Banarhat (Bengali: বানারহাট Hindi: बानारहाट) is a Town in Jalpaiguri district in the state of West Bengal, India. Banarhat is a small Town Sorrounding 23 Tea Garden in Dooasrs Region in Jalpaiguri district in the state of West Bengal, India. People of twenty Three tea gardens in and around are dependent on this town for their essentials. Population of Banarhat is about 25,000 and it is spread in an area of about 900sq. km. Banarhat is 72 km. far from Siliguri and 65 km from Jalpaiguri ( The District Town). This is the melting pot of different cultures where the aborigines, the tea garden workers, Marwaris, Asamese, Bengalis, Oriya from both side of the border and Nepalese leave together in harmony. Banarhat is surrounded by tea gardens and basties (villages). The tea gardens around has ensured that people in this area have a relatively better standard of leaving. Major occupation of people is service. Although many are engaged in businesses as well. Banarhat is one of the most important towns in Dooars. The town is strategically located on the NH-31C providing close access to major tourist attractions around.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Banarhat Town had a population of 14,431. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Banarhat has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; with 59% of the males and 41% of females literate. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Transport

Banarhat is connected by State road to the district town of Jalpaiguri and other nearby towns of Dhupguri,Gayerkata, mainaguri etc. It lies on National Highway 31C (which runsroad, crosses the Teesta river at the Coronation bridge or Tiger bridge or Bagh pool, Siliguri,Odlabari, Mal Bazar,Birpara,Hasimara , Alipurduar and beyond).

Banarhat has one important railway station: Banarhat (Code: BNQ, Railway Zone: Northeast Frontier) - on the New Jalpaiguri-Alipurduar-Samuktala Road Line.
