List of largest cats → List of largest felids – This article is about species of the family Felidae, not about breeds of cats. Georgia guy (talk) 00:29, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Strong oppose, as "cat" is the common name for the family of big cats and small cats. "Felid" is a obscure inside-baseball word almost never heard in casual conversation, and Wikipedia should always default to the most common and most understood name. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:41, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- You mean, the article Felidae should be at Cat and that the Cat article should be at Domestic cat?? Georgia guy (talk) 18:48, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Sadly, yes, as I've tried several times to put the link to the common name descriptor Big cats into the lede descriptor of Cat, and it keeps getting reverted by page sitters. That's all that's needed to keep the page at Cat. The template {{Cats}} is visibly named 'Domestic cats' with a link that goes to 'Cat' , and big cats being kept out of the lede sentences of cats isn't serving the readers as well as the article should. - Support unless Cat actually ever moves. Hyperbolick (talk) 20:55, 20 January 2020 (UTC)
- Support per Georgia_guy and Hyperbolick; that is, per WP:CONSISTENT and WP:PRECISE. We decided a long time ago that "cat" on WP means the domestic sort. While this could be revisited, that should happen via RM of the main articles (Cat and Felidae), not by picking off barely-watched minor articles floating out there around them. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 08:48, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose The meaning is clear enough. All the felidae are cats, even if in some contexts cat is used for the domestic cat. A decision on the name for the domestic cat article doesn't mean use of cat on Wikipedia is restricted to the domestic cat. Should we change the name of the Big cat article? - You mean, you're with User:Randy Kryn in that you think that the Cat article really should be at Domestic cat?? Georgia guy (talk) 12:42, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
- I was commenting solely on the current proposal. I wouldn't support moving the cat article. The domestic cat is referred to as a cat by most people most of the time and I think it likely that anyone putting cat in the search box means the domestic cat. Even if it was moved to the more unambiguous name there would be a case for redirecting cat there as I think that is what the vast majority of readers would expect. We have to accept that term cat is used in different senses in different contexts. I don't think people seeing list of largest cats would be expecting a list of big domestic cats. - Look at the image just before the start of the prose at https://www.nationalgeographic.com.au/animals/5-ways-your-tabby-is-just-like-big-cats-in-the-wild.aspx. Which of the following statements makes more sense??
- The animal on the left is a cat; the animal on the right is a tiger.
- The animal on the left is a domestic cat; the animal on the right is a cat.
- Georgia guy (talk) 13:32, 21 January 2020 (UTC
- The most accurate description would be "the animal on the left is a house cat; the animal on the right is a tiger. Both are cats." Without context, "cat" will almost always be understood to mean "house cat" (aka "domestic cat"). --Khajidha (talk) 16:36, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- That's a strawman. You know very well that, in that context, both options are bad (and the video on the page you linked to smartly uses option #3 with its title "House Cats And Big Cats Hunt The Same"). No one is arguing that domestic cats or big cats aren't cats. --Ahecht (TALK

- Support - as a bare list title absent of any context, the phrase "list of largest cats" is most naturally understood to only refer to house cats. --Khajidha (talk) 16:36, 22 January 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose Per Khajidha, most people coming to this page would expect that a list of large cats would include big cats. They would've be expecting just housecats or heavy machinery. What article is located at Cat is irrelevant for this discussion, but for the record I would support moving Cat to either Domestic cat or House cat and moving Felidae to Cat. --Ahecht (TALK
