The Widow is a British television drama series created and written by Harry and Jack Williams, airing on both British ITV and American streaming service Amazon Video, with the latter also carrying the series internationally. The film stars Kate Beckinsale as an Englishwoman who believes her husband, killed in a plane crash three years prior, is still alive in the Congo.[1][2][3] A first trailer was released in mid-January 2019.[4] The show was released on Amazon Prime Video on March 1, 2019.[5]
Premise
The series follows Georgia Wells (Kate Beckinsale), the eponymous widow whose husband Will died in a plane crash on a trip to Africa.[6] Three years after Will's death, she sees a man resembling her husband on a news story reporting civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Suspecting that everything is not what it seems, Wells travels to Kinshasa to uncover the truth.[7] She starts to look for answers particularly concerned with the reason why her husband – she believes – faked his own death.
The eight-episode series also featured multiple story lines and explored themes such as violence and corruption.[8]
Production
The Widow is a co-production of British ITV and Amazon Video.[9] It was filmed in South Africa, Wales, and Rotterdam. It was reported that the heat in some of the film's locations became difficult for Beckinsale, who was hospitalized after passing out while shooting a scene.[6] Casting included a diverse roster of international actors.[10][11]
