Request

I request for you to restore McAfee didn't Epstein himself. While it may be true that the more common search phrase is McAfee didn't kill himself, the phrasing McAfee didn't Epstein himself is also used in some sources, so I would say it is a plausible search term. 05:44, 2 July 2021 (UTC) TOA The owner of all ☑️

What sources? The phrase doesn't even make sense – I did a quick check and couldn't find it mentioned in any sources, or in the target article.
Also, can you please fix your sig so the discussion tools work? Your current signature does not comply with WP:SIGPROB. – bradv🍁 06:09, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I may be missing something, but everything at WP:SIGPROB is something my signature complies with. My user name is The owner of all and it is shown in my signature. My signature also contains the abbreviation TOA so that editors can consistently refer to me that way without having to use the whole name The owner of all. Also the timestamp is not customized. And I'm aware of the policy for signatures, as I have commented in a recent RfC regarding signatures. I have not received any complaints about my signature other than yours. 06:29, 2 July 2021 (UTC) TOA The owner of all ☑️
No, you have customized the timestamp by placing it before the sig. That's a problem, as it breaks the WMF-supplied tools as well as archiving bots, and it hampers communication with others. There is no discernible benefit to this change, either to yourself or to others, and there are considerable downsides. Please fix it. – bradv🍁 06:34, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As for the redirect, it obviously wouldn't be found in a WP:RS, but Wikipedia has redirects for terms found in other types of sources. Such as U$C, or UNC-Raleigh. Similar to how U$C would be used as a satiric reference to USC, McAfee didn't Epstein himself is found such as at redbubble com/i/sticker/McAfee-didn-t-Epstein-himself-by-Borg219467/80995706.EJUG5, 9gag com/gag/arM8zXX, etc [The WP blacklist prevents me from listing the exact links]. As has been explained to me during redirect discussions at RfD, the idea of redirects such as McAfee didn't kill himself or McAfee didn't Epstein himself, is that if someone noticed that reference somewhere (even if on a shirt or in a meme) and they searched for it on Wikipedia, they should be directed to the relevant information.

Restored and nominated for deletion. Thanks for fixing your signature. – bradv🍁 06:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

arbcom vs rfa

I'd argue there's a major difference in what candidates should be expected to prepare for. —valereee (talk) 01:14, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh absolutely. I don't think any RfA candidate should have to endure 55 questions about everything that's wrong with Wikipedia and the world. But there are some similarities, specifically involving the community getting to know and trust the candidate. And for that, the question period is the best opportunity, and how the candidate responds to even the dumbest questions can be an important gauge of how they think and how they'll interact with others in their role. In some cases, no answer at all is really the best reply, so that's fine too. – bradv🍁 01:23, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
As an occasional RfA question-asker, but not yet candidate, I'd like to concur with this. Maybe it's just me, but I like having some idea of who our admins are outside of the strictly narrow sense of "why did you close this AfD" and "under what circumstances will you block a user". Some information on their Wikipedia philosophy makes me more likely to support, regardless of what that philosophy is (unless it's something egregiously terrible ofc). Elli (talk | contribs) 04:03, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I tend to agree, and I think that there should be space for outside the box questions as long as they don't put too much extra stress on the candidate. ( IE: Questions about editing philosophy good, questions about personal political beliefs bad.)Jackattack1597 (talk) 22:45, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Heads up

One of your administrative decisions is up for review at DRV.—S Marshall T/C 12:11, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you're talking about Wikipedia:Deletion review#Vivek Verma. That's a fun one. It's been through AfD several times (1 2 3), and led to this massive SPI. And then there are the deletion logs: Draft:Vivek Verma, Draft:Vivek, Vivek Verma (musician), Vivek Verma, and even the creatively spelled Vìvek Verma. What a timesink. – bradv🍁 14:21, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

Hello Brady. Thanks for your r/d work on the troll attacking Lugnuts. Unfortunately they returned under another IP so more mop up is needed. I haven't filed a WP:RFPP yet but I have added the page to my watchlist and will ask for protection if the nonsense continues. Thanks for your time. MarnetteD|Talk 16:03, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Ponyo kindly zapped the edits and JBW protected the page. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk 16:15, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Great work, team! ;) – bradv🍁 18:36, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Bradv - hope you are well. Thank you for your work with page protections, etc, with the anon. LTA. Much appreciated. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:03, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lugnuts, you're welcome. There's been a noticeable uptick in these kinds of shenanigans lately, at least on my watchlist, but I remain optimistic that DENY is the way to handle them. And that goes beyond just reverting and blocking – don't let them get in your head either. – bradv🍁 18:39, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in my RFA

I very much appreciate your kind comments and encouragement throughout the process. I am stepping into these tasks somewhat gingerly. I hope to be a positive influence and put more of my attention towards consensus building. BusterD (talk) 19:33, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Hi Bradv, since Bishonen is on vacation, I am bothering you. You had recently blocked User:Banglawikit as a sock of User:Bengaliwikipro. User:Arthur1277 has edited Talk:Baidya and related articles; his edits clearly indicate he is not a new user, rather a sock of Banglawikit/Bengaliwikipro. I would like to request you to please check the same. Thanks & Regards. Ekdalian (talk) 15:56, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

why are you mentioning me here?? and why are you calling me a sock?? did I do anything wrong?? Arthur1277 (talk) 16:48, 16 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
