Stow-Munroe Falls High School (abbreviated SMFHS) — often referred to by its original name, Stow High School (SHS)[6] — is a public high school located in Stow, Ohio, a suburb of Akron in Northeast Ohio. With an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students, it is the only high school in the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District.

History

Stow High School first opened in 1907 within the new, centralized school building at the northwest corner of Hudson and Graham Roads in Stow;[1] the high school’s first graduating class was in 1909.[1][7] In 1924, Stow High School moved to a second new building at the southwest corner of Darrow and Graham Roads (this same building was renamed in 1968 for Velma Workman, who retired in 1967 after teaching in the Stow schools for thirty-seven years).[7]

The high school moved yet again in 1964 to a third structure, the Lakeview building at 1819 Graham Road.[7] In 1972, students were split due to overcrowding: grades 9 and 10 were sent back to the old Workman building, while grades 11 and 12 remained at Lakeview.[7] Finally, in 1987, the high school moved to its current location at 3227 East Graham Road.[8] Following this last move, the school officially changed its name to Stow-Munroe Falls High School.[8]

SMFHS recently celebrated its 101st graduating class; commencement was again held at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, the traditional venue.[9]

Academics

Stow-Munroe Falls High School offers a broad curriculum designed for students with varying strengths and interests, from college preparatory to intensive career-technical. College bound students opting for a more rigorous schedule may select from eleven Advanced Placement (AP) courses: English Literature, Statistics, Calculus, Music Theory, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, U.S. History and U.S. Government.[5]

The high school is also part of the Six District Educational Compact, a joint program of six area school districts (Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Kent, Stow-Munroe Falls, Tallmadge and Woodridge) to share access to each of their vocational training facilities and career resources.[10]

Activities

The high school offers numerous clubs, activities and programs for students to participate in beyond the classroom: AFS Intercultural Programs; American Civics Center (ACC); Business Professionals of America (BPA); Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Class Executive Committees; Chess Club; Cooperative Business Education (CBE); DECA; Environmentally Concerned Students (ECS); Foreign Language clubs including French, German, Japanese and Spanish; Interact of Rotary International; Key Club; National Honor Society (NHS); Photography Club; Quill and Scroll; Ski Club; Spectrum, a literary and creative arts magazine; Stoanno, the school yearbook; Stohion, the school newspaper; Stow Student News (television broadcast news); SADD; Student Council; Teambackers; and Work Study Club.[5][11]

Theater

In addition to offering a Drama Club, Stow-Munroe Falls High School presents several theatrical productions each year: a one-act play festival, the Junior and Senior Class Plays (drama and comedy, respectively), murder mysteries, a children’s theater and the All-School Musical. Theater participants may also qualify for induction into the International Thespian Society (ITS).[5]

Music

Nationally recognized in 2009 and again in 2010 by the NAMM Foundation,[12] the high school offers a variety of opportunities for students to participate in both vocal and instrumental music. Among these are the school orchestra, choir and band programs; Madrigals, an a cappella group; and the Notables show choir.[5]

Bands

With more than 250 students participating for the 2009-10 school year,[13] the band program is the largest organization at Stow-Munroe Falls High School.[14] The Bulldog Marching Band performs during football games in the fall, and at season's end, band members are placed into one of four concert bands: the Wind Ensemble, the Gold Symphonic Band, the Maroon Symphonic Band or the Freshmen Concert Band. Additionally, a Jazz Band Program consisting of two jazz bands — Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 — is offered as an extracurricular activity.[5] SMFHS bands and band members also regularly compete at Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) adjudicated events, often receiving superior ratings.[14][15]

The Bulldog Marching Band has twice performed at — and won the AAA-class competition of — the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida (Dec. 1991, Jan. 1996).[16] In 2000, the Wind Ensemble performed for the OMEA State Professional Convention, one of three high school bands selected out of 200 statewide through a blind audition.[17]

Academic teams

Stow-Munroe Falls High School is home to several academic teams:[5] a Science Olympiad team; an Ohio Math League team; an Academic Challenge team; a Speech and Debate team, member of both the Ohio High School Speech League (OHSSL)[18][19] and the National Forensic League (NFL);[18][19] and the Stow Latin Club, a local chapter of both the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL)[20] and the National Junior Classical League (NJCL).[21]

Academic Challenge

The Stow-Munroe Falls High School Academic Challenge team is the school's quizbowl team, actively competing in Academic Challenge (Ohio),[22] National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) and the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE). During the 2008-09 school year, Stow-Munroe Falls achieved success at multiple events: the team placed 4th in the state[23] and tied for 27th nationally[24] as part of the NAQT competition; the team's leading scorer ranked 1st individually at the national level (also NAQT);[25] and Stow-Munroe Falls placed 6th at the 2009 PACE National Scholastics Championship (NSC).[26]

Speech and Debate

The Stow-Munroe Falls High School Speech and Debate team competes in the Eastern Ohio district of the NFL and the Akron District of the OHSSL.[18] The team has won state titles in 4-Person Policy Debate (1994, 1998),[18] Lincoln-Douglas Debate (2001)[18] and Public Forum Debate (2009),[27] and in 1999, the team collectively finished 6th out of all schools in Ohio.[18] Since 1994, Stow has sent eleven students to the National Tournament — four alone in 2007.[18]

Latin Club

The Stow Latin Club — once considered a "powerhouse" at competitions[28] — has consistently excelled at the annual State Convention of the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL), winning 28 consecutive state titles (Overall Sweepstakes) from 1979-2006.[29] Stow's Certamen teams have also won multiple state titles: Level I (1993, 1994, 1995);[30] Level II (1994, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2006);[30] and Advanced/Upper Level (1993, 1997, 2006).[30]

Additionally, club members have frequently competed at the NJCL National Convention.[31]
