Interflug Flight 102, was a 1989 aviation incident involving an Ilyushin IL 62M. The aircraft failed to take off from Berlin Schönefeld Airport, East Germany, and instead crashed at the end of its takeoff roll into obstacles on the ground, resulting in the loss of 21 lives.

Incident

At 6:20 am Berlin time, the aircraft started its four Soloviev D-30KU engines to prepare for departure. Afterward, the unlocking of the flight controls was to happen immediately. According to the cockpit voice recorder (CVR), the crew did not perform this task. The crew did not check the warnings panel of the elevator condition. When the captain was taxiing to the runway, he checked a second time for elevator movement. He failed to notice that the elevators were locked and were unable to move.

The aircraft was cleared for takeoff on runway 25L and the engines were adjusted to the derated power because the airplane had a low weight of 113 tons. At 06:28:05 local time, the aircraft reached the rotation speed (VR). The crew pulled on the yoke, but the plane did not respond. Four seconds later, the captain decided to abort the takeoff. At this moment, the speed of the plane was 293 km/h (182 mph). The flight engineer shut down all four engines, which prevented the use of reverse thrust. The plane was now traveling at 303 km/h (188 mph), 940 m (3,080 ft) from the end of the runway.

The plane overran the runway at 262 kph and was left of the centerline. During the emergency braking, five of the tires on the main landing gear were destroyed. The plane entered a construction pit 40 cm (16 in) deep, causing the main landing gear to collapse. Active steering was not available at this point. It then broke into three pieces, and the airplane caught fire after it hit a water tank, concrete piles of the fence that surrounds the airport, a road embankment and six trees. At 06:28:37 local, the plane slid to a halt.[1][2]

Rescue workers arrived at 6:38, and 82 passengers were rescued in the first 2 minutes from the fuselage. The front part of the fuselage was intact and some the cabin and cockpit crew were able to use the cockpit windows to escape the burning plane. The crew assisted in evacuating the passengers. The flames were extinguished at 8:09. The accident claimed 21 lives; two would die from their injuries at the hospital. Contributing to the crash was the locking of some of the flight controls; whether this was due to a mechanical issue or the crew missing a step could not be proved.[2]

Aftermath

All Interflug Il-62s were temporarily grounded. Nine of Interflug's remaining 11 Il-62s were cleared the day after the crash.[1]
