History

The college was established during the formation of Ontario’s college system in 1967. Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology were established on May 21, 1965. The school was founded in 1967 as part of a provincial initiative to create many such institutions to provide career-oriented diploma and certificate courses, as well as continuing education programs to Ontario communities.
The Welland Campus is home to programs in technology, communications, health and community, policing and public safety, and automotive.
In March 2004, the School of Hospitality and Tourism and the Niagara Culinary Institute relocated from the Maid of the Mist Campus in Niagara Falls to a new facility on the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus. The new facility features food preparation laboratories, a 100-seat dining room, a Wine-tasting lab, Esthetics spa and the Niagara College Teaching Winery – the first commercial teaching winery in Canada. The NOTL Campus is known for its state-of-the-art facilities, "living labs” for environmental, horticulture, hospitality and tourism, and business programs. It is also home to the Centre for Advanced Visualization, which applies virtual reality technology to projects from around the world.
In response to the rapid growth of Niagara’s tourism sector and the anticipated demand for thousands of new workers, the College established the Tourism Industry Development Centre (TIDC). Housed on the Maid of the Mist Campus in Niagara Falls, the TIDC serves as a dedicated industry development and training resource for the hospitality and tourism sector. In 2007 the Ontario Street Site was added for the expanding Health & Community Studies programs.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, opened in 2002, is located at Glendale Avenue and the Queen Elizabeth Way, the major transportation corridor between Toronto and the US. The three-storey educational facility, featuring a state-of-the-art greenhouse centre, the new Niagara Waters Spa, the Niagara Culinary Institute and its 100-seat dining room and the Niagara College Teaching Winery, is located at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, a World Biosphere Reserve. The campus is enveloped in an ecological band of wetlands, vineyards and community gardens, becoming a living laboratory for the college's thriving environment and horticulture programs. With more than 1,850 m². (20,000 sq ft.) of greenhouse space, as well as living labs, container and field nursery operations, and onsite greenhouse equipment, students cultivate plants of many varieties year round that are sold to the public and used to beautify the 68 acre Campus. In addition to the award-winning Niagara College Teaching Winery, the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus has three on-site vineyards and a Wine Sensory Laboratory.

Officially opened in March of 2007, the Ontario Street satellite site is home to the College’s Practical Nursing and Personal Support Worker programs, and represents a unique partnership with the Niagara Health System (NHS). Through this partnership, students benefit by learning in an environment that mirrors the workplace and provides access to the expertise of the Niagara Health System’s healthcare professionals. The NHS, in turn, benefits by having the opportunity to recruit highly-trained graduates. Launched in 2006, the Practical Nursing program is designed to help meet the high demand for Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) across the healthcare system.
The College’s facilities include the former Intensive Care Unit of the NHS Ontario Site (formerly Hotel Dieu hospital), which has been converted to a practical learning lab for the students in both programs. The lab includes patient beds, medical equipment and a nurses’ station. Program offices are also located on the fifth floor, and classrooms are on the first floor. The site is also home to the college’s Contract Training and Continuing Education Health Sciences programs.
