|ShortSummary = While Amelia and Stephanie begin Dr. Herman’s surgery, Arizona and Bailey work together to save the life of their pregnant patient. However, they have differing professional opinions about how to proceed. Arizona doesn’t want to deliver the baby, whereas Bailey is demanding a nurse to page Alex. Amelia also finds herself trapped when she doesn’t know what path to follow in removing the tumor. Standing absolutely still and staring at Dr. Herman’s brain, she does not proceed until Richard chimes in with words of encouragement. Pleading to Richard to call Derek and get him on a plane and claiming that she can’t continue this surgery, Richard provides confidence in her that no one knows the history and story of this tumor. No one can save Dr. Herman but her. Bailey bullies Arizona past her breaking point, and with memories of Dr. Herman telling her how mistaken she was to choose her for the fellowship, Arizona tells Bailey to get on board or get out. With persistence, Arizona is able to save the patient and her baby. After 13 hours of surgery, it’s time for radiation. Meredith, now standing by Amelia (Stephanie fainted), watches her stick her unprotected hand into Dr. Herman’s brain to place markers that help prevent the tumor from coming back. Luckily, Amelia is able to retract her hand in time before getting sick. Days pass after the surgery is completed, and Dr. Herman still hasn’t woke up. Wanting this case to be over, Amelia watches the surgery on repeat looking for some explanation. Stephanie helps to solve the mystery by finding the mark of a stroke on an x-ray. Dr. Herman eventually wakes up, but to Arizona’s dismay, she is completely blind. Amelia informs Stephanie to live on the high she has of saving Dr. Herman, and not beat herself up for Dr. Herman going blind.

List of episodes

The eleventh season of the American television medical drama Grey's Anatomy premiered on September 25, 2014 in the United States on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) and consists of 24 episodes. The season was produced by ABC Studios, in association with ShondaLand Production Company and The Mark Gordon Company; the showrunner being Shonda Rhimes.

Plots

The season follows the story of surgical residents, fellows, and attendings as they experience the difficulties of the competitive careers they have chosen. It is set in the surgical wing of the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, located in Seattle, Washington.

During an interview, Shonda Rhimes stated that "Season 11 is really a Meredith-centric season. She lost her ‘person’, her half-sister has shown up, her husband is chafing to go someplace else..." She went on to reveal that she's been wanting to do the "familial grenade" storyline for a long time, and at the end of Season 10, she knew it was the time to do it. Rhimes also claimed that Season 11 will pick up right where Season 10 left us, so there won't be much that the audience won't see.[1] In another interview discussing this storyline, Rhimes revealed that she and the writers are thinking about doing flashback periods to the younger days of Drs. Ellis Grey and Richard Webber.

Cast

Casting

On August 13, 2013, Sandra Oh revealed that she would be leaving after Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy.[2] Thus, this is the first season in which Dr. Cristina Yang, portrayed by Sandra Oh, is not included in the main cast of characters. It was announced on March 25, 2014 that Gaius Charles (Dr. Shane Ross) and Tessa Ferrer (Dr. Leah Murphy) were also not having their options picked up for Season 11, meaning that Season 10 was their last as series regulars on the show. Only Jerrika Hinton (Dr. Stephanie Edwards) and Camilla Luddington (Dr. Jo Wilson) returned as residents.[3] On January 23, 2014 it was reported that Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey had renewed their contracts for another two seasons, as Drs. Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd, respectively, meaning their characters would be staying on the medical drama for seasons 11 and 12.[4] On May 2, 2014, the rest of the six original cast mates, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr., excluding Sandra Oh, renewed their contracts for another two seasons (11 and 12) as Drs. Alex Karev, Miranda Bailey, and Richard Webber, respectively. Sara Ramirez also renewed her contract for another two seasons as Dr. Callie Torres.[5]

Caterina Scorsone was upgraded to a series regular for Season 11 and became a fan and critics favorite with many strongly praising her performance and storyline.

E! News, as well as other sources, reported on June 23, 2014 that Caterina Scorsone was upgraded to a series regular to continue her role as Dr. Amelia Shepherd, one of Dr. Derek Shepherd's four sisters. Scorsone previously played Dr. Amelia Shepherd since Season 7 on Grey's Anatomy as a recurring role. She was also a series regular on the show's spin-off series, Private Practice, portraying the same character from Seasons 3-6.[6]

At first, it was uncertain who would play the younger Ellis, as there have been two different actresses who played Ellis within the relatively same period: Kate Burton and Sarah Paulson.[7] However, on August 6, 2014, it was confirmed that Kate Burton will portray the character in flashbacks in the season premiere.[8] Despite this confirmation, on September 25, 2014, it was announced that Kate Burton's scenes had been cut from the season premiere, and Sally Pressman (Army Wives) would play the role of Ellis. Kate Burton still appeared in flashbacks later in the season. J. August Richards also reprised his role as a young Richard Webber.[9]

It was announced on August 8, 2014 that Geena Davis is going to have a major guest arc storyline in Season 11. She will be playing Dr. Herman, a fetal surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.[10] Another guest star was revealed on September 2, 2014. Annet Mahendru of The Americans will guest star for one episode; however, at the time of the announcement, no details about her role nor when she'd appear were discussed.[11] Mahendru guest starred in "Only Mama Knows" as Ana, an undocumented immigrant whose daughter had an 8 pound tumor.

It was announced on September 23, 2014 that Connie Ray (Space Jam, Hope Floats, Stuart Little) would guest star as Dr. April Kepner's mother, Karen, in the episode, "Don't Let's Start."[12]

On October 23, 2014, Kelly McCreary was promoted to a series regular after being credited as guest-starring in the first four episodes of Season 11.[13]

Development

Grey's Anatomy was renewed for an eleventh season by ABC on May 8, 2014.[14] On May 13, 2014, ABC announced their new schedule, as well as a new timeslot for Grey's Anatomy. The show remained on Thursday night, but it was moved to 8:00 PM E.T. to make room for ShondaLand Production Company's new TV series, How to Get Away with Murder.[15] Even though Paul Lee, the president of ABC, moved Grey's Anatomy to a new timeslot, he announced at ABC's 2014-15 upfront that Season 11 would follow in Season 10 fashion and be split into two batches each consisting of 12 uninterrupted episodes (excluding holidays), meaning Season 11 consists of 24 episodes.[16][17]

Not even a week after the Season 10 finale episode aired, the Grey's Anatomy team of writers began collaborating on ideas for Season 11 storylines. Shonda Rhimes tweeted that they were hard at work in the writing room, but would have the month of June off before coming back in full swing to write actual episodes.[18] After the 4th of July weekend, Rhimes tweeted that the writers' room was once again buzzing, as the team had returned from vacation to start writing new episodes for Season 11. Soon after the announcement from Rhimes, Camilla Luddington announced via Twitter that the filming of Season 11 would commence on July 25.[19]

In late July 2014, Sarah Drew (who plays Dr. April Kepner) showed the world her real-life baby bump. Expecting her second child, her pregnancy was perfectly timed with Dr. Kepner's pregnancy on the show.[20]

For the 2014-15 TV season, ABC programmed its entire Thursday primetime lineup with Shondaland dramas Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder, then branded the night as "Thank God It's Thursday" (or "TGIT").[21] This echoes ABC's former TGIF branding of its Friday night family sitcoms and even NBC's Must See TV promotion of formidable Thursday night television hits in the 1990s.[22]

Wetpaint reported on October 3, 2014 that in the month of October, fans could expect to see a Calzona-centric episode. In an interview during the summer, Rhimes said, "I'll be honest with you and say that there is literally a 50/50 chance that they'll be together or apart, and I have not figured it out yet. We really spent a lot of time in the writers' room mapping it out and talking about it. We've really mapped out what we think is going to be a really nice journey for them."[23] This will be the second episode of the month to focus on specific characters. A Maggie-centric episode aired on October 2, 2014.

The remaining fall schedule for ABC was announced on October 30, 2014, where it was announced that Grey's Anatomy would be split into two batches. However, instead of the 12 and 12, there will be eight episodes in the fall which will end with a winter finale on November 20, 2014 like the rest of ABC's primetime lineup "TGIT" Scandal and How To Get Away with Murder.[24] The remaining 16 episodes will air after the winter break, beginning on January 29, 2015.[25]
