Operation Moonfall (操作の降月, Sōsa no Kuratsuki, literally Moonfall of Operating) is a fan campaign meant to persuade Nintendo to remake the Nintendo 64 classic Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the 3DS console. It was launched in response to Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma's statement that a remake of Majora's Mask is not an impossibility "if there's enough demand for it"[1] and is based upon the widely influential Operation Rainfall. It was launched on July 25, 2011 and is currently ongoing.

Background

The original Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 64 is the sixth installment in The Legend of Zelda series and the second using 3D graphics, the first being The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the game's predecessor. The game is set in Termina, an alternate version of the usual series setting of Hyrule, where the Skull Kid has stolen Majora's Mask, a powerful ancient artifact. Under its influence, the Skull Kid causes the land's moon to slowly fall towards Termina, where it crashes after three days. The main protagonist Link repeatedly travels back in time to the beginning of the three days to find a way to stop the moon from destroying Clock Town.

Earlier in the year, Nintendo released a remake of Ocarina of Time for the 3DS. This remake, boasting new 3D graphics on an improved engine quickly became the second game to break a million units on the 3DS.[2] After its release, focus began shifting on Majora's Mask, the sequel to the original game. In an interview with the August edition of Nintendo Power, Eiji Aonuma, one of the main producers at Nintendo, has stated in relation to Ocarina of Time 3DS, "I think certainly if there was a similar output of emotion and clamor from fans for a remake of Majora’s Mask, it wouldn’t be an utter impossibility". Operation Moonfall was officially launched on July 25 after a response to Aonuma's statement by a coalition of several large Legend of Zelda fansites, including ZeldaUniverse and ZeldaInformer.[3][4]

Concept

The campaign includes sending as many physical letters and e-mails as well as giving as many phone calls to Nintendo or Nintendo of America's headquarters as possible, in addition to posting messages on the branch's Facebook and Twitter accounts, requesting for a remake of the game. A petition to remake the game has reached 10,000 signatures in only 5 days.[5]

Coverage

Operation Rainfall has thus far failed to get The Last Story and pals localized for the West, but a new group has appropriated the name and plans for a potentially more achievable goal. The brilliantly named Operation Moonfall is a bid to get Majora's Mask on 3DS, and that's a cause we can all believe in!

— Jim Sterling, Destructoid[6]

Operation Moonfall has been covered by IGN,[7] Destructoid,[8] and the Spanish gaming site eGamers.[9] Nintendo themselves has taken notice of the fan support of the Majora's Mask remake, stating, "At the risk of dampening the excitement you feel, I must be clear that no official announcements have been made regarding a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for the Nintendo 3DS. However, we like hearing what our consumers find important.".[10]
