Template:Future sport The 2008 NBA Draft will be held on June 26, 2008 at the Washington Mutual Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The draft will be broadcast in the United States on ESPN. The draft order will be determined by lottery. The 2008 lottery is scheduled for May 20, in Secaucus, New Jersey, and the results are to be revealed on ESPN at 8:00-8:30 EDT.[3]

Eligibility rules

The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the NBA and its players union, which took effect with the 2005-06 season, established eligibility rules that ended the former practice of jumping from high school to the NBA. These rules, first used in the 2006 draft, effect players of all nationalities.

  • All drafted players must be at least 19 years old during the calendar year of the draft. In terms of dates, players eligible for the 2008 draft must be born on or before December 31, 1989.[1]
  • Any player who is not an "international player", as defined in the CBA, must be at least one year removed from the graduation of his high school class.[1]

The "one year out of high school" requirement is in addition to the age requirement. For example, highly-touted USC freshman O.J. Mayo will be eligible for the first time with this draft, even though he turned 19 in November 2006, six months before his high school graduation.

Definition of "international players"

The CBA defines "international players" as those who meet all of the following criteria:[2]

  • Permanently resident outside the U.S. for at least three years before the draft while playing basketball outside the U.S.
  • Have never enrolled in a U.S. college or university.
  • Did not complete high school in the U.S.

Automatic eligibility

Players born on or before December 31 1989 who are at least one year removed from the graduation of their high school class and do not meet the criteria for "international" players are automatically eligible if they meet any of the following criteria:[3]

  • They have completed all of their U.S. college eligibility.
  • If they graduated from high school in the U.S., but did not enroll in a U.S. college or university, four years have passed since their high school graduation.
  • If they did not graduate from high school in the U.S., four years have passed since their high school class graduated.
  • They have signed a contract with a professional basketball team outside of the NBA, anywhere in the world, and have played under that contract.

Those who have reached the minimum eligibility age of 19 and meet the criteria for "international" players are automatically eligible if:

  • They are least 22 during the calendar year of the draft (i.e., born on or before December 31 1986),[4] or
  • They have signed a contract with a professional basketball team outside of the NBA within the United States, and have played under that contract.[5]

Early entrants

A player who is not automatically eligible must declare his eligibility for the draft by notifying the NBA offices in writing no later than 60 days before the draft.[6][7] This year's declaration deadline fell on April 27.

The "in writing" part of the rule is significant. One player, Earl Clark of Louisville, had announced on April 5 that he was declaring for the draft,[8] but never submitted the required paperwork to officially declare, and stated on April 18 that he would return to Louisville for his junior season.[9]

College players who have hired agents

These players have either hired agents or announced that they will hire agents.[10] Once a player hires an agent, he forfeits any remaining NCAA eligibility.

College players who have not hired agents

A player who has declared for early entry into the draft is allowed to withdraw from the draft no later than 10 days before the draft (on or before June 16 2008).[20] If he does not sign with an agent before withdrawing from the draft, he retains his college eligibility—as long as he has not declared for and withdrawn from a previous draft. Although the CBA allows a player to withdraw from the draft twice,[20] NCAA rules only permit one withdrawal.[21]

the draft order of the teams in the second round cannot be known until after the lottery.[44]

Traded picks

Mock drafts

Mock drafts are available online on sites such as DraftExpress.com[47] and NBADraft.net[48]. Most mock drafts have Kansas State forward Michael Beasley as the first pick in the draft, although Memphis guard Derrick Rose has moved up on most lists due much in part to his play during the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
