Hi, I am rather new to this but I noticed on your 'citropten' page that the picture you put up for the molecule does not correspond to 5,7-dimethoxy but to 6,8-dimethoxy whereas the smiles formula seems to be correct. I may be mistaken of course. Sorry If I bothered you !

Is there an SPI or a named account associated with your 6 month block of this IP? I'm seeing a long history of multiple IPs making strange spammy mentions of various high school bands, song selections, and the Macy's Parade on talk pages. This IP made some of those edits. Most recent edits include some which restored previously deleted talk page edits by other IPs so it seems certain to be the same editor. See [1] for example. Meters (talk) 06:39, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

The behavior of both the IPs 47.17.68.177 and 2600:1017:b40e:f986:7938:6170:a82f:1b04 is consistent with what is outlined at User:Salvidrim!/Macy VG IP vandal. (I was unaware of Salvidrim!'s page when I made the block on 47.17.68.177, but have included that link in more recent blocks of this individual.) As far as I know, there is no SPI or named account associated with this. In my opinion, all of this individual's edits should be reverted on sight. -- Ed (Edgar181) 08:21, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
    @Salvidrim!: FYI. -- Ed (Edgar181) 08:21, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

    Organic Chemistry

Is formic acid still the IUPAC name because my 2014 wade book says that the only iupac name is methanoic acid? Adwctamia (talk) 14:54, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

"Formic acid" is one of the few non-systematic names that has been retained in IUPAC nomenclature. I am not aware of any recent change favoring "methanoic acid". -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:59, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
This page [2] here on wikipedia uses this site as its reference. Does the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry put out a semi-regular list of official names? (nothing is found on their website) So I'm just stuck questioning why my chemistry book would make such a dubious statement if it is easily demonstrably false? Adwctamia (talk) 14:35, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
If I recall correctly, IUPAC's published list of recommendations is not updated often - looking at their website I see updates in 1979, 1993, and 2013. As for your chemistry text book, I don't know what to tell you other than this may be a good lesson that textbooks are not infallible. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:53, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
You're absolutely right. Textbooks are created by humans and even "infallible" humans make mistakes (whether we admit it or not). My perception of reality is once again "smooth enough" (relative to cognitive dissonance) for me to forget about this "red flag" which is obviously kinda weird that a textbook would factually state a false, disprovable claim but I've learned in life it is better not to get caught up on trivial, inconsequential discrepancies which have absolutely zero impact upon your life unless you choose to get sucked into the rabbit hole. Better, instead, is to not sweat the petty stuff and worry instead about vaster problems like world peace, global warming, and the fact our sun will run out of hydrogen and swell in size until it swallows the earth. Not only that but one of my co-workers parks over the line at the parking garage and makes it very difficult for other cars to park beside him! As if I didn't have enough things already to worry about >_< Adwctamia (talk) 12:00, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

    AfD Monita Chatterjee

Hello. I am here to discuss the possibility of restoring the article entitled Monita Chatterjee. During the AfD discussion [3], User:Xxanthippe discovered "this female scientist has a GS h-index of 21, which just passes WP:Prof#C1 in the relatively high-cited field of BioMed" [4].

First, as can be seen, Monita Chatterjee is doing well in a field that apparently has high citation rates. I think this shows the high bar that she has achieved. It also connotes that maybe she has made a significant impact in her field. Second, I know from experience on Wikipedia that User:Xxanthippe consistently maintains high editing standards that are in agreement with Wikipedia policies and guidelines regarding editing on Wikipedia. So, based on their comment in the AfD, I am surprised that this AfD was closed so quickly.

Normally, I am in agreement with closing AfDs as quickly as possible when there is no information pointing to notability of the subject and the AfD just goes on and on. However, in this instance, I think the AfD should have been given more time because I believe that User:Xxanthippe was on to something that is worth looking into. Also, as I am writing this, I am realizing that perhaps simply reopening the AfD discussion for a longer period could lead to a more effective outcome. So, as the closing Admin, it is up to you to decide what you want to do. Thanks for your time.

By the way, in the spirit of full disclosure, User:Xxanthippe and I have been discussing this on his talk page (see here: [5]} Regards ---Steve Quinn (talk) 02:57, 9 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand the argument about working in a field with high citation rates. If citation rates are high, then someone with little notability might appear to be more impactful than they really are by having their work more highly cited than they would be if they worked in another field - essentially resulting in a misleadingly inflated h-index. In any case, I realize this is a borderline case and reasonable people can disagree. Your suggestion of reopening the discussion for further input seems like the ideal solution here, so I have done so. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:42, 9 July 2016 (UTC)
Excellent. Thanks. We'll see how it goes. And I will take under advisement the observation that a researcher's high citation rates in a field that has high citations could lead to misleadingly inflated h-index rendering them as having more impact than is actually the case. ---Steve Quinn (talk) 03:04, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

    New question for CAS number

    Hi,
The same question like for twistane but this time for usnic acid. I know :

    • acide usnique, numéro CAS 125-46-2 , racémique
      • acide (+)-usnique, numéro CAS 7562-61-0
      • acide (–)-usnique, numéro CAS ???

So the (–)-usnic acid, have it a CAS number ? and what is the absolut configuration of (+)- and (–)-usnic acid ? thanks for your help --Titou (talk) 11:56, 16 July 2016 (UTC)

    I will take a look on Monday. -- Ed (Edgar181) 10:46, 17 July 2016 (UTC)
@The Titou: Here is what Chemical Abstracts has for (-)-usnic acid:
    (-)-Usnic acid; CAS#6159-66-6; (9bS)-2,6-Diacetyl-7,9-dihydroxy-8,9b-dimethyl-1,3(2H,9bH)-dibenzofurandione
And (+)-usnic acid is the (R)-enantiomer. The rest matches what you have provided. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:13, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
Super good ! thanks a lot - but I forget another little question about this molecule which is described too with D and L descriptors. So could you find the relations between :
    and
    • D-usnic acid
    • L-usnic acid
I hope it isn't to difficult to find !! --Titou (talk) 13:06, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
A search on "D-usnic acid" returns the (R)-enantiomer and "L-usnic acid" returns the (S)-enantiomer, but those terms are not explicitly listed as synonyms. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:06, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
    thanks a lot !!!! --Titou (talk) 07:27, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

    Why

Recently I started an article on Paulin Edou Edou and you deleted the page without advancing any reason. Why?????? Aminou 10:15, 28 July 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by AminouT (talkcontribs)

I did give a reason. As the deletion log states, I deleted Paulin Edou Edou because it was a cross-namespace redirect. What that means is that there was no actual article at that title. Instead it was a redirect to Draft:Paulin Edou Edou. Such redirects are considered inappropriate and they are routinely deleted. It appears that the user named User:Eat me, I'm an azuki moved the article to change it to a draft. If you have questions about why it was moved, you can contact him. -- Ed (Edgar181) 11:54, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

William Perry Woods and the Founding of Lions Club Page Deletion Tag

Hello! I understand that there was some confusion with the page I have been editing. I am being paid to do this work (this is disclosed) but the client somehow found the draft online and was confused and thought it had been published and wanted it taken down. I deleted the whole thing and saved it because I had a draft on my computer and so she wouldn't get more upset. Would you be able to remove the deletion tag? We should have it back up after talking to the client today. Thanks! Jodi IBJ BookPub (talk) 12:57, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. I deleted the article William Perry Woods and Founding of Lions Clubs International because its entire contents were "test", nothing more. If you are asking about the draft article Draft:William Perry Woods and The Founding of the International Lions Clubs, it hasn't been deleted and there is no deletion tag on it. You have removed the content from it, but you can still access the previous content via the "History" tab. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:18, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Sorry for the misunderstanding! Thank you so much for your help. Jodi IBJ BookPub (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 13:06, 1 August 2016 (UTC)

    Video game-reverting IP

Remember 86.187.165.17 and 86.187.160.100 reverting a bunch of video game edits that were removing gamecruft with the edit summary "r v v"? Well, they're back at it as 86.187.167.23. I figured since you had blocked the other two that you should probably do the same for this IP. Zappa24Mati 18:28, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

I reverted and blocked. Thanks for letting me know. -- Ed (Edgar181) 18:29, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
Looks like they're back again as 86.187.161.157. I've submitted a protection request for ATV Offroad Fury 2 in the meantime. Zappa24Mati 20:39, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
A range block wide enough to cover all the IPs looks like it would have too much collateral damage. It's a major British ISP. However, I have applied a few narrow range blocks. I suspect it may not help too much though. We may just be playing whack-a-mole for a little while. Make the necessary reports to AIV, RFPP, and to me if it looks like I'm around. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:27, 29 July 2016 (UTC)
I have semi-protected a couple of the targeted pages for a couple of days too. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:31, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

    Single-Malt Scotch Whisky

    G'day Sir:

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, insofar as I am new to this entire Wiki-edit world. So, I simply chose to contact you because you were the last poster on the Scotch page.

Specifically, being a Scotch fan, I noticed that Dalwhinnie is listed as a Speyside when, in reality, it is a Highland (indeed, Dalwhinnie touts itself as being the HIGHEST distillery in the highlands). Anyhow, to the point - how does one go about fixing an entry in Wikipedia if the entry is incorrect?

Thank you kindly for pointing me in the right direction or, in the alternative, fixing the error on Wiki. You are welcome to take the credit for the fix, should you agree that Dalwhinnie is a Highland and not a Speyside.

    Cheers.

Sam prof.sam.han@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:304:CF32:AFB0:F85C:9462:AB65:3617 (talk) 20:14, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

I can't say I know that much about Scotch, so I'd suggest that you simply make your desired change to the article yourself. It should be no more difficult than leaving me a message here. Simply click the "Edit this page" button at the top of the page that you want to edit and then make the changes you think are required. In the box for the "Edit summary" just leave a brief description of why you made the change. Also, you may find the information at Help:Getting started helpful. I do not agree with the deletion of my article: CAMILO FERNANDEZ", I work for the Ministerynof housing, land territory, of Colombia, it's very important for my, for the Colombian community abroad and for the legal and Colombian general audit and control organizations to have my skills and history disclosure publicly. Actually in general locks like your resume. Please advise, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Luiscamilofdz (talkcontribs) 04:50, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

With all due respect, but we have rules over notability, and since you mentioned about working on behalf of the Colombian government, that would constitute conflict of interest. Blake Gripling (talk) 05:59, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
I agree with Blake Gripling. First of all, the article was written entirely in Spanish and this is an English language encyclopedia, so it would need to be rewritten in English. Secondly, the biography appears to be about an individual who does not meet Wikipedia's notability criteria for inclusion (see WP:BIO) and did not make any assertion of notability and therefore met criteria for speedy deletion (see WP:CSD#A7). Finally, the article was written entirely in the standard form of a resume, not as a biography or encyclopedia article, and therefore came across as entirely promotional. -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:30, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
And in that case, a better venue for such things would be Linkedin or a general-purpose web host where you can do a personal portfolio, e.g. Wix.com or Squarespace. Wikipedia does allow and encourage everyone to contribute to the project, but remember this is an encyclopedia and not a free-for-all soapbox for promotion. I know you meant well with what you did, but we have rules here. Blake Gripling (talk) 13:02, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

    Dorothy Rungeling Deletion

The Dorothy Rungeling page was created by the Brock University Special Collections and Archives department, but was deleted. The concern was copyright infringement of the jpeg used for the page. The photograph is part of the collection donated to the Brock University Library by Dorothy Rungeling and used by the Brock University Library. This is new to us, so is there something we need to do to have the page re-posted?Sir Isaac Digitized (talk) 16:35, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

My deletion of the page Dorothy Rungeling was not related to an image. User:Diannaa marked the page for deletion, noting the text was taken from the following website: http://dr.library.brocku.ca/handle/10464/6175. Indeed, every sentence of text in the article matched text nearly word-for-word that can be found on that webpage. Since the Brock University page is marked "Copyright © 2006-2015" at the bottom of the page, Wikipedia cannot copy it. Such copyright violations are routinely deleted according to Wikipedia policy (see WP:COPYVIO for details). If the page is to be recreated, it must be rewritten in one's own words. However, you might find this page helpful, if it applies: Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. -- Ed (Edgar181) 17:18, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

Just so I understand, I need to re-write this page in order for it to be posted on wikipedia, even if I wrote the original for our institution (they must be different) or it needs to be referenced to Brock University? Thank you for clarifying why this was deleted.Sir Isaac Digitized (talk) 20:29, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

I can't give you a definitive answer without knowing all the details, but from what I understand it doesn't matter if you were the individual who wrote the text because the university is claiming the copyright on that text. Wikipedia can't use it without permission from the university and just referencing the university webpage would be insufficient. -- Ed (Edgar181) 21:03, 9 August 2016 (UTC)

    Hello Edgar,

I had previously asked if you could add a chem box to the BMS-955176, but the chemical structure hadn't been published yet, but now it has, so could you do that please? I would do it but don't have your expertise :)

The link containing that structure's image is at http://www.informedhorizons.com/resistance2016/pdf/Presentations/Dicker.pdf

Also, a less technical favor, could you please help me add a viral structure graphic to the HTLV page please? Seems like I don't know how to do that, there are many such diagrams available on the public domain.

The link containing that structure's image is at http://clinicalgate.com/human-immunodeficiency-virus-disease-aids-and-related-disorders/

Thanks in advance for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by TonyDewitt (talkcontribs) 20:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

OK, I have added a chemical structure image to BMS-955176. As for the question about the viral structure graphic, I don't know which image at the link you are referring to. If you are sure the image you are interested in is in the public domain (it's not clear to me that it is, looking at that page) then you can upload it yourself using Upload Wizard. -- Ed (Edgar181) 20:48, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Regarding the claims related to medical benefits of erythrose, secondary sources such as review articles and/or reports of clinical efficacy in humans are needed to support these claims.
