Whirlwind Recordings (WWR) is a London, UK-based independent record label focused on original, creative music, with an emphasis on improvisation. The label was founded in 2010 by bassist, composer, educator and producer Michael Janisch.

History
Janisch created Whirlwind Recordings to release his debut solo album Purpose Built in January 2010. The label has released dozens of critically acclaimed albums from musicians mainly based in New York City and London, with a growing number of artists coming from mainland Europe. As of June 2014, the label's catalog listed more than 40 albums.[1] In its brief existence, WWR has already been heralded "the label of the moment"[2] by BBC Radio 3 as well as "the most exciting new jazz label based in the UK"[3] by the Financial Times.
Although Whirlwind Recordings' albums are generally sold under the genre names "jazz" or "world," WWR is not concerned with labeling and to date has primarily concerned itself with releasing music that is either completely original or creatively arranged, with a key emphasis on improvisation.[4][5]
