Clara first appeared in ''[[Asylum of the Daleks]]'' as "'''Oswin Oswald'''" where she was turned into a [[Dalek]] and subsequently self-destructed in order to save [[The Doctor (Doctor Who)|the Doctor]], [[Amy Pond|Amy]] and [[Rory Williams|Rory]] by giving them a chance to escape the prison.


She next appeared in the 2012 Christmas special, ''[[The Snowmen]]'', where she leads a double-life working as both a governess to a wealthy family, in which she sports an upper-class accent, as well as a barmaid, in which she sports a working-class one. She comes across the Doctor on her break and accosts the Doctor's cab out of curiosity. Snowmen soon begin to pop up around them, but the Doctor soon realises that the snow is feeding off her thoughts telepathically and tells her to visualise their melting, which she does, resulting in their destruction. He then suggests that her memories be wiped, so that she won't look for him after he leaves and can avoid becoming further "involved". After she points out that it is imperative that she keep her memories in order to avoid being attacked by snowmen again, she is allowed to go free, on the condition that she not seek out the Doctor. She, of course, almost immediately breaks this rule and follows him further, discovering the [[Tardis]] in the clouds before returning to the house of her employer. The next day she attempts to find the Tardis again, but fails. Fortunately, she comes across Vastra and Jenny (from ''[[A Good Man Goes to War]]'') and is interrogated strangely, in which she is only allowed to answer in single words, and eventually able to plead for help and pass on a message to the Doctor in the form of the single word "Pond". This moves him to help her and together, they defeat the snowmen, though she falls from the Tardis and is killed in the effort, after the Doctor presents her with a Tardis key. At her funeral, the Doctor sees her full name on the tombstone, Clara Oswin Oswald, the same name as the girl who helped them in Asylum of the Daleks. The Doctor is convinced that this is impossible and becomes obsessed with finding her. In the present day, Jenna-Louise Coleman is seen walking through the same graveyard, stopping in front of her own grave.
