Half chōnin, half samurai?

The article says, "Eventually, about half of the population of Edo were chōnin, and the other half samurai." This seems remarkable, as presumably both classes were relatively privileged. Is the statement leaving out some more impoverished people? Can it be refined to include those if so?

It would also be good to indicate what time period the "eventually" refers to. Ezrakilty (talk) 06:33, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
