Shaiju Damodaran (Born 23 May 1973) is an Indian sports commentator, sports journalist and columnist. Currently, Shaiju works as the leading malayalam commentator for Star network (malayalam) on their Indian Super League coverage. So far, he has completed as a commentator in more than 350 matches in Indian Super League, which is the highest by any commentators in any language in the Indian Super League.[1][2]

Early life

Shaiju Damodaran is the son of A I Damodaran and Lalitha Damodaran. He attended high school at SCHS, Ochanthiruth and completed his Pre-degree from Cochin College, Kochi. After that, he joined St. Paul's College, Kalamassery to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Later, Shaiju completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the Kerala Media Academy, Kochi.

Career

Journalism

Shaiju started his journalism career at Mathrubhumi, Kochi as a Journalist specialized in Cricket and Football in 1995 and later became their Senior Sub Editor.[3] After working for 20 years, he resigned from Mathrbhumi to join as a Special Correspondent with Mangalam, Kochi in 2015. Shaiju's notable works as a sports journalist include coverage of 10 Santhosh Trophy National Football Championships, more than 200 Indian Super League Matches, National and International level Cricket Matches including Ranji Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Duleep Trophy. Also, he has covered all the One Day International Cricket Matches that happened in Kochi.

Commentator

Shaiju started his career as a commentator in 2012 by commentating for the matches at the 2012 season of Celebrity Cricket League. He did the commentary for CCL for the next two seasons also that gave him a breakthrough as a commentator. He was chosen as the leading commentator in Malayalam for the inaugural season of the Indian Super League.[4] Ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, star network decided to include Malayalam commentary and Shaiju was roped in as the leading commentator.[5] In 2017, he became the first person to complete 200 matches as a commentator in ISL.[6] In the same year, he did the commentary for ICC Champions Trophy 2017's final match between India and Pakistan. In 2018, SONY ESPN roped in Shaiju as the leading Malayalam commentator for the FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia. It was the first time in the history that the Malayalam commentary was included in a FIFA World Cup.[7] During the tournament, Shaiju's commentary during Cristiano Ronaldo’s 87th minute free kick goal against Spain captured the attention of football fans across the globe and became viral on social media.[8][9][10] He later did the Malayalam commentary for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup held at UAE in January 2019. He also did the commentary for India's numerous friendly matches during that period.[11]

Personal life

Shaiju is married to Asha and the couple lives in Kaloor, Kochi with their children Abhinov and Adhinov. [12]
