Steptoe was selected in the seventh round (234th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.

He spent his rookie season on the Browns' practice squad. In preseason games before the 2008 season, his performance earned him a roster spot. He made his regular season NFL debut in the Browns Week 1, home-opening 28-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on September 7, 2008. It also happened to be his first career start, as wide receiver Joe Jurevicius had been placed on injured reserve and would miss the entire season, as well Donté Stallworth did not play due to an injury, and wide receiver / kick returner Joshua Cribbs did not play due to a high ankle sprain.[19] Which forced Steptoe into the starting lineup, as well as the role of kickoff and punt returner.

Personal

Steptoe is the son of James and Annette Steptoe of Bryan, Texas. His mother is a nurse’s aide, and his brother, James Jr., also played football at Bryan High School.
