Melisa Cantiveros (born April 6, 1988)[1], also known as Melai or Inday Kengkay, is a Filipino actress and comedienne. She is the 5th female Big Winner of the Pinoy Big Brother franchise.

Early life

Melisa was born on April 6, 1988 at General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines to Dionisio and Virginia Cantiveros[2]. She has a brother named Ondo. As a child, Melisa would often be teased by people as an adopted child because she looks different from her siblings. She just makes fun out of it when people reminds her of this, gaining her good sense of humor. At her college in Mindanao State University, she was elected as the president of the student council after gaining her popularity for being the center of attention.[3] While studying, Melisa also decided to apply as a part-time English teacher at her university.

Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up

On the end of 2009, Melisa decides to audition for being a housemate on the new season of Pinoy Big Brother. She was then selected to be one of the first fifty housemates to be judged. After these auditions, Melisa joins the twenty-six housemates that will enter the house. She was one of the first batch that will enter the newly designed house of Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up, wherein she enters House B.

Upon her stay during the 4th day, Melisa, together with Mariel Sorino, caught Kenny Santos doing his task with his twin Toffi Santos, causing them to fail and to be forcibly evicted later on. On her 6th day, she and Tom Mott were told of the two houses, and were tasked to switch between the two. On her 14th day, she and Princess Manzon were punished due to whispering to each other, and were tasked to dance whenever the song Careless Whisper plays. The next day, she and Tom were told by Big Brother to announce to the other housemates their third weekly task. On the 22nd day, it is revealed that Princess told her about regretting of not nominating Delio Dimaculangan, causing Princess to be automatically nominated and evict herself. In the 30th day, while doing their 4th weekly task, Melisa argues with Delio, causing Delio to threat himself to leave. Two days later, she, Kätlin Laas, and Johan Santos were able to communicate with the Big Brother Finland's 5th season housemates.

On the 48th day, Melisa and Jason Francisco were assigned to practice a song number to be performed on ASAP on the 50th day. The next day, Big Brother introduced a doll to her and Jason, named after their make-believe child, Dengue. The day after this, Dengue went to Melisa, only to be transferred to Jason two days later. On the 54th day, Jason's securing of child custody and apparent failure to take care of the child forced Melisa to appeal the transfer with Rica Paras and Patrick Villanueva as her lawyers. The out-of-court settlement in the Dengue custody trial was held in the confession room on the 57th day, which had a black cloth divider. Both parties agreed to have Melisa take care of Dengue from Monday to Thursday and Jason from Friday to Sunday. Melisa and Jason would also meet in a neutral location for one hour every week, but no physical violence would be allowed. On the 62nd day, Melisa left behind Dengue at the House A anteroom to be picked up by Jason. The next day, after ten housemates were announced as safe, she, Carol Batay, Hermes Bautista, Yuri Okawa, and Rica were asked to stay in House B to await their fate the next day, when the latest evictee would be announced. After this day, the last four housemates entered House A after the latest evictee was announced. To celebrate their reunion as the result of the merge, Melisa and Jason played at the pool. On the 65th day, Melisa discovered a frog in the girls' bedroom, which Jason later released into the pool.

On the 72nd day, Melisa received the 3rd star from the Three Kings (Hermes, Johan, and Paul Jake Castillo), which was experiencing a date with a celebrity. At first, she taught that it was Tado Jimenez, only to learn that it was really Jericho Rosales. The next day, to her surprise, Harish Kumar Singh throws her gifts from Jericho in the trash. At the Christmas ball on the 77th day, she encounters a dance with her onscreen and real-life boyfriend Jason, wherein they were crowned as the King and Queen of the Night. The two also were rewarded a date at the ferris wheel of Star City.

On the 85th day, Melisa escorts the grandmother of Jason for a 100-seond encounter. It was also that day when Melisa expresses guilt over her nomination of Patrick, as none of the people she had ever nominated before were evicted on the same week. Rica and Paul Jake were asked to give Melisa a choice to leave the house in exchange for Patrick getting back in. The plan was actually a practical joke.

On New Year's Eve (90th day), while celebrating, she, Tibo Jumalon, and Kath Ortega were dunked to the pool. Four days later, Tibo was tasked to tell Jason and Melisa about their actions that led to Big Brother's collapse in the first place. The next day, Big Utol had separate drinking sessions with the housemates on a bid to bond with them. As the sessions involved alcohol, Kath, Melisa, and Mariel emerged drunk and had to be sobered up. On the 99th day, Jason and Melisa were told to stay away within three arms length from each other for three days due to them abusing each other. They were further instructed to relay their messages to each other through the three people who would stand between them. Three days later, this was violated due to Melisa going close to Jason in the sala and hitting him as he lies buried under a large pile of balls. This results Big Utol scolding Kath, Hermes, and Tibo. Two days later, actor Coco Martin was allowed inside the house to observe the housemates regarding the restraining order between Jason and Melisa and to report his observations to Big Brother. The restraining order on Melisa and Jason was later lifted.

On the 110th day, the entire Resbak Attack team assaulted House A upon Delio's signal of breaking Melisa and Jason's eggs and destroyed the towers again. Kath and Mariel rebuilt only one tower while Melisa, Jason and Hermes stood aside. Six days later, the first individual challenge took place, involving remarks about certain negative statements from the housemates themselves. Melisa, Tibo, and Paul Jake came out the top three from the game who would compete for one spot in the Big Four. The next day, the second individual challenge involved Melisa, Paul Jake, and Tibo standing on top of one stool placed in the pool. The endurance challenge continued the next day until the wee hours of the morning. Paul Jake fell off his perch while Tibo conceded, putting Melisa into the Big Four. Melisa would remain a nominee and would keep her place in the Big Four if she was saved from eviction; otherwise, Tibo would take over.

On the 121th day, due to the Char-Char Change, Jason started his sacrifice of walking around the pool for 1,053 minutes (around 17 hours) each minute, representing a kilometer between the House and General Santos City, Melisa's home city, so he could formally woo her and make her talk with her ex-boyfriend. He completes this the next day. On the 123rd day, Melisa also had her face-to-face encounter with her ex-boyfriend at House B, in which the two agreed to properly sever their previous relationship and remain friends. After Melisa was summoned back into House A, Jason and the said ex-boyfriend then talked about their situation with Melisa while sharing a bottle of beer.

Five days before the Big Date On The Big Night, during the early hours, Jason, wanting to continue to woo Melisa, serenaded her by singing Can't Take My Eyes Off You, completed with a marching band, and told his feelings to her.[4]

Big Date on the Big Night

The finale of the season, dubbed Big Date on the Big Night, was held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.[5] As the finale was held a day before Valentine's Day, the show was partly given a Valentine/prom night theme. References to the Chinese zodiac and anything Chinese also abounded as the show was also on the eve of Chinese New Year.

Melisa, who amassed 1,226,675 votes or 32.08% of the entire vote since it began on Day 120, won the season. Leaving before her were Paul Jake (1,044,275 votes or 27.31%), Jason (954,961 votes or 24.97%), Johan (303,751 votes or 7.94%), and Tibo (294,261 votes or 7.69%). [6]

Filmography

After leaving the house of Pinoy Big Brother: Double Up, Melisa initially became a guest in several talk shows like The Buzz, SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon, and Entertainment Live, and variety shows like ASAP. She and her real-life and onscreen boyfriend Jason Francisco will star in their very first realiserye entitled Melason In Love that will premier on February 22.[7]
