Italexit, whose complete name is Italexit – For Italy with Paragone (Italian: Italexit – Per l'Italia con Paragone),[3][4] is a populist[5] and Eurosceptic[6][7] political party in Italy. Its founder and leader is Gianluigi Paragone, an Italian senator and former TV journalist who drew inspiration for his movement from Nigel Farage's Brexit Party, with the aim of taking Italy out of the European Union.[8][9]

History

Gianluigi Paragone, party's founder and leader

In January 2020, senator Gianluigi Paragone, a former journalist (he was editor of Lega Nord's newspaper La Padania, deputy editor of Libero and host of several talk shows on Rai 2 and La7) known for his populist and Eurosceptic stances, was expelled from the Five Star Movement (M5S) due to his opposition to the government with the Democratic Party (PD).[10]

In the following months, speculations rose around the possibility of a new movement, led by Paragone himself.[11] In July 2020, Paragone launched his new party with the goal to bring Italy out of EU weeks after meeting with Nigel Farage.[12][8] Carlo Martelli and Mario Giarrusso, two senators from the M5S, defected to Italexit in 2021,[13] while senator William De Vecchis (who defected from the League) and deputy Jessica Costanzo (previously expelled from the M5S) joined.[14][15]

Between 2021 and 2022, the party became increasingly critical towards the policies promoted by Mario Draghi's national unity government to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Italexit strongly opposed the EU Digital COVID Certificate, also known as "Green Pass", which became mandatory to work and travel in the country since October 2021.[16] Paragone labeled the vaccination certificate as an "infamous obligation",[17] moreover he stated he was not vaccinated, describing his opposition to the mandatory vaccination as a "war of religion".[18]

In the 2021 Milan municipal election Paragone obtained 2.99% of vote and was the third most voted candidate behind mayor Giuseppe Sala (centre-left coalition) and Luca Bernardo (centre-right coalition), but did not succeed in getting elected to the municipal council (due to the 3% electoral threshold).[19] In the 2021 local elections Italexit's candidates also ran in other municipal elections, winning 0.8% in Turin,[20] 2.0% in Bologna,[21] 0.5% in Ravenna[22] and 1.5% in Grosseto.[23] In the 2022 local elections Italexit obtained 2.6% in Alessandria,[24] 2.0% in Asti,[25] 1.4% in Cuneo,[26] 0.9% in Como[27] 2.4% in Lodi,[28] 1.9% in Monza,[29] 1.0% in Lucca,[30] 1.0% in Pistoia,[31] and 2.1% in Viterbo,[32] while supporting joint lists with other parties in some places.
