Release Date

The game was originally set to be released on the 13th of April 2023.[5] This was 5 weeks into the 2023 AFL season so there was plenty of time to play the game before the season ended.[6] The game was delayed to the 4th of May 2023 due to the physical copies of the Xbox versions not in Australia before April 13.[7] A couple days before the May 4th launch of AFL 23 it was announced that the Xbox versions of the game got delayed until mid-late June.[8] The PS4, PS5 and Windows versions of the game still released on May 4.[3] On the 16th of June Big Ant Studios announced that the Xbox versions of the game have been delayed again to late July to early August.[9]

Reception

As of June 2023 AFL 23 mixed reviews on Steam.[10] On launch AFL 23 had a lot of bugs. These bugs included benches appearing on the field, coaches being the umpire, the AI not tackling the player, coaches not being in the game and many more.[11] This caused a lot of controversy since the game was A$99.95 on Steam and EB Games.[12][10] The game would also crash a lot when trying to start a game making the player lose their progress in the game.[13] The game was also missing a lot of the features that were meant to be in the game at launch. This includes pro team which was the main focus in the game's trailer.[14] This was followed by a quick patch that fixed some of the bugs at the games launch. For the following couple of weeks Big Ant did daily updates to the game to fix it. As the game got better the reviews also got better.[15]
