Park Soo-young (born September 3, 1996),[1][4] known by the stage name Joy, is a South Korean singer and actress. She is a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet.[5] Aside from group activities, Joy has also starred in various television dramas such as The Liar and His Lover (2017) and Tempted (2018).

Early life

Park Soo-young was born in Jeju Island, South Korea. Her family then moved to Dobong District, Seoul after just one month. Her family consists of her parents and two younger sisters, Park Ji-yeong and Park Min-ji.[2] As a child, Joy was interested in modern trot music.[6] In grade school, she was influenced to become a singer after receiving praise for her rendition of Korean rock band Cherry Filter's song Flying Duck.[7][8] Joy auditioned and was cast by SM Entertainment at the S.M. Global Audition in Seoul in 2012. She trained under the agency for two years, during which time a vocal coach gave her the stage name "Joy."[1]

Life and career

Joy was introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet on July 29, 2014.[9][10] She is the only member of the group who was not introduced as a part of SM Rookies before the group's debut. The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014.[11] Since 2014, the group has released six EPs and two studio albums.

2015–present: Solo activities

In 2015, Joy joined the fourth season of reality show We Got Married, where she appeared opposite BtoB member Yook Sung-jae.[12] She received significant recognition for her participation in the popular TV program and featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics.[13] On December 29, 2015, Joy shared a win with Yook for the Best Couple Award and separately won the New Star Award at the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards.[14]

Following group promotions for Red Velvet's second mini album The Velvet, Joy released a duet with Yook on April 16, 2016 entitled "Young Love". The song peaked at #52 on the Gaon Singles Chart.[15][16] Departing from We Got Married on May 7, they became known as one of the longest-running and most popular couples in the show's recent history.[17][18][19] Over the course of We Got Married airing, their videos together on YouTube accumulated over 21.3 million views.[20][21][22]

In mid 2016, S.M. Entertainment issued an official photo series for Joy, released once a week via the Vyrl mobile app and SM Town Now. It is entitled Enjoy your Monday with Joy.[23][24] Joy collaborated with Lim Seul-ong in a duet titled "Always In My Heart", a project song under S.M. Entertainment's SM Station released on November 4, 2016.[25][26] The song achieved an overall ranking of #2 on the Instiz iChart[27], reached #2 on Soribada, Genie and Bugs streaming charts,[28] and #10 on Gaon.[29]

Joy made her acting debut as the female lead in tvN's music drama The Liar and His Lover (2017) alongside Lee Hyun-woo.[30][31] It is the Korean television adaptation of Kotomi Aoki's popular manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru.[32][33] Joy featured in several OST releases for the drama including Yeowooya, I'm Okay, Your Days, Shiny Boy, Waiting For You, and The Way To Me, and won a Newcomer Award at the OSEN Cable TV Awards.[34] In July 2017, Joy appeared on King of Mask Singer where she won her first round of the singing competition program and performed under the alias of Bandabi.[35]

In 2018, Joy joined the second season of JTBC variety show Sugar Man as a co-host alongside Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Park Na-rae.[36] In 2018, Joy was also cast as the female lead alongside actor Woo Do-hwan in the MBC drama Tempted. In the drama, loosely based on the French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, Joy portrays a character who has witnessed the demise of her parents marriage and now believes that people who are swayed by love are pathetic.[37][38][39] Joy also released an OST for the drama titled "Nonsense", and was nominated for the Popularity Award (Drama Actress Category) at The Seoul Awards.[40] Filming of this drama caused her to miss the Spring is Coming concert in North Korea in April 2018.[41]

Just in time for Red Velvet's summer mini album Summer Magic, Joy graced Nylon Korea's August 2018 issue cover.[42] Joy was also named as the new model for Fitz Super Clear Beer together with her former We Got Married partner Yook.[43] Shortly after, Joy was chosen as one of the hosts of Lifetime's new variety show Pajama Friends, alongside Song Ji-hyo, Jang Yoon-ju, and Cheng Xiao.[44] In October 2018, Joy released the song "Dream Me" (with NCT's Mark) for the soundtrack of the KBS drama The Ghost Detective.

Personal life

In February 2015, Joy graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul.[45]
