The Charlie and Lola series of books have been adapted by Tiger Aspect into an animated cartoon television series, using a collage style of animation which accurately captures the style of the original books. 2D cel animation, paper cutout, fabric design, real textures, photomontage, and archive footage are all employed and subsequently animated in a software application called CelAction.[1] The cartoons are also notable for their use of children voices, rather than adult voice actors, a technique pioneered by the Peanuts television specials. Both the books and the cartoon also mirror Peanuts, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and Sammy's Story Shop's technique of never showing adults, saved for the exception of one episode, where a child's mom is shown.

The first television series of 26 episodes (11 minutes each) was commissioned by Michael Carrington at the BBC and first broadcast on 7 November 2005.[2] The second series of 26 episodes (again, 11 minutes each) started broadcasting on CBeebies on 2 October 2006 (with the morning broadcast also being shown on BBC Two) a third series followed. In the television series, Charlie is seven and Lola is four, and goes to school (her teacher is called Mrs. Hansen). In episodes of both the first and second series, Charlie celebrates his birthday (in "It's a Secret..." and "This Is Actually My Party"), although this doesn't seem to affect his age in other episodes.

The series has been aired in the following countries:

TV sales have been agreed with the following international broadcasters TF1 (France), KRO (Holland), VRT (Belgium), NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and 356 Media (Iceland)

In some countries, the episodes are packaged as double bills. In Germany, the episodes are shown on their own on the children's channel KI.KA but also included in the long-running show Die Sendung mit der Maus (The Show with the Mouse) on KI.KA and ARD.

The series has been dubbed into Gaelic and is regularly shown on BBC Two Scotland during the morning. It goes by Charlie is Lola.

She hops to bed so the sea-ticklers won't tickle her, sleeps tightly so the bed bugs won't bite, washes really hard behind her ears so mushrooms won't grow there, and turns around three times when she sees a magpie. Charlie quickly regrets it when he tells her not to step on the cracks in the pavement, or else the bears that live underneath will get her. Six

  • Series Three began airing on the UK digital channel CBeebies in 16:9 aspect from 26 November 2007 to 12 December 2007.
  • It appears that the series will continue from 4 April 2008 on CBeebies; however, the schedule seems to be limited to a new episode every Friday evening at 18:15, not every day, as the run of episodes is interspersed with ones from other series.
  • Episodes in Series Three include a 30-second title, 10 minutes of content and 15 seconds of credits exactly.

DVD releases

In 2006, Warner Home Video, along with BBC DVD, released many volumes of the series onto DVD in the USA. The finished product was Charlie and Lola: Absolutely Every Volume Ever. Volume 3 contained a special "Snap" interactive card game in which, if you win, you unlock a DVD-ROM to print out Snap cards yourself. Alongside that, a few volumes are:
