"Why This Kolaveri Di"
Song

Why this Kolaveri Di (Tamil: வொய் திஸ் கொலவெறி டி; English: Why this murderous rage, girl?) is a song from the upcoming Tamil movie 3, due to be released in 2012, composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The song is penned and sung by popular Tamil movie star Dhanush.[1] A promo of this song was released on YouTube[2] on 16th November 2011, and it instantly became viral on social networking sites for its quirky "Tanglish" (Tamil–English) lyrics.[3][4] Soon, the song became the most searched video in YouTube.[5]

Background

According to composer Anirudh Ravichander, the director of the movie, Aishwarya Dhanush demanded a light-hearted fun song about love failure. He had came up with a tune in ten minutes. Anirudh further recalled that, he was not aware of what mood Dhanush was in, for he [Dhanush] started singing in broken English and came up with this in 20 minutes.[6]

As Dhanush says, it’s a song fit for bathroom singers. Its simple beats make it more catchy. Dhanush’s description of heartbreak through Kolaveri di is extremely funny. Heartbreak is a phenomenon almost everyone can relate to. The song was initially leaked to the internet, and the makers, having noticed its popularity, decided to go for an official release.[7]

Lyrics

The lyrics of this song is rather simple and is written in the easiest form of Tanglish, a mixture of Tamil and English. The lyrics portray the feelings of an average Indian boy, who has failed in love, or who has some problems with his girl. The song starts as mentioned below:

"Yo boys I am sing song, soup song, flop song. Why this Kolaveri Kolaveri Kolaveri Di, Why this Kolaveri Kolaveri Kolaveri Di."
