Ready (Hindi: रेडी, Reḍī) is a 2011 Indian comedy film directed by Anees Bazmee,[4] starring Salman Khan and Asin in the lead roles.[5][6][7] It also features Paresh Rawal, Arya Babbar and Mahesh Manjrekar in supporting roles,[8] while Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Kangana Ranaut, Zarine Khan and Arbaaz Khan make cameo appearances. The film is a remake of the 2008 Telugu film Ready directed by Sreenu Vaitla starring Ram and Genelia.[9] The music is given by Pritam. The first look of the film was unveiled on 5 April 2011, while the theatrical trailer was released on 15 April 2011.[10] The film was released on 3 June 2011.[1] Upon release, Ready became the second highest opening day grosser, as well as the second highest weekend grossing Bollywood film, after Dabangg.[11]

Plot

Prem Kapoor (Salman Khan) and his family are proceeding a marriage for their neighbors daughter Khushi (Zarine Khan). She was going to marry Gaurav (Arbaaz Khan ), instead she runs away with Prem to marry her true love Raju (Ajay Devgn). Then Sanjana (Asin). Prem is sent to the airport to pick up his future wife, but Prem being Prem, he waits at the wrong terminal so he can make excuses to his family that she never showed up. However, Sanjana is on the runaway from her mafioso family who are forcefully getting her married. Her family are two duelling uncles trying to get her married to either of the two brother-in-laws because of the assets she inherited from her parents who have passed away. She overhears Prem's plan and pretends to be Pooja (which Prem does not know since he has never seen the real Pooja). Eventually Prem finds out but till then he has fallen in love with Sanjana and hides that she is not the real Pooja from his family. Later on, his family gets to know of this and is scared since her family is from a mafia background. Prem concocts a plan to better Sanjana's family and make the dueling uncles get along. Prem's family supports him and plays characters to trick Sanjana's family. Due to all of this planning and confusion, the film is filled with laughter.

Cast

Production

The film was originally to be shot in Mauritius.[13] However on the request of Salman Khan, the location was changed to Sri Lanka.[13] Khan described his decision to choose Sri Lanka as its close proximity to India and its suitable landscape for Indian productions.[12]

The film's shooting started on 20 June 2010 in Colombo.[14][15] The first schedule of shooting lasted for over 27 days at locations in Colombo and the neighboring Bentota,[15] during which approximately 40% of the filming was completed.[16] The second schedule of shooting was slated to start in October 2010, but was delayed due to eye problems faced by Salman Khan. The lead actor requested Anees Bazmee to delay the shoot until the condition of his eye improves.[17] The shooting started again in Mumbai from November 3, 2010.[18] Portions of the film were shot at Film City in Mumbai and Cherish Studios at Madh Island in the North of Mumbai.[19] During filming, media reports emerged that Asin had shot for an intimate scene for the film,[20] though the reports were later denied by the actress.[21]

The final schedule of shooting started in February 2011 in Bangkok.[22] According to reports, actors Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt and Kangna Ranaut, who were shooting in Bangkok for David Dhawan's film, Rascals were called by Salman Khan to become part of the movie. The trio shot for a day and will be seen doing cameo appearances in the film.[23] Arbaaz Khan and Zarine Khan were also confirmed to have shot for small cameos in the film.[24] The final schedule of shooting was completed in March 2011.[25] Two songs from the film, "Character Dheela" and "Dhinka Chika", which were filmed in Bangkok were re-shot in Mumbai's Film City studios. According to producer Bhushan Kumar, "the whole [production] team felt that the visuals didn't suit the song."[26] The song "Character Dheela", which features Salman Khan and Zarine Khan in a cameo appearance, is a tribute to veteran actors Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dharmendra.[27]

Release

The film’s release date was first set as 27 May[8][28] but was later pushed back to 3 June.[1] The theatrical rights of the film for the Indian and overseas markets were sold for a sum of ₹ 55 crore.[29] Advance bookings were opened on 29 May (five days prior to release) in several multiplexes.[30] It became the first Indian film to release on at least 1000 UFO digital prints and almost 1900 prints in all.[31] The advance at single screens matched that of Dabangg and even bettered it at places.[32] The world première of the film took place at Grand Cineplex, Dubai on 1 June 2011.[33]

Reception

Critical response

The film has received mixed reviews from critics. Gaurav Malani of the Times of India gave a favourable review, particularly praising the performance of Salman Khan: "Salman Khan looks suave, has smashing screen presence and seems in his comfort zone employing his standard set of dancing, acting and action skills. Quite unusual of him, he underplays his role in the second half and does a decent job at it .... If you are still ready to not see beyond Salman Khan in the film, Ready is the film for you!"[34] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama awarded the movie four stars out of five saying, "On the whole, Ready is strictly for the masses and for those who relish typically formulaic masala entertainers. The film prides itself with super music ['Character Dheela' and 'Dhinka Chika'], gags and gimmicks aplenty and of course, Salman Khan, the beloved of the masses and the mainstay of this film. If you hero-worship Salman, you cannot afford to miss this one."[35] Filmfare also awarded the movie four stars out of five, while commenting, "When it comes to a Salman Khan or a Rajnikant film, their performance is not important. It’s the audience performance that counts... It doesn’t matter how Ready is critiqued, dissected, trashed or praised in the hallowed portals of India’s review and critic world, the verdict is already out."[36] Komal Nahta of Koimoi.com gave it a rating of three and a half stars and stated, "Ready will score at the box-office, thanks to a great start, super-hit music, Salman Khan and entertainment in a good dose."[37] Anupama Chopra of NDTV Movies awarded two stars while commenting, "Thankfully, Ready isn’t in the same soul-sucking category as director Anees Bazmee’s last two movies: Thank You and No Problem. But it still falls very much into his special brand of brain-dead, anything-for-a-laugh comedy."[38] Raja Sen of Rediff.com awarded the film one and a half stars saying, "Ready doesn't even try to make sense and therefore falls flat.....only it's more extortionate than value for money."[39] Sonia Chopra of Sify awarded two and a half stars while commenting, "The film is unabashedly Salman-centric. He’s doing it all: the wise-cracks, gregarious dancing, beating the bad guys, and romancing the girl. All this with his characteristic drawl and swagger. Fans of Salman are likely to be happy even with this rehashed version of a typical Salman film."[40] Kunal Guha of Yahoo! Movies gave the movie one star and stated, "...the movie refuses to end, as unnecessary confusions and complications pile up and you wonder if there's enough reel left to clear it all up. Luckily, your prayers are answered as this movie ends like a school play, with the dim-witted criminals realizing they've wronged and swearing to mend their ways... When you exit this film, there will be little you will take away from it, apart from Salman's pocket-fiddling and bum rubbing dance moves."[41] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN awarded the movie 1.5 stars out of 5, commenting "'Ready' is strictly for die-hard Salman Khan fans (are there any other kind?) who're willing to forgive the fact that this tasteless, senseless film has no plot to speak of, yet lazily unfolds over two hours and thirty minutes... I'm going with a generous one-and-a-half out of five for director Anees Bazmee's 'Ready'. Salman Khan deserves better than this."[42]

Khaleej Times awarded the film 3 stars commenting, "Bazmi’s script, a shoot off of a Telugu hit, accommodates more characters than Goa during the tourist season. Every character is over-dressed and over-the-top. Then men are constantly looking for reasons to say goofy corny things to one another. That’s the required mood of this “panga-‘mirth’-lena” comedy with an attitude that stretches from one end of the lengthy narration to the other with hardly a break for the plot to gather together its thoughts."[43] Mayank Shekhar of Hindustan Times gave 2 stars stating, "Salman's re-grounded masala (Wanted, Dabanng) is still novel for the time being. He walks into Gaiety to briefly say hi to his audiences... It's a pop-cultural experience all right, and fully worth it. Unfortunately, there's also an entire film to sit through."[44] Shubha Shetty-Saha of MiD DAY rated it 1/2 saying, "The best thing about the movie, of course is Salman Khan. His fans will not be disappointed and yes, they will get to see him topless in the climax."[45] Shalini Saksena of The Pioneer rated the film 6/10 saying, "Believe it or not but Salman Khan is on a roll. After the success of films like Wanted and Dabangg, he is ready with Ready which has his stamp all over it... Director Anees Bazmee makes sure that the audience gets full entertainment. In fact there is hardly any time to ponder on the other aspect of the film but what is unfolding on the screen. Though there is nothing spectacular about the storyline, it manages to make you laugh."[46]

Box office

India

In India, Ready opened to an overwhelming response at the box office and packed cinema halls with single screens reporting nearly 95-100% occupancy,[47] while multiplexes reported 60% to 100% occupancy, depending on session times.[48] The film collected ₹13 crore (US$1.6 million) nett on its first day of business, thus becoming the second highest opening day grosser across India after Dabangg.[49] On its second day of business, it went on to collect ₹12.37 crore (US$1.5 million), therefore taking the two days nett total to ₹25.37 crore (US$3.0 million).[50] The opening weekend collections of the film have been around ₹42.25 crore (US$5.1 million) nett, making it the second highest opening weekend ever as well as the biggest non-holiday weekend ever.[51] The film shown steady collections on Monday with more than ₹7 crore (US$840,000) nett,[52] and tuesday with around ₹6.5 crore (US$780,000) nett, taking the first week nett to ₹69.50 crore (US$8.3 million) nett.[53] The film collected ₹20 crore (US$2.4 million) nett over its second weekend, taking the ten days total revenue to ₹89.75 crore (US$11 million) nett.[54]

Overseas

In the overseas market, the film went on to collect ₹8 crore (US$960,000) from US, UK, UAE and other foreign markets over the opening weekend.[11]

Soundtrack

The music of the film is composed by Pritam while the lyrics are penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, Ashish Pandit, Neelesh Misra and Kumaar. It was launched on 25 April 2011 at Filmcity, Goregoan, under the banner of T-Series.[55] The album contains four original tracks and four remixes.[56] The item song "Ringa Ringa" from the Telugu movie Arya 2 was tweaked and composed for the film by its original composer, Devi Sri Prasad. The song underwent changes to suit the nativity of North India, an example being the change of "Ringa Ringa" to "Dhinka Chika".[57] Composer Anu Malik alleged that the song "Character Dheela" is an unauthorized copy of his "Mohabaat Naam Hai" from the 2001 film Ajnabee. He told the media that he will likely file a suit against Pritam for plagiarism.[58] Mere Adha Bhi has elements of Mere Laung Gawaacha by Musarrat Nazir in the song, specifically the background music had the verse saying and in dancing areas, excluding the chorus.

Reception

Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama rated the album favourably, awarding it four stars out of five, stating "with only four songs in the album, one longs to lay hands on a lot more. Nonetheless, from what is made available, there are good enough reasons to celebrate with "Dhinka Chika" and "Character Dheela" all set to be not just huge hits musically but also turn out to be massive crowd pullers. On the other hand 'Meri Ada Bhi' ends up adding good variety to the album with 'Humko Pyar Hua' carrying a potential to gather steam once the film releases.[59] Sukanya Verma of Rediff while giving it two and a half stars out of five saying "Ready isn't a song-heavy album despite a ditzy remixed counterpart for each. Nor is it a game changer. Still, it's got at least two potential mass favourites, complementing its leading man's stylish, crowd-pleasing personality, to offer. And that ought to be good enough for Ready to hit steady and go."[60] Shivesh Kumar of IndiaWeekly awarded the album 4 out of 5 stars.[61] Gurpreet Bhuller of Moviehattan.com awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars, picking "Dhinka Chika" and "Character Dheela" as his favourites.[62] Musicperk.com rated the album at 4 out of 5 stars.[63] On 12 May 2011, the songs "Character Dheela" and "Dhinka Chika" reached the top two positions on the music popularity charts compiled by the media research company Heartbeat.[64]
