No Giant Bazooka.
