"Numb"
Song

"Numb" is a song recorded by Barbadian recording artist Rihanna for her seventh studio album Unapologetic (2012). It features guest vocals by Eminem, making it the pair's third collaboration since the two versions of Love the Way You Lie. Following the album's release, "Numb" charted on multiple charts worldwide including in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Background

Rihanna began "working on the new sound" for her seventh studio album in March 2012, even though she had not yet begun recording.[2] On September 12, 2012, Def Jam France announced via Twitter that Rihanna would release a new single the upcoming week while her seventh studio album is scheduled to be released in November 2012. However, the tweet was shortly deleted and replaced with another clarifying that "more information will be made available tomorrow, Thursday, September 13".[3] Right after her performance at the iHeartRadio music festival in September 2012, Rihanna revealed that her single "Diamonds" would be released the same month.[4] Via her official Twitter account, Rihanna posted series of "teasing" tweets announcing her seventh studio album.[5] On October 11, 2012, in one of her tweets revealed that the title of her new album is Unapologetic.[6]

Composition and lyrical interpretation

"Numb" lasts for a duration of 3:25.[7] The song's instrumentation consists of an Egyptian flute riff and "a crashing bombastic beat."[8] "Numb" contains a sample of Kanye West's song "Can't Tell Me Nothing", written by West and Aldrin Davis.[8] The lyric "Let the champagne smash/ Let that man get cash" from "Can't Tell Me Nothing" is the sample used in "Numb".[8] The song's lyrical content is "controversial" as it is about feeling "numb after taking drugs." and a "homage to getting high."[8] Rihanna performs the lines "Ecstasy in the air/ I don't care/ Can't tell me nothing/ I'm impaired/ The worst for wear" in the first Verse.[8] Eminem "spits" his verse, performing the lines "Yeah, yeah, yeah, come here dear/ Trying to get closer to you/ I'm motioning you to pull over boo/ I'm the siren that you hear/ I'm the butt police, and I'm looking at your rear, rear, rear."[8]

Chart performance

Upon the release of Unapologetic, "Numb" charted in several territories due to strong digital downloads. On November 25, 2012, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 92,[9] and the UK R&B Chart at number 13.[10] It also debuted at number 99 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart.[11] In the United States, the song debuted at number 42 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[12] It also debuted at number 14 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs chart,[13] and at number 16 on the US R&B Songs chart.[14]
