Incorrect 4im Warning
Hello Oldag,
I noticed you have incorrectly used a 4im warning for a good-faith edit from an IP. Please explain why you have done so. by Kevin12cd Talk to me This was posted at 22:59, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I guess I didn't assume good faith considering his previous edits. Oldag07 (talk) 23:19, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I have to concur, that does not seem like a "good faith" edit...like this one: pooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppooppoop... Buffs (talk) 14:07, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Essentially, it's not just the application that was incorrect, it was the usage of the warning that was incorrect. The IP has recieved several warnings before. Also, please explain why you believe the edit was unconstructive. Cheers!
by Kevin12cd Talk to me This was posted at 15:51, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Honestly, I don't know why the edit was bad. I just don't trust the user and I didn't want what had a high probability of being vandalism to stay on those pages. Oldag07 (talk) 02:41, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Okay. Next time, please confirm that the edit was indeed unconstructive. Cheers!

Ship class articles and italics
Please go through all of the ship class articles that you are blithely adding italics to and make sure that you're doing it right. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships) for the correct and incorrect usage of italics. In a nutshell, classes named for a member of the class have italicized titles; all others are no italicized. Please fix those that you have broken.
—Trappist the monk (talk) 04:04, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- It is correct. Oldag07 (talk) 04:08, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- What does that mean? it is correct? You italicized Borei-class submarine which should not have been italicized; you italicized Bay-class minesweeper which should not have been italicized. There are probably others. I repeat my request: Please fix those that you have broken.
- There are close to 1700 "class" articles that do not have proper titles. I really don't know anything about these ships, nor am I going to look up if each class is named after a ship of that particular class. I will stop making edits to see if I can fix my editing process, but there are going to be some classes that I am simply going to miss. Oldag07 (talk) 04:24, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- "I really don't know anything about these ships, nor am I going to look up if each class is named after a ship of that particular class." Seriously? If you don't know enough about the subject to do the job properly, and you're not prepared to look up what you need to know to do the job properly, why are you trying to do the job?
- You also need to be aware that you're using the wrong markup.
DISPLAYTITLE
is a magic word, not a template, and it uses a colon, not a pipe. For example,{{DISPLAYTITLE|''Bullfinch''-class destroyer}}
should be{{DISPLAYTITLE:''Bullfinch''-class destroyer}}
- You also need to be aware that you're using the wrong markup.
- Why not? No one complained when I did the majority of the ships (all the HMS ships, the USS ships, etc). Why do I want to do it? I am bored. These are improperly titled pages. I tried to get someone on the bot page to fix it, but no one wanted to program it. So I am doing in manually. This is an all volunteer encyclopedia. I really don't want to put the extra time into researching all 2000 ship classes out there. If you want to, be my guest. Oldag07 (talk) 06:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC) (Modified several times)
- Yes, this is an all-volunteer encyclopedia. That's one of the reasons this is bothering me. When you do bad work, other people – other volunteers – have to give up their time to follow in your footsteps and fix the things you should have done right in the first place. Do you think anybody else wants to put in the extra time, any more than you do?
- I sympathise with being bored and wanting a mindless job to pass the time (I've been there myself) but this is not one of those jobs. Fixing incorrectly-titled pages requires that you know enough about the subject to recognise which pages are incorrectly titled, and to know what to correct them to. If you don't know enough about the subject (which you've admitted you don't), and you're not willing to spend a few seconds per page to learn what you need to know (which you've admitted you aren't), it would be better if you found some other way to lighten your boredom, and left this job to the people who do and who are.
Yes, I understand your frustration that some of these pages should not be italicized. Most should. I tried to clean up the ones that I knew where wrong, and I fixed the template, DISPLAYTITLE. However, as the quote says, "the needs of the many outways the needs of the few". Considering the fact that most of the pages were neglected enough not to have italics in their titles, overall, a massive campaign to italicize ship names does far more good then damage. Oldag07 (talk) 14:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for fixing the DISPLAYTITLE markup, anyway. And I admit that you are doing a lot of good work; thank you for that, too. — Paul A (talk) 06:22, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Disambiguation link notification for February 24
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Star Trek (film series), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Scotty and Chekov (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

There are two links to J. J. Abrams in the article, and three links to Star Trek (film), but even if there were more the links I added are necessary, because it's the top of the page. Also, the first thing that many people look at in an article is the infobox. --Homerland (talk) 17:26, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Three in-line links. --Homerland (talk) 17:29, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
- Maybe we can add the links to the infobox and remove a few of them in the article. That seems like a good compromise. Oldag07 (talk) 21:02, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
- I just don't see which ones. There aren't that many.
- Thanks for the heads-up! --Homerland (talk) 23:35, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
