Harmondsworth is a village in the London Borough of Hillingdon, close to London Heathrow Airport. The village is situated south of West Drayton. Harmondsworth was mentioned in the Domesday Book, its name coming from the Anglo-Saxon Heremōdes worþ, meaning "Heremōd's enclosure". Notable features of the village are the church of St Mary, with parts dating from the 12th century,[1] and Britain's largest tithe barn, made entirely without nails.[2]
Government
Local government
Harmondsworth was a civil parish, in Staines Rural District between 1894 and 1930, when it transferred to Yiewsley and West Drayton Urban District. The parish, which also contained Sipson, Longford, Heathrow and Perry Oaks,[3] was merged with Yiewsley and West Drayton in 1949.[4] In another reorganisation of local government, the village was transferred to the London Borough of Hillingdon, in Greater London, when Middlesex was abolished in 1965. It is currently in the Heathrow Villages ward, which elects three councillors on Hillingdon Council.[5]
United Kingdom government
The UK Border Agency has two immigration removal centres, Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre and Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre in Harmondsworth.[6][7]
