A presidential election will be held on February 18, 2013 in Armenia.
Background
None of the 4 major opposition parties that participated in the 6 May parliamentary election recognized its legitimacy.
On December 12, 2012, Prosperous Armenia, the second largest party in the parliament, announced that it will not have a candidate in the election and will not support any other candidate.[1]
On December 15, 2012, the Republican Party officially nominated Serzh Sargsyan as the party candidate.[2]
On December 25, 2012, Armenia's first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan announced that he will not participate in the upcoming election, thought it was initially announced that Ter-Petrosyan will be Armenian National Congress candidate. LTP ended second in the 2008 election with 21.5%. In May 2012 ANC speaker Levon Zurabyan said that they don't have a better candidate for presidency than Ter-Petrosyan.[3]
On December 26, 2012, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation announced their decision not to nominate a candidate.[4]
Potential candidates
The deadline to register as a presidential candidate is January 4, 2013.[5]
So far, the following candidates have been nominated or announced that they would run for the office:
- Serzh Sargsyan, the incumbent President elected in the disputed 2008 election with 52.3%. Leader of ruling Republican Party.
- Raffi Hovannisian, first Foreign Minister of Armenia (1991-1992), leader of the Heritage party.[6][7]
- Paruyr Hayrikyan, leader of the Union for National Self-Determination party.[8]
- Hrant Bagratyan, leader of Freedom party, 1993-1996 Prime Minister of Armenia[7]
- Andreas Ghukasyan, a political analyst, Radio Hay director [7][9][10]
- Vardan Sedrakyan, an epic poetry expert[11]
- Arman Melikyan, candidate in the 2008 presidential election
- Aram Harutyunyan, leader of the National Conciliation Party
Campaign
The campaign will start on January 21, 2013 and will end on February 16. February 17 is an election silence day.
On January 31, 2013, just before midnight, Presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan was shot in his right clavicle.[12]
