Mandy Wong Chi-man (born 21 December 1982) is a Hong Kong television actress.
Wong began her acting career by participating in the Miss Hong Kong 2007 beauty pageant, where she was placed among the top 5 finalists.[1] She joined TVB in the same year and graduated from TVB's acting class in 2008. Wong debuted with a brief appearance in TVB's 2007 sitcom Best Selling Secrets. She later gained recognition in the 2010 romantic drama Suspects in Love, and has achieved wider fame for her performance in 2012 dramas L'Escargot and The Hippocratic Crush, winning the Most Improved Female Artiste in TVB Anniversary Awards in 2012.
In 2018, Wong earned critical acclaim for her performance in the legal comedy Threesome. She played Evie Fong Yee-yan, a barrister with dissociative identity disorder, along with the other two split personalities, Piña Colada and Sau Mak Mak, winning My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role in both Malaysia and Singapore in 2018 TVB 51st Anniversary Gala.
Early life
Born in Hong Kong, Mandy Wong was raised in a single-parent household and was graduated from Cognitio College (Kowloon). She has an elder sister, Cathy Wong, a former English language specialist at King's Glory Education Centre. Her mother is the owner of a cosmetics boutique in Wan Chai.[2]
Career
As a former graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,[3][4] Wong worked as a flight attendant for three years before participating in the Miss Hong Kong 2007 beauty pageant, in which she was placed among the top 5 finalists. Wong signed an artiste contract with TVB and her television debut came that same year with an uncredited appearance in the sitcom Best Selling Secrets. She graduated from TVB's acting class in 2008.
After two years of appearing in dramas as minor supporting roles, Wong gained broader public attention with her supporting role in the 2009 comedy drama A Chip Off the Old Block. She played So Fung-lin, the bespectacled younger sister of Myolie Wu's character, So Fung-nei. Her performance was positively received by both critics and netizens. Impressed with her character portrayal, producer Poon Ka-tak cast Wong to portray the timid younger sister of Flora Chan's character in the 2010 romantic comedy drama Suspects in Love. To prepare for her role, Wong studied Maggie Cheung's performance in Police Cadet '84.
In 2012, Wong’s popularity rose and was highly praised by netizens for her role as Lau Siu-lan in the family drama L'Escargot as the overbearing wife of Oscar Leung's character. In the same year, she starred in the medical drama The Hippocratic Crush as Dr. Hung Mei-suet, which was her first second female leading role. Wong won My Favourite Promising Actress in MY AOD Favourites Awards and Most Improved Female Artiste in 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards.
Wong continued playing second female leading roles in 2013. She starred in the romance drama Always and Ever as the younger sister of Esther Kwan's character. Again, her villainous role was highly praised by the netizens and producer. Through the sequel The Hippocratic Crush II, Wong reprised her role as Dr. Hung Mei-suet, gaining her first character nomination for TVB Anniversary Awards. She won Most Improved Female Artiste in Singapore StarHub TVB Awards and won one of the Top 15 Characters in TVB Star Awards Malaysia.
In 2015, Wong played her first female leading role as Lui Lui in the crime drama The Fixer, gaining positive reviews from viewers and won one of the Top 16 My Favourite TVB Characters in TVB Star Awards Malaysia. In the same year, she starred in her first ancient drama Captain of Destiny as a cunning prostitute, pairing up with Joel Chan.
Following her first female leading role, Wong starred in the family drama Daddy Dearest as the first female lead again in 2016, alongside Johnson Lee and Jason Chan. In the same year, Wong starred in the legal drama Law dis-Order as an astute lawyer, opposite veterans Alex Fong and Liu Kai Chi. Her performance as Martha Fong Ning earned her positive reviews. She won My Favourite TVB Female Character in the 2016 Singapore StarHub TVB Awards and won one of the Top 15 TVB Drama Characters in the 2016 TVB Star Awards Malaysia with her role as Martha.
In 2017, Wong starred as the first female lead in the crime drama Nothing Special Force, playing Laser Lung Lai-sa, a pregnant cause-of death inspector, for which she won My Favourite TVB Female Character in the 2017 Singapore StarHub TVB Awards. In the same year, she once again starred as the first female lead in the supernatural drama The Exorcist's Meter, playing Dr. Chong Tsz-yeuk, a kind-hearted A&E doctor and a devil named Salvia. Wong playing two characters simultaneously earned her critical acclaim.
In 2018, Wong starred as the first female lead in the legal comedy Threesome, playing a competitive barrister with dissociative identity disorder. She earned critical acclaim from the public with her performance as Evie Fong Yee-yan, along with the other two split personalities, Piña Colada and Sau Mak Mak. Wong became the first TVB artist featured on NASDAQ MarketSite at New York Times Square and was invited as a special guest at the 17th Miss Chinese Beauty Pageant 2018 Final, which was held in August. Her portrayal of Evie earned her My Favourite TVB Actress in a Leading Role in both Malaysia and Singapore at the 2018 TVB 51st Anniversary Gala. In addition, with her role as Evie, Wong won Best Actress in a Leading Role as voted by netizens in People's Choice TV Awards 2018 and Hong Kong Television Awards 2018. She received 1375 votes in People's Choice TV Awards 2018, obtaining over 50% of votes, which greatly outnumbered her opponents.[5]
In 2019, Wong hosted her first reality TV show, Dancing For a Reason, which was filmed in Seoul. In the same year, she starred in the comedy drama My Life As Loan Shark as a passionate social worker, pairing up with Lai Lok-yi and collaborating with veterans Kent Cheng, Kingdom Yuen and Maggie Shiu.
In January 2020, Wong made her stage debut in the stage play Let's Hunt for a "Tiger" Tonight, playing the witty and beautiful Wong Sau-ying.
Wong starred as the first female lead in three dramas in 2020. She starred in the crime drama Brutally Young as Yuen Lai-ken (Madam Yuen), an Inspector of Police from the Regional Crime Unit. Due to her character’s tragic experience, Wong took half a year to withdraw emotionally from her character. In the sequel The Exorcist's 2nd Meter, she reprised her role as Dr. Chong Tsz-yeuk, again opposite Kenneth Ma. With her role as Chong Tsz-yuek, Wong won Best Actress in a Leading Role as voted by netizens in hk01 Television Drama Awards with over 400 votes. In the same year, she starred in the crime drama Line Walker: Bull Fight, playing Cheung Kei-gee (Madam G), a Chief Inspector of Police from the Criminal Intelligence Bureau who has Savant Syndrome and Asperger Syndrome. Wong was praised for her profound portrayal of her character.
In May 2020, Wong was cast in the crime thriller Murder Diary as a police officer from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau, collaborating with Vincent Wong, Benjamin Yuen, Lai Lok-yi, as well as veterans Kara Wai and Philip Keung. During filming, she had to wear a bomb suit weighing over 70 pounds. In October 2020, Wong was cast in the drama The Line Watchers as the first female lead. She played a Chief Trade Controls Officer from the Trade Controls Branch of the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, and pairing up with Benjamin Yuen again.
In May 2021, Wong will star in the stage play Larger Than Life directed by the prominent stage director Tang Shu-wing. She will be playing a charming robot named Chloé.[6]
