Butterbean's Café is an American-Irish animated fantasy television series created by Jonny Belt and Robert Scull, the creators of Bubble Guppies,[1] ordered by Nickelodeon. The series follows Butterbean, a fairy who runs a neighborhood café with her friends. The series involves "creative cooking, a farm-to-table philosophy, and a social-emotional curriculum that focuses on leadership skills". A total of 40 episodes have been ordered.[2][3] The series premiered on November 12, 2018.[4]

On June 4, 2019, the series was renewed for a second season.[5] The series moved to the Nick Jr. channel as of August 25, 2019.

Premise

Butterbean's Café is set in the magical land of Puddlebrook and follows its title character, Butterbean, a young fairy who opens up and works in her own café, with the help of sister Cricket and friends Poppy, Dazzle, and Jasper. The patrons of the café consists of anthropomorphic chipmunks and rabbits. Next to the café is grumpy Ms. Marmalady, who plots to put Butterbean out of business, only to fail every time. There is a running gag where a character (which the episode varies and mostly centers around on) breaks the fourth wall by talking to the viewer in a documentary style confession where they explain the various situations happening at the moment.

Characters

  • Butterbean (voiced by Margaret Ying Drake in US and Lily Wilmott in UK), a fairy with light skin, dark blue eyes and brunette hair who opens and works at her own café. Her signature color is blue, and her symbol is a bean. Her cooking tool is a whisk.
  • Cricket (voiced by Gabriella Pizzolo[6] in US and Alisia-Mai Goscomb in UK), Butterbean's younger sister with light skin, light blue eyes and blonde hair in two pigtails. Her signature color is pink, and her symbol is a heart. Her cooking tool is an icing bag. She was mostly used in the song "Let's Get Coookin'" in the sentence, "Grab a cup of friendship". In "The Towering Tower of Crepes!" it is mentioned she is 6 years old.
  • Poppy (voiced by Kirrilee Berger[7] in US and Amelie Halls in UK), Butterbean's bespectacled friend with light skin, green eyes and red hair in a ponytail, who runs the kitchen. Her signature color is orange, and her symbol is a flower. Her cooking tool is a kitchen spoon.
  • Dazzle (voiced by Olivia Grace Manning in US and Imogen Sharp in UK), Butterbean's friend with dark skin, brown eyes and purple hair in two curly buns, who runs the café's front counter and cash register. Her signature color is purple, and her symbol is a star. Her cooking tool is a stylus.
  • Jasper (voiced by Koda Gursoy in the US and Eric O'Carroll in the UK), the delivery boy with light skin, brown eyes and blue hair, who supplies the café with fresh ingredients. Originally a wingless fairy, he developed wings upon joining Butterbean's crew. His signature colors are blue and green, and his symbol is a lightning bolt. He's the only one of the Bean Team without a cooking tool, but in "The Towering Tower of Crepes!", he received a spatula from Chef Belle Legume.
  • Cookie is a winged, flying cat who lives in Butterbean's Cafe. She is owned by Cricket. She is playful cat and sometimes gets into trouble by hiding in unexpected places.
  • Ms. Marmalady (voiced by Alysia Reiner in US and Judy Emmett in UK), an older fairy with pale skin, brown eyes and blonde hair in a bun, who is Butterbean's foil. Because she and her workers produce sub-par products, her café hardly get customers. Her café was originally the only restaurant in Puddlebrook until Butterbean opened hers, thus she is jealous of Butterbean and wants to put hers out of business, but her schemes always fail. However, she does show her soft side at times, such as in "The Sugar Plum Fairy!". She adopts a cat named Marzipan.
  • Spork and Spatch (both voiced by Chris Phillips in US and both voiced by Mike Cross in UK), Ms. Marmalady's bumbling monkey employees who are interested in the food Butterbean is making, much to the dismay of Ms. Marmalady. Spork is more obese and has orange fur, while Spatch is thinner and has tan fur. Though they would do Ms. Marmalady's schemes, they would also sometimes serve somewhat as her conscience.
