"Te Amo"
Song

"Te Amo" is a song performed by Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna. It is written by Mikkel S. Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, James Fauntleroy II and Rihanna and produced by StarGate. Lyrically the song speaks of Rihanna's struggles to deal with being the object of a woman's desires. Te Amo is Latin, Spanish or Portuguese for 'I love you', but it has also been rumored to be a play on words with the Spanish for fear 'Temo' and reflects on her previous relationship. It serves as the third international (Released outside of the US and Canada) and fifth and final overall single from her fourth album Rated R.[2][3][4] It was performed live on May 22, 2010, at the BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend Music Festival.[5]

Critical reception

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy awarded the song four out of five stars stating that "After the rather explicit 'Rude Boy' campaign, Rihanna's taking a well-deserved break from titillating the blokes here - only to find herself the object of another lady's affections. One of her Rated R LP's less menacing moments, 'Te Amo' finds La Fenty grappling with her sexuality over some irresistible, Latin-infused Stargate beats."[6] Fraser McAlpine of Daily Reviews also awarded the song four out of five stars and stated "It’s that old, old story: Girl meets girl. Girl speaks different language to girl. Girl loves girl. Girl doesn’t love girl. Girl sad. We’ve all been there, right? And Rihanna’s captured that feeling beautifully (she actually has, even though I sound incredibly insincere about it)."[7]

Chart performance

In December 2009, "Te Amo" made its first chart appearance on the Swedish Singles Chart at number fifty-two[8] shortly after Rated R was released. Upon announcement as a single, the song debuted on the UK Singles Chart at number 94 and 29 on the UK R&B Chart on April 19, 2010. It eventually peaked at number 14 on the singles chart and five on the R&B chart.[9][10] In Australia, it debuted at number 35 and peaked at 22. In Ireland, it debuted at number 41 and peaked at 16. It also debuted at number 47 on the Swiss Singles Chart and peaked inside the top ten at number nine.[11] On the European Hot 100, "Te Amo" debuted at number 48 for the week of May 29, 2010 and peaked at 18.[12] It made its debut on the Canadian Hot 100 for the week ending July 3, 2010 at number 98 despite not being officially released there or in the United States.[13] It peaked at number 66. The song finally entered the Finnish Singles Chart at number 14 on August 12, 2010.[14] In Germany, the song is Rihanna's first single not to reach the top ten since "Hate That I Love You".[15] It debuted at number thirteen and reached it a peak of eleven in its 5th week on the German Singles Chart.[16]

Music video

File:Rihanna te amo video.jpg
Rihanna opposite Laetitia Casta in the video.

The video was shot on April 29, 2010 and April 30, 2010 in Vigny, France[17] in the Château de Vigny. On the set photos were released showing Rihanna in a colourful Mara Hoffman maxi dress costing $1,058. French model, Laetitia Casta plays a femme fatale in the video.[18] The video premiered on May 28, 2010.[19] Billboard's music video writer, Monica Herrera spoke of the video saying, "Rihanna saved a far sexier clip than 'Rockstar 101' for fans abroad" She described the videos various scenes as "Rihanna getting frisky in a bedroom and setting a fire with a sultry female companion."[20] The video was directed by Rihanna's long-time director, Anthony Mandler.[21]

In the video, Rihanna plays Casta's lesbian love interest. Casta arrives at the castle in a car, steps out with a very provocative outfit, and meets Rihanna inside. Throughout all of the video, Casta tries to seduce Rihanna and whilst Rihanna initially resists, eventually she gives in to Casta's charms. First, she meets Rihanna in the living room and catches her eye. In the next scene, the couple are shown on top of a table with ultraviolet lighting and Casta rubs her head on Rihanna's legs, They are then shown outside the castle and Rihanna falls to the ground in despair while Casta looks on. Soon, they're shown in a room full of male dancers and Rihanna begins to feel more comfortable around her admirer. The last two scenes are Rihanna and Casta in PVC bondage outfits making out on a bed in a darkened room, and then at a burning table, looking away from each other.
