The issue of Human rights in Tunisia, a nation of 10,732,900 people in North Africa,[1] is complex. In its 2011 Freedom in the World report, Freedom House declared the country "Not Free".[2] This situation may change in the aftermath of a recent regime change.
Historical situation
The authorities maintained tight restrictions on freedom of expression, association and assembly, and government critics continued to be harassed, threatened and imprisoned. Former political prisoners were also harassed, intimidated and subject to restrictions. Torture and other ill-treatment in police stations and prisons were reported. People prosecuted under the anti-terrorism law were sentenced to long prison terms after unfair trials. Death sentences continued to be imposed, but the government maintained a moratorium on executions.[3]
The following is a chart of Tunisia's ratings since 1972 in the Freedom in the World reports, published annually by Freedom House. A rating of 1 is "free"; 7, "not free".[4]
