WikiCup 2019 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2. With 56 contestants qualifying, each group in Round 2 contains seven contestants, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for Round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • United States L293D, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with ten good articles on submarines for a total of 357 points.
  • Adam Cuerden, a WikiCup veteran, came next with 274 points, mostly from eight featured pictures, restorations of artwork.
  • Denmark MPJ-DK, a wrestling enthusiast, was in third place with 263 points, garnered from a featured list, five good articles, two DYKs and four GARs.
  • United States Usernameunique came next at 243, with a featured article and a good article, both on ancient helmets.
  • Squeamish Ossifrage was in joint fifth place with 224 points, mostly garnered from bringing the 1937 Fox vault fire to featured article status.
  • Ohio Ed! was also on 224, with an amazing number of good article reviews (56 actually).

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews on 143 good articles, one hundred more than the number of good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Well done all!

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! New Zealand National Party

Hi, you recently protected New Zealand National Party, and I have no issue with that—I really didn’t handle the situation the best—but I would appreciate if you could restore the most recent stable version of the infobox. SjShane made edits changing, and then warring over the ideology parameter (June 29, July 1, July 1b, July 3 and July 7), and was reverted by 4 different users (The Wolak, PatricKiwi, IP 122.58.217.36 and myself). Once I realized the situation, it was my goal to restore the stable version (with this edit), and find consensus on the talk before making changes, but obviously I got carried away there, not necessarily following best practices.

No doubt my request shows bias towards my preferred version, but I believe my logic is sound in seeking the pre-dispute stable version. — HTGS (talk) 09:51, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The edit by The Wolak was fair, I had incorrectly stated the wrong ideology which I fixed the moment it was brought up. PatrickKiwi made no further arguments when I referenced a quote from the article, and that it was written by Peter Dunne and added a second source. If you would like to seek to users to jump in on the discussion I am more than pleased to discuss this further with them as well, as I can perhaps hear a justified reason why my edit is not fit for Wikipedia, but as of recent, it’s been between you and me, and I don’t feel it’s justified to talk on behalf of other users not currently engaging in this.
It is also worth mentioning that this started on a different page you sought to revert edits on, an edit made by another user. When I reverted your changes that lacked reason when other parties had the additional info, you swapped to the party page instead. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_political_parties_in_New_Zealand&diff=prev&oldid=1096712131
We have been trying to reach consensus on the talk page, and my personal talk page, but I am yet to receive replies in regards to what the actual issue with the sources are (when the sources you reverted to were outdated and far more debatable on their claims). I have asked for any substantial evidence in regards to party ideology that supports your edit, but your discussion as of recent has been in regards to me and the edit warring, (which admittedly has been on both sides), rather than why you wish to revert the changes.
I see you have now chosen to discuss the page being locked rather than the reason you believe your edits are justified. I would still be happy to listen any counter evidence, but as of present it is still the words of a former politician and party staffer, vs your opinion, and I feel the discussion has run dried but you still wish to change it. But I am still open to dialogue regarding this. But there’s no point in reverting the page back until there’s something else to go on rather than your opinion. Again, read: Wikipedia:No original research.
I also understand their has been a major cultural shift within the National Party, as my sources currently state, which may upset some time supporters. But I don’t feel denying reality is the best course of action on a Wikipedia page.
Have a nice day. - SjShane (talk) 16:01, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@HTGS and SjShane: Thank you both for your notes. As an uninvolved admin, I have no opinion on the how the article should read once the protection expires however would encourage you both to continue discussing the disputed content (preferably in a central location such as the article's talk page so passing editors can weigh in) as to reach a consensus for how the article should read once the protection expires (and to avoid further edit warring). Regarding HTGS's request that I restore a certain version of the article during the protection, I must respectfully decline the request and would refer you to WP:WRONGVERSION which, in a rather tongue in cheek way, articulates why the standard practice in protecting a page for edit-warring is to (barring obvious vandalism or BLP violations) simply protect the page as it is when the admin arrives at it. WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!
