Can you help me i don't know how to do that

Comment/question: BracketBot mentioned that I could have broken the syntax of the page by using "(" without a ")". This is a misunderstanding, I added an image whose file name contains a "(" but no ")". The page's syntax is not broken, the page is shown correctly.

Marvin Ruder 20:00, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Sorry to butt in. @Ruder.marvin: You are correct the syntax is valid, but commons:File:Außenansicht des Gymnasiums Athenaeum in Stade (Quelle- "http---www-bundesfinanzministerium-de-Content-DE-Standardartikel-Themen-Oeffentliche Finanzen-Foederale Finanzbeziehungen-Kommunales Zukunftsinvestitio 2014-01-05 15-00.jpg is a really awful file name which is likely to cause confusion. I suggest you request a renaming there with commons:Template:Rename, for example with the code {{rename|Außenansicht des Gymnasiums Athenaeum in Stade.jpg|1|Source should not be part of name|user={{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}}. Otherwise the first Commons editor who comes by may choose a more suitable name. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Re. your bot's msg in the above link: puzzled. I just don't see what it means [I'd have suppressed a bracket? (possible but only to replace it with a lot of info) or what else??]. Here I suspect that I don't understand its language because itself, in this case, doesn't know what it's going on about ;) So whatever it means, pls do make sure that yr bot doesn't start fiddling with the article without intelligent supervision (that's yours, not its own) (and maybe yours doesn't do that but I don't know so just in case...) Thanks. Have a good day. Or night... 88.219.191.34 (talk) 20:32, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, thank you for improving that article. Among all that improvement, you had forgotten an opening parenthesis for one of the dates. Fixed, among some other minor improvements. BracketBot itself does not edit articles at all but only notifies humans so they can take a look. Huon (talk) 23:59, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Too fast on the draw

Can Bracketbot be slowed down a bit? While I appreciate the information that I have made a mistake, a lot of them will get spotted and corrected as I edit the page anyway. The messages from Bracketbot are a distraction and cause talk page litter. Perhaps only responding to edits over two hours old? SpinningSpark 15:20, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Works of Henri Chapu

Resolved

Hi

I would very much appreciate your help as I seem to be making a mess of my citations. I add a citation, it seems okay but the next day is lost. Think I made the mistake of running "reflinks" bot through article.

What I really need to know is how I should deal with citations. Should I put [1] or [2] or is there another way?

I have written several wiki pieces but my recent piece on Antonin Mercie has received multiple tags which suggest the piece is not up to standard but when I approached the editor he did not seem inclined to help.

If you have time please look at the Mercie piece and let me know where I am going wrong. Do not worry about offending me. I just need to know where I am going wrong.

I am 74 years of age, retired and find writing up these Wikipedia whatnots really enjoyable. My modus operandi is to see what is already written on Wikipedia and if I think it does not adequately cover the artist then I compile a listing of the work done. I research it as thoroughly as I can.

Weglinde (talk) 10:49, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Still having major problems with links on "Works of Henri Chapu". Really need help! Sure you must be busy but I wonder whether using "reflinks" has caused all my problems.

Thanks

Weglinde (talk) 16:46, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Weglinde, I have fixed the first 35 references. Look at the pattern and you can fix the rest yourself. In general, the pattern inside each reference is: left bracket, web address, space, title of web page, right bracket, period, remaining text. Thanks for your hard work in improving this article. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:49, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks BracketBot for the regulators list

Thanks for the detection on the page List of telecommunications regulatory bodies

I just added another minor edit to put the two regulators of Switzerland on the same line, by taking Canada as a model.

I am updating this page before translating it for the French version of Wikipedia --Coopedia (talk) 05:45, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This was not a false positive. You added references below the {{reflist}} template, not above it within the article text itself; that did cause an error because the template can only display footnotes defined above it. Frze fixed that, but the footnotes should be moved out of the references section altogether and should instead be put immediately after the statements they're cited for. If a Wikipedia page does not allow me to display my hard earned accoplishments and someone else can delte my entries, then it's time for my whole page/entry to be deleted. This all started because there was a notice that my page needed links, which I tred to add. After years of having no problem, this is just too much trouble. These confusions is not worth it. Thank you

Wikipedia is not the place for self-promotion. You provided not a single third-party source for all your hard-earned accomplishments; thus they were removed. Also, you do not own that article; it seems that you do satisfy Wikipedia's guideline for notability; thus we will have an article about you even if it doesn't look the way you would like it to look. You should also take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing about yourself is not a good idea. Huon (talk) 00:44, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment/question: mathematics like n>1 is interpreted like mistake. :-( (and the smiles too) :-( EdwardGoldobin (talk) 00:25, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

These are known issues. The bot keeps an eye on <> because they're used for HTML tags where a mismatch can easily make half an article vanish from sight. That's vastly more common on Wikipedia than the mathematical use. Smileys are much rarer still; I expect a "smiley detector" that wouldn't have false positives of its own would be exceedingly difficult to program and not worth the few smileys within articles. Why don't you just fix the broken syntax instead leaving me a message? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrCellular (talkcontribs) 10:21, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@MrCellular: Because that would require a very high level of AI. Also, it can't detect existing problems, only those which are caused by the edit. Also, there are a lot of false positives, so it is always better for a human to go through them. --Mdann52talk to me! 11:05, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a joke? I mean are you serious with your last sentence? Are you like Siri? MrCellular (talk) 12:02, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea what Siri's stance on this issue is, but it's a fact that there are quite a few false positives, and having a human look at the issues pointed out by the bot is far better than the mayhem the bot would cause on its own. Huon (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am sure that I have fixed them all but wonder whether I can rerun the bot to make sure. If so how do I do this.

Weglinde (talk) 13:15, 29 January 2014 (UTC) Comment/question:[reply]

Weglinde (talk) 13:15, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The bot checks only new edits, not articles, and it produces a notification only if a new edit adds mismatched brackets. So technically you could deliberately add a mismatched bracket to a page to have the bot point out all issues on that page, but I wouldn't recommend that. Instead I double-checked the old bot messages; all seems to be resolved now. Huon (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Weglinde: A930913 just pointed out that there is a way to check a page for remaining mismatched brackets: Here. Huon (talk) 00:00, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment/question: I've raised this issue before, apparently to no avail, but I'll try again. BracketBot notices appear in my talk page at a section with the title ==<Month> <Year>==. If that section does not exist, and BracketBot creates it at the end of my talk page, that's fine. But when BracketBot insists on leaving all further messages within this page section, even after the page has moved on with other discussions, it makes it VERY hard to find the later notices. Can you please update the BOT to place new notices at the bottom of a user's talk page? Perhaps with a new heading "Notes from BracketBot" or something like that? Thanks! See User:BracketBot#Daily Instead of Monthly Headers. However, the decision to have the messages bundled by month was deliberate, and I don't expect the default behavior will be changed. Huon (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Infobox football biography. There's an "image=" parameter which should take the name of an image that has been uploaded to Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Commons, without the "File:" prefix; if the image were File:Example.jpg that line should say "image=Example.jpg" without the quotation marks. However, images of living persons must be freely licensed to be acceptable to Wikipedia. Do you know of such an image? Huon (talk) 20:57, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Page: The original reason for reviewing the issue in question was the article on The English Patient (1996; movie) that had a distinction from the British Oscar equivalent which The English Patient page was linked to the BFI top 100 films article which then used a url source that shows up as an error message--page not found. But the url on the BFI website had been updated and when that was used to update the reference that is when the error message came up with Wiki

Diff:

Comment/question: The way the current BFI article is set up is that it states what were at the time the list was established as the top 100 British films So when links are to that page it is to an older list that at some time may be reissued with the latest top 100 filmslist. So the article should probably be changed to the BFI's top 100 films list"s" and the table in it used to track the rank of each movie on each list. I believe I left a note on the talk page about this to get a consensus about it. But I am concerned that if there are other articles that link to that article then how is it possible to identify all the links so that as part of the project the links can be updated? I suggested this because there is an American Institute of Film top 100 lists article with a table that includes each succeeding list. So that article will have a continuing value whereas the BFI article stays at the issuance of the original list.
