Changed the plot summary in the opening paragraph as it was slightly too spoilery - realistically, no opening paragraph summary should include the word 'finally'.

Phantom Thread is a 2017 American drama film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, set in London's couture world in the 1950s. It stars Daniel Day-Lewis as a dressmaker living with his sister, played by Lesley Manville. He falls in love with a young waitress, played by Vicky Krieps; the couple's relationship vacillates between affection and distance as they struggle to live with each other's differences.[6] The film was Day-Lewis's final film role before entering retirement.[7]

The film is Anderson's first shot outside the United States, with principal photography beginning in January 2017 in Lythe, England. It is his second collaboration with Day-Lewis, following There Will Be Blood (2007), and his fourth with composer Jonny Greenwood.

The film premiered in New York City on December 11, 2017, and was released in the United States on December 25, 2017.[8] Phantom Thread received critical acclaim, with praise for Day-Lewis's performance, Anderson's screenplay and direction, the musical score, and production value; it was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of 2017's top ten films.[9] At the 90th Academy Awards, the film earned six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Day-Lewis, and Supporting Actress for Manville. It also received two Golden Globe nominations: Best Actor – Drama (Day-Lewis) and Best Original Score,[10] as well as four at the 71st British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor in a Leading Role for Day-Lewis, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Manville, and Best Film Music for Greenwood.[11]

Plot

In 1950s London, renowned fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock creates dresses and garments for members of high society. His charisma and genius is matched by his obsessive, controlling personality. Cyril, his sister, manages the day-to-day operations of his luxury fashion house and has significant influence over his life. Reynolds is haunted by the death of their mother, and stitches hidden messages into the linings of the dresses he makes.

After debuting a new piece for one of his clients, Reynolds visits a restaurant in the countryside and becomes interested in a waitress named Alma. He asks her out on a date, and she accepts. Their relationship develops, and she soon moves in with him and acts as his muse, assistant, and love interest. Cyril is initially distrustful of Alma but eventually gains respect for her willfulness and determination.

At first, Alma enjoys being a part of his creativity and seeing him work, but Reynolds proves hard to please. They bicker constantly; when Alma attempts to make him a romantic dinner, Reynolds lashes out over how the meal is prepared and repeats to her that he will not tolerate any deviations from the daily routines that he has worked hard at perfecting.

Wanting to regain her power in their relationship, Alma decides to poison his tea with some wild mushroom shavings she has gathered outside the house. As he readies a wedding gown for a Belgian princess, Reynolds becomes gravely ill and later hallucinates the ghost of his mother, but Alma takes care of him. He soon recovers, finds himself deeply moved by Alma’s devotion and asks her to marry him. She initially hesitates but agrees to marry.

The relationship goes well at first but soon devolves back to a pattern of bickering and fighting. As Reynolds feels his work severely affected by Alma's presence and their marriage, he concludes it may be time to send her away. Alma responds by poisoning his omelette, but this time Reynolds deduces what she has done. She informs him that she wants him to be weak and vulnerable so she can take care of him and help lower his defensive nature. Reynolds accepts the idea and bites into the food, submitting to his dark love for her. As he lays sick, Alma imagines their future with children, a rich social life, and her running the dressmaking business as a partner. She acknowledges that while there may be challenges ahead, their love for each other and their new arrangement can overcome them.

Cast

Production

On June 2, 2016, it was announced that Paul Thomas Anderson would write and direct a fashion drama film set in the 1950s, with Daniel Day-Lewis attached as star.[12] Megan Ellison would produce the film through Annapurna Pictures, along with JoAnne Sellar and Anderson.[12][15] On September 8, 2016, the film was picked up by Focus Features stateside and Universal Pictures internationally.[16] In late January 2017, Lesley Manville, Richard Graham, and Vicky Krieps were cast.[14][13] Anderson became interested in the fashion industry by reading about designer Cristóbal Balenciaga,[17] and the story is loosely modeled on the British fashion designer Charles James.[18]

Principal photography began in late January 2017 in Lythe, United Kingdom[19][15] with a number of other locations in the North York Moors National Park also featuring, including Robin Hood's Bay and Staithes.[20]

Daniel Day-Lewis drives a maroon Bristol 405 around Whitby (Yorkshire). [21] Filming also took place in 2017 at Owlpen Manor in the Cotswolds[22] and in the London neighborhood of Fitzrovia, in Fitzroy Square, and Grafton Mews.[23]

It was reported in June 2017 that Anderson would be serving as his own cinematographer on the film as Robert Elswit was unavailable during production.[24] However, Anderson refuted the claim in November, stating that there is no official credit for the cinematography and that it was a "collaborative effort".[17]

Reception

Box office

As of February 4, 2018, Phantom Thread has grossed $14.2 million in the United States and Canada, and $3.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $17.4 million, against a production budget of $30 million.[5]

After three weeks in limited release where it made a total of $2.8 million, the film was added to 834 theaters on January 19, 2018 (for a total of 896) and grossed $3.8 million over the weekend, finishing 12th at the box office.[25] The following weekend, following the announcement of its six Oscar nominations and being added to an additional 125 theaters, the film dropped 11% to $2.9 million.[26]

Critical response

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 91% based on 212 reviews, and an average rating of 8.4/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Phantom Thread's finely woven narrative is filled out nicely by humor, intoxicating romantic tension, and yet another impressively committed performance from Daniel Day-Lewis."[27] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 90 out of 100 based on 50 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[28]

The A.V. Club's A.A. Dowd gave the film an A−, calling it a "charitable and even poignantly hopeful take on the subject [of being in a relationship with an artist]" and said that "in the simple, refined timelessness of its technique, Phantom Thread is practically a love letter to classic aesthetic values—cinematic, sartorial, or otherwise".[18]
