With regard to its population, in 1960 it was the 8th largest settlement in Famagusta District and the 32nd largest in Cyprus.

Lefkoniko is the location of Lefkoniko airport with a 3400m runway, the longest on the island, used mostly for military purposes. It is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus. Lefkoniko is the birthplace of Cypriot national poet Vasilis Michaelides and is known for its lace.
