== Wajam ==

My first attempt at actually interacting with Wikipedia, trying to help put a final resolution to a page that has had numerous issues for over two years.

Please let me know if I missed any of the necessary steps in submitting something for deletion, I followed the guide as closely as I could.

Thank you![[User:Jkjdeff|Jkjdeff]] ([[User talk:Jkjdeff|talk]]) 03:23, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Please use this page to contact me regarding any entries I have created or edited.

DJ and MH

Hello D. I wanted to let you know that I started a thread here Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 126#Article move gone awry. I think that I have reverted things back to where they are supposed to be but, if not, another editor will let us know there. Thanks for your vigilance in this situation and happy editing whenever possible :-) MarnetteD | Talk 02:11, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. That wound up being a much bigger deal than I thought it would be. If we come across the situation again at least we now know that it has to be reported. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 05:48, 22 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alan Vega

Alan Vega (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I understand that Alan Vega might not want to acknowledge his Jewish wife of 10 years, but my source is the autobiography "Mindele's Journey" by Mindele's Bermowitz, which documents her decade long marriage to Alan, before he adopted the surname "Vega". Therefore, my edit was valid and factual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Snowboardingcat83 (talkcontribs) 04:00, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Snowboardingcat83: Then you must cite that source, which you did not do in the edit I reverted. See WP:CITE. Also see WP:Biography of living persons. Dwpaul Talk 04:04, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And not at all sure what to make of the comment "might not want to acknowledge his Jewish wife" -- Is that an anti-Semitic comment? Dwpaul Talk 04:06, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that I am Jewish, it is not an anti-semetic remark. However, I do draw private conclusions as to why he refuses to acknowledge their marriage. I did site my source, in stating that she authored the book I gathered my facts from, which emphasized her experience as a Holocaust survivor.

There was no citation in the information (one sentence) I reverted[1]. I don't mean that you need to be prepared to state your source when someone questions you about your edit; I mean that your edit must include a citation. Once again, please see WP:Biography of living persons. If you need guidance as to how to include citations with your edits, please see WP:CITE as I suggested above. Roy Henry (Alexander) Gover 1927 - 2003

I have been researching my family history and this has brought me to Roy Henry Gover who is my 5th Cousin 2x removed. My research shows that Roy was the youngest of 5 children born Roy Henry Gover to John Alexander Gover & Norah Emily Gover (nee Simmonds). He was born in Edmonton London England on 29th August 1927 not 1929 as is recorded on most of the internet articles. He was also married twice - once in 1955 to Jean A M Guiver in Brentwood Essex England and again in 1966 to Pamela Anne Nowak in Marin California USA. I thought the best place to start getting the error on his year of birth changed would be Wikipedia. I have obtained his date of birth from records held on Ancestry.co.uk where I research my family and on a biopic film - [1] - After 17:00 minutes one of Roy's earliest paintings is shown - painted in 1938 when he was aged 11 this confirms his correct year of birth and is signed by Roy himself. Perhaps this film could be used for citation purposes? I hope this information supports my request to change his year of birth but please feel free to contact me if you require any further information. — Preceding undated comment added SNOGNUT SNOGNUT (talk) 09:12, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@SNOGNUT: Please see WP:BLP, WP:CITE and WP:Reliable sources. Unfortunately, a video posted on vimeo.com is not a reliable source, since anyone can produce and post a video stating anything they like. A newspaper article, a scholarly entry, a page in a book are more generally reliable sources. Dwpaul Talk 11:58, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As for "as is recorded on most of the internet articles", a) actually the opposite is true (more hits via Google list him as having been born in 1929), b) this is not a valid way of establishing birth dates for Wikipedia articles, and c) it is an extremely faulty way of doing so as there are many sites which mirror Wikipedia's content, giving false weight to what is already here. Dwpaul Talk 12:03, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Lastly, please see also WP:Original research. Thanks. Dwpaul Talk 12:04, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dwpaul - I am not familiar with the complexities of Wikipedia's system. I merely wished to point out an inaccuracy. The Ancestry.com information is copyright therefore can not be used as citation. If you search for birth records on FreeBMD.Org for Roy H Gover you will find his birth recorded in 1927. Also his USA Social Security death record show his birth as 1927 not 1929 - freely available on Familysearch.Org. From the tone of your reply it is clear you will perpetuate this inaccuracy - so be it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by SNOGNUT (talkcontribs) 09:10, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There are unquestionably many inaccuracies in Wikipedia. Unfortunately, simply knowing of an inaccuracy does not allow us to substitute alternate information in its place. We have policies here concerning how such information is selected and presented, especially in articles that pertain to people and biography. I provided you with links to several of those policies above. Since it is clear "from the tone of your reply" that you either didn't read them or don't understand them, then as you say, so be it! Dwpaul Talk 15:45, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rev/del

Glad that was sorted. I see it was actually suppressed by OTRS which is really often the best way to do this sort of thing. I'm afraid I was asleep at the time, I'm on UTC (summer time). Dougweller (talk) 10:38, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all. I (belatedly) figured that was probably the case, so sought out another to help with the rev/del. Thanks! Dwpaul Talk 15:47, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A question

When I write "pending", it means she is nominated officially but the award hasn't been given yet. However, the nom is already out. (http://www.indiewire.com/article/television/critics-choice-television-awards-nominate-broad-city-for-best-comedy-true-detective-for-drama-series) --190.95.12.59 (talk) 03:01, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Then the correct term to use is "Nominated", not "Pending". Someone who is nominated may not be selected as the final recipient of the award. See other nominations as they appear in the article. Dwpaul Talk 12:02, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I now that. But then, why does the {{pending}} template exists? --200.126.122.12 (talk) 03:09, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because the template family of which "Won", "Nominated" and "Pending" are members are used for all sorts of things, not just awards. See Template:Pending. Dwpaul Talk 03:13, 31 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Picture Edit

I don't understand how posting a picture of Judge Ricky Polston is vandelism. It is a picture if him???

Shmavy (talk) 00:32, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What you posted is an artistic depiction of a warrior on a horse (without any attribution or copyright information). It is not a portrait or image of the current Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Dwpaul Talk 00:38, 1 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

RS requirements

Erowid meets all of Wikipedia's requirements, is widely referenced throughout Wikipedia, and is considered a reliable source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.234.73.156 (talk) 00:09, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a dog in that hunt at all. So far, the only discussions at WP:RS/N about Erowid and its reliability [2][3][4] are lukewarm at best, and the consensus of the first is pretty clear that it is not reliable. Perhaps you're saying that it is reliable enough for you, but you cannot make that statement ("is considered a reliable source"[by whom?]) on behalf of Wikipedia without evidence of consensus on that question. I have no problem with the inclusion of a second, more mainstream source to back up what Erowid has said, and neither should you, unless you have a personal interest in promoting Erowid. Kakan

I would like for you to take a look at Kakan Hermansson's article that I created yesterday. For spelling, and structure of the article.... When you got time for it. Cheers.--BabbaQ (talk) 14:07, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Really appreciate your help with this article! I plan to nominate it for DYK on saturday or sunday. Thanks!--BabbaQ (talk) 22:26, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@BabbaQ: OK, think I'm more or less done for now. Apologies if I monopolized the article for awhile – would probably have been hard to get an edit in while I was working on it! Good luck at DYK, let me know if anything else I can do to help. Dwpaul Talk 22:54, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you again! I have just created a stub about Cristina Scuccia a singing nun who won The Voice of Italy. She is really funny :).--BabbaQ (talk) 19:07, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know (of) Sister Scuccia. My wife called my attention to the news report this morning that she had won. ;-) Dwpaul Talk 19:10, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
She is hilarious :-) An article that I created Soraya Post will appear at DYK in a few days time. :) Always nice.--BabbaQ (talk) 22:31, 6 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Elm dissertation abstract

Re your null edit here, Dwpaul: thanks, I hadn't thought of that. But I'm hoping the tool will miss it since I changed the reference right back to the way I put it originally, i. e. to humanspeak, which I don't think it can read. :-) Diannaa had changed it to a citation template in between, and I think that may be the reason the tool caught it. Diannaa, ping, please check out my edit summary here, please don't templatify the reference again. Not that I intend to edit war about it. ;-) Bishonen | talk 22:28, 5 June 2014 (UTC).[reply]

Okay -- Diannaa (talk) 23:03, 5 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

could you please revert your mistake on Jimmy Fallon psychopath page.

http://www.sbs.com.au/insight/episode/transcript/618/What-Makes-a-Psychopath

Fallon is no psychopath and has nil evidence to support his claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Not an onion (talkcontribs) 23:45, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No mistake. Your edit was unsourced, and that is why it was reverted. Any claim (especially controversial, as we might expect this to be) about a living person requires citation of a reliable source. This is especially important for negative claims about the subject, but positive as well. I don't care if it says he's a genius, or that he's a great cook – if unsourced, it will be reverted. Dwpaul Talk 23:52, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well if you do not except a citation from prof Simon Baron-Cohen or DSM-5 i think you may have lost the plot your self old chap. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Baron-Cohen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Not an onion (talkcontribs) 23:36, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You did not include any citations in your edit (and another Wikipedia article cannot serve as a citation). Please read the notice I placed on your User Talk page carefully, as the links it contains explain all of the above. And would you please learn how to sign your edits here, by typing four tildes after your comments? Dwpaul Talk 00:01, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Silent Witness

The original plot of Silent Witness gives the entire twist away. It hurts more than it helps. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevejobsfakeaccount (talkcontribs) 02:46, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The sentences you removed make it clear that the admission in court may be false. Proving (or disproving) it is the plot. There is no need to remove them. Dwpaul Talk 02:51, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The movie is that the daughter is on trial for a murder. Whether or not she committed it is the plot of the movie, albeit she ends up being a minor character. The twist is everything that comes after. Removing the two sentences improves the plot, while preserving the twists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevejobsfakeaccount (talkcontribs) 02:55, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Articles

Please take a look at Rudolf Fredrik Berg and Henry Dunker when you got time for it! Especially the Berg article needs assistance if possible. Thanks.--BabbaQ (talk) 21:35, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the invitation. I'm considering taking a wikibreak for a little while, so if I don't take up the challenge it's because I'm distracted with real life. ;-) Dwpaul Talk 21:39, 11 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you for your edits :) If you have not taken that Wikibreak yet I would be really happy with some assistance with the Skogssamer article that I created yesterday! Otherwise enjoy your Wikibreak :)!--BabbaQ (talk) 10:48, 14 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Knife Collecting

Knife collecting (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Dwpaul -- I just added an external link to the Knife Collecting article. You removed it. You left a commercial entry -- Blade Magazine and another organization for collectors. The North Star club is the same. It has members from 14 states and is open to anyone. It's website references other knife-related websites and organizations. Please restore that entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wwwjimbo (talkcontribs) 02:50, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Wwwjimbo: The other external sites listed in that article clearly had national and international scope. My sense from looking at the site you linked to was that it was primarily of local (Minnesota) interest. While I can appreciate that you have members from a variety of locations and are open to anyone (as I'm sure is true of most clubs), we cannot (and will not) offer links in that article to every knife club in every US state. If you think your club is somehow notable, consider writing an article about it. You of course have the option of reverting my edit, but if you do I will move this discussion to the article's Talk page (which is really where it belongs) and others may have different opinions to share. By the way, please remember to always sign your comments on Talk pages by typing four tildes after your comments. Dwpaul Talk 02:59, 19 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Diane Neal

I don't understand how the information I posted was controversial when Diane Neal posted the information herself on twitter? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasminsays98 (talkcontribs) 23:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1) Marriage and divorce always have the potential to be controversial. 2) It doesn't matter whether known to be controversial or not; please read the links in the message I posted on your Talk page, especially Wikipedia's policy regarding biography of living persons, and you will see that all information that is even slightly open to challenge must be properly sourced. (An example of the rare sort of information about a person otherwise presumed to be alive that need not be sourced is that someone who was born before 1900 is most likely dead.) 3) How do you know that Diane Neal sent the tweet herself? Did you watch her type it? Dwpaul Talk 00:05, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you so arrogant? Her twitter is verified so clearly i don't need to have seen her type it myself, feel free to go check it for yourself if you don't believe it and maybe learn so manner why you're at it!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasminsays98 (talkcontribs) 00:22, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The person whose name is on a Twitter account cannot be assumed to be the one using it. Twitter accounts are compromised all the time. The policies I have described for you and suggested you read and follow are not "arrogant", nor did I write them. If you do not read and follow them, however, you will be blocked from editing. End of discussion. Dwpaul Talk 00:34, 21 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
