Development

The director of the film Rajamouli and Prabhas worked on 6 to 7 subjects to finalize this project before the release of Magadheera. As the director is a perfectionist in selecting the right subject they finalized Baahubali.[14] The director and his team went for a location hunt in the few parts of Karnataka and Kerala.[15] After scouting some locations in Karnataka and Kerala, director and his team went to Rajasthan to scout more locations.[16] Prabhas, Rana and Anushka did some home work for the film. They practiced Sword fighting and Prabhas and Rana learned Horse riding.[17] By March 2013, Rajamouli was said to be busy with the design of weapons which would be used by the leads.[18] The filming of the film was then announced to be started in June, 2013.[19] Filming started on 6 July 2013 and Alexa XT camera made by Arri (Arnold & Richter Cine Technik (A&R)) company is being used to shoot the film. The producer of the film has confirmed that the film would be shot in Telugu and Tamil languages simultaneously and will be dubbed in Malayalam, Hindi and in several Foreign languages and all versions will be released on the same date.[2] For its excessive length, the film was later decided to be a two part film which would release by 2015.[20]

Casting

Anushka Shetty was recruited as the heroine of the film later who was also a part of Mirchi.[21] She coincidentally became the first heroine Rajamouli repeated in his films and thus made her schedules full for 2013 and 2014 thanks to her simultaneous shoot for Rudhramadevi.[22] She would be seen as Devasena in the film.[10] Rana Daggubati was recruited as the antagonist of the film and he was said to be playing the role of Prabhas' brother and coincidentally he was also a part of Rudhramadevi. He too underwent a lot of physical transformation for the role he was assigned to play in the film.[23] Tamil actor Sathyaraj signed the film,[13] where he will be sporting a Tonsured look.[24] Kannada actor Sudeep is doing a small but important role in the film.[25] He said that he would play the role of a weapons trader in this film.[26] He shot for 4 Days in July 2013 for the film and had to fight with Sathyaraj in a sequence composed by Peter Hein.[27] In April 2013, Adivi Sesh was recruited for a crucial role in the film as Rajamouli was impressed by his work in the Panjaa, which was released in 2011.[28] Actress Ramya Krishnan was chosen to play the crucial role in the film as Rajamatha in August 2013.[12] On 20 December 2013 a press release stated that Tamannaah will be second heroine of the film.[4]

Filming

The shooting of the film has started at Rock Gardens in Kurnool from 6 July 2013.[2][29] A set was erected in Ramoji film city to shoot war sequences from 23 December 2013 until 5 March 2014.[4]

Marketing

A number of short promotional "making of" videos has been released.[8][9][30][31][32][33] The first look poster featuring Tamannaah was released on 20 December 2013 to coincide with her birthday on 21 December 2013.[4] The film used an Augmented Reality application Rev Eye to create a what when scanned the trailer of the film would play on smart phones and tablets.[34][35]

Title issues

A legal notice was sent against the use of the title. Bahubali is a revered figure in Jainism and has its origin in the Jain tradition of Karnataka. The Sode Matha, which has issued the legal notice, fears that the story of Baahubali would be depicted in a violent manner.[36]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released on 17 April 2015.[1][8]
