Prof. Dr. Qamar-Uz-Zaman Chaudhry is a Pakistani meteorologist and research scientist. He is the current Vice President of World Meteorological Organisation.[2] He was retired from the position of Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department on 13 September 2010. He is a researcher in the field of Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology and Seismology. Chaudhry a well-known scientist in Pakistan who has written articles in the fields of Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, Seismology, Plate tectonics and earthquakes. His more than 50 research papers have been published in national and international scientific journals. He is currently working as Senior Advisor LEAD Pakistan on Climate Change Program. [3]

Education

Born in Sargodha, Pakistan, Chaudhry received his early education from Lahore. Later, he attended Government College University where he received his B.Sc in Physics with honors and M.Sc. in Physics from the Quaid-i-Azam University. He received his Ph.D in meteorology from University of the Philippines Los Baños.

PMD Career and Chairman

He became the Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department in 1996 and was retired from this position on 13 September 2010. He is a prominent scientist in Pakistan. His contributions were involved in 2005 Kashmir earthquake, a disastrous earthquake in Pakistan which resulted in hundreds of deaths. He set up Seismology and earthquake warning research centers in the Kashmir region as well as other parts of the country.

As a noted international research scientist, Chaudhry has produced numerous articles that are published in national and international science journals. His articles are heavily focused in the field of meteorology, Extreme weather, forecast, hydrological and high impact weather systems technology, agricultural meteorology, global warming, climatic changes and natural disasters.

In 1993, he was awarded the SAARC Best Young Scientist Research Award for his contribution to meteorological sciences in Pakistan as well as in South Asia. In 1999, he was awarded the high civilian award Pride of Performance from the President of Pakistan, Justice (r) Muhammad Rafiq Tarar.

In 2009, he was honoured to become Vice President of World Meteorological Organisation after competing with most of the Asians, European Countries including India, Japan etc.
