Manjappada Kerala Blasters Fans or simply known as Manjappada (Malayalam pronunciation: [maɲɲappaʈa] ) (English: The Yellow Army) are the organised supporters group of the Kochi based club Kerala Blasters FC which competes in the Indian Super League, a top tier of Indian football.[3] They are one of the largest and most active fan group in the Indian Super League.[4]

Manjappada won the Indian Sports Honours's "Fan Club of the Year" award in 2017 and 2020.[5][6][7] They were also awarded by 2019 Asian Cup Organising Committee for their support for the India national football team at the 2019 AFC Asian Cup UAE.[8] Manjappada have wings in all of the 14 districts of Kerala and in 12 other states of India. Keralites residing in 44 other countries are also a part of the club.[9] The players and the coaches have always acknowledged their support and call them as The 12th Man.[10][11]

History

Manjappada was founded on 27 May 2014, through a Facebook page by three founding members. Kerala Blasters had an average attendance of 49,000 during the inaugural season of the Indian Super League.[12] By 2015, Manjappada started to co-ordinate more fans under one umbrella.[13][14] The group played an important role of supporting the club during the 2015 ISL Season despite the team's poor performance in the league.[15] During the 2015 season, the Blasters recorded an average attendance of 52,000, which is still the highest in the ISL's history. Most of the games had an attendance of more than 60,000.[16][17]

By 2016, Manjappada became more organised and expanded through a WhatsApp group initially consisting of 50 members.[18] Fans from across Kerala were connected through Whatsapp, which led to the founding of state chapters across India. Keralites residing in 44 other countries joined the fan club and are active in the international groups.[19][20] Because of this, Manjappada also has one of the largest travelling fan bases in the country.[21] By 2018, they had evolved into an ultras group and started to use flares and smoke effects during matches.[22][23][24] One of their organised efforts was witnessed when Manjappada members from across Kerala arrived at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in 41 buses for the 2019 season opener against ATK on 20 October 2019.[25][26][27]

The group are committed to wearing as much yellow as possible including scarves and around 150 flags are employed for each game.[28] The members begins their preparations almost a month before the season.[29] A meeting is conducted across each of their respective wings to discuss with the members, about the group's main activities for the season.[30] The activities begins itself from welcoming the team in the airport.[31] The group often conduct roadshows during their important home matches.[32] Before every match, its members arrive at the stadium early and set up tifos, banners, and balloons.[33] Manjappada has men who take charge and organize their well famous mexican waves, flashlights and viking claps.[34] Since 2016, as a part of the Clean India Mission, the group started to clean the stadium after every match.[35] The same year, they also released their official theme song which was sung by the actor and lyricist Shabareesh Varma.[36] Manjappada has an active social media presence which brings about the latest updates and previews of Kerala Blasters' games to its fans.[37] Due to the presence of Malayalis all across the world, Manjappada members are present wherever the Blasters goes. One such main incident took place when the Blasters played their pre-season friendly against Dibba FC in Dubai, where the Manjappada members were present in large numbers to support the team.[38]

Chants and tifos

Dale Dale Dale Ohh, to the land of football, is to where God came, he gave us a club, gave it life, gave us hope, we are the famous, Kerala Blasters, let’s come together for the fight, to win it.

—The official anthem of Manjappada[39]

Manjappada has displayed various tifos at games.[40] The most famous tifo was displayed during the 2018-19 season opener against Mumbai City on 5 October 2018; it read "In Unity Lies Our Greatness" and was a tribute to fishermen who saved thousands of lives during 2018 Kerala floods.[41] The following year, Manjappada unveiled another tifo displaying "Rise Like A Phoenix" during the season opener against ATK on 20 October 2019.[42]
