Both schools are of limited size, with a maximum of 120 pupils accepted into each grade. The Sydney Morning Herald ranked HGHS as 3rd in the state (4th in 2004) and the top girls' school in English results, and 6th in the state (9th in 2004) and the 2nd girls' school in Mathematics results.

School Motto: "Faith With Fortitude"

The School motto was chosen in the foundation year of Hornsby Girls' High School, 1931.

Writing in "The Torch" the first headmistress, Miss A. A. Brewster, pointed out that although on the surface the motto might appear to suggest "sorrow and martyrdom", it has a much deeper meaning.[citation needed]
